About us
We do a thing, then we go hang out.
Third Place AVL is for people who'd rather be doing something than sitting across a table making small talk. Every event has an activity at the center of it - a table, a dance floor, a game, a pottery wheel - and then time afterward to actually talk to each other. That order matters. It is much easier to talk to a stranger after you've done something with them.
"Third place" is the name for the spot that isn't home and isn't work. That's what we're building.
WHAT A MONTH LOOKS LIKE
- A capped supper club: one long table, twelve seats, a different neighborhood spot each time
- Beginner dance night, where the entire format is rotating partners
- Team trivia, where you get put on a team instead of having to start a conversation
- A making night - pottery, printmaking, an open studio - because having something in your hands makes the talking easier
- Live music, a late show, a taco crawl, game night
HOW WE RUN IT
- Most events are capped, usually 12 to 20 people. Small enough that you actually talk to everyone, not just the two people nearest you.
- Weeknights start at 6 PM or later, because people work.
- There is always a named person to look for and an exact meeting spot, so nobody stands in a doorway wondering if they're in the right place.
- Every event is sober-optional. The activity is the point; the drink is optional.
- Free or cheap. If something costs money, the price is in the listing before you RSVP.
- No athletic requirement, ever. This is not a hiking group.
Come solo - most of us do. New to Asheville, been here fifteen years, between friend groups, just moved across town: all the same to us. Show up, do the thing, see who you click with. Then come back, because that is the part that turns into actual friendships.
We stay close to town and spread out across it - West Asheville, the River Arts District, North and East Asheville, Woodfin, Biltmore Village.
