Superstition Wilderness Hike – Twilight Adventure

Quick Overview: This hike will finish a little after dark, with sunset around 5:45 PM (Not the completion time). Why after dark? Because I’ve always wanted to experience part of this hike under the stars!

IMPORTANT: Bring a flashlight or headlamp.

This is one of my favorite hikes in the Superstition Wilderness — a route full of canyons, towering bluffs, and wide-open desert scenery that changes constantly.

Time: About 3½ hours (flexible — most likely closer to 3 hours)

Distance: 5½ miles

Elevation Gain: 467 feet

Speed: Average: Not too fast not too slow.

Terrain: Typical of the Superstitions — occasionally rocky and uneven. Good balance and sturdy boots are essential.

Water: Bring at least one quart more than you think you’ll need. I am very serious about this as there have been too many cases of people running out of water and having to borrow others water.

Access and Carpooling: A section of First Water Road is currently damaged by rain and not suitable for low-clearance vehicles. We will meet near the start of First Water Road, then carpool about two miles to the trailhead using high-clearance vehicles.

If you have a high-clearance vehicle, please post how many people you can take.

Directions:
From Highway 88 (Apache Trail), drive about one mile past Lost Dutchman State Park and turn right onto First Water Road. Go roughly 100 yards until you see a small pull-off area on the left — I’ll be standing next to my grey Mazda.

Trail Description: The first half of our route follows an unnamed, narrow trail. The second half includes Hack Spring Trail and Second Water Trail.

This is cross posted with Arizona Amazing Adventures.
