Details

This hike visits four iconic destinations in the Superstition Mountains: Praying Hands, Slot Rock, Canyon of the Waterfalls, and Massacre Falls.

## Hike Overview

THIS IS A DIFFICULT HIKE. Once we begin the ascent, expect about 1,250 feet of elevation gain. The route involves rock scrambling, narrow ledges, and boulder climbing—challenging elements that transform the hike into an adventure, rewarding you with unforgettable viewpoints. The terrain can be steep at times and requires a good level of fitness and confidence with off-trail movement.

I have completed this hike.

## Description:

The path to the top of the Canyon of the Waterfalls winds through rugged mountain terrain, desert flora, cliffs, and striking rock formations. Even when dry (They are dry), the falls area is visually impressive—featuring sculpted canyon walls. The absence of water reveals polished stone and unique natural textures.

## Route:

We start on First Water Road and hike to Praying Hands, then head toward Slot Rock before the more challenging segment to the top of Canyon of the Waterfalls. At the summit is a large bowl-shaped area surrounded by rock walls with wonderful views. Afterward, we’ll descend to the base of the canyon, turn right, and continue to Massacre Falls before returning via First Water Road to our vehicles.

Further details:

Directions

From Highway 88 (Apache Trail), drive about one mile past Lost Dutchman State Park, then turn right onto First Water Road. Go roughly 100 yards until you reach a small pull-off on the left—I’ll be standing near my grey Mazda. Once we meet, we will drive less than a mile to the trailhead.

## What to Bring:

  • At least one quart more water than your usual amount.
  • Extra food and snacks - more than you think you may need.
  • At least one hiking pole is strongly advised.
  • Please wear pants (not shorts) to protect your legs.
