Big Horn Peak is an off trail adventure. There are several adrenaline releasing scrambles that take us to the top.

This has become a New Years tradition and will be my third time up this mountain. I am sure people have done it numerous ways but my path pretty much mirrored the description from HikeAz. On the first ascent in 2024 we found ourselves off the described route and at the bottom of a very steep drainage. A dozen or so Big Horn ewes looked down on us from cliffs high above. When we found the correct way up and landed on the same level as the sheep they ran down the nearly vertical mountainside without hesitation. No wonder it's called "Big Horn Peak" we said :)
The hike starts on the southern side of the canal and goes over a pedestrain bridge, under a fence or two, and past a ghost town before the climb begins.
We will meet at the Loves Travel Stop 8313 W Roosevelt St, Tolleson, AZ 85353 at 630am to carpool. Most of us have probably driven by this mountain dozens of times. Very few have hiked to it's top.
Please bring enough food, water, and protection from the sun required for an all day event with no shade. I am limiting the number of people on this hike to 10 people. This is not a hike where a fast and a slow group should go together. We all need to be within eyesight and earshot of one another for this one. If we haven't hiked together before I will reach out to get an idea of your experience level.
The organizer is not a paid guide, by going on this hike you accept responsibility for yourself and will not hold anyone liable for any personal injury or accident sustanied while hiking. I veiw us as a chain only as strong as our weakest link. We will enter and leave the wilderness together. I will do all I can to offer help to anyone that requires it and hope for the same in return.
