Details

Burn off those holiday calories with a challenging fitness hike to Tom's Thumb! We will make a steep climb to the top at a steady pace, then enjoy a short break before heading back down. The hike is 4.7 miles round trip with 1400 feet of accumulated elevation gain. The hike should take about 2.5 hours.

Where:

  • Tom's Thumb Trailhead (McDowell Sonoran Preserve)
  • There is plenty of parking at the trailhead
  • Directions to trailhead: From Scottsdale Rd or Pima Rd, turn East onto Happy Valley Rd. Proceed about 2 miles past Alma School and turn right (East) onto Ranch Gate. Proceed to the end of Ranch Gate and then turn right (South) onto 128 St and you’ll arrive at the trailhead in less than a mile.

Other Details:

  • Be sure to wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and uneven, rocky ground.
  • The trail is steep and can be a bit slippery on the way down, hiking poles and shoes with good traction are recommended.
  • Bring plenty of water.
  • Friendly dogs on a leash are welcome.
  • Downloading the Alltrails app is highly recommended so you can navigate and turn around if you need to leave early for any reason.
