I am ready to head to Sedona – leaving early to avoid traffic – to hike two summits that are often hiked but rarely summited. You may say to me – but I reached the summit of Bear Mountain in Sedona. There’s a trail to the top. Which means you never reached the summit, so this is an opportunity to actual do that this time. In fact, we are only going for the summit of Bear Mountain South – an official mountain summit, but not even the official Bear Mountain, which is further north and even less accessible.

The trailhead for the two summits is the Doe Mountain Trailhead.

Easy to find. Reached via the back way via 260 and up Highway 89.

I myself tried to hike Doe Mountain, but I didn’t have the coordinates, so we wandered around on top without finding the true summit.

These mountains can be hiked from the same trailhead. The fee for parking is $5.

Doe Mountain is reached by hiking a trail for less than a mile, but when wandering off trail to 34.8902, -111.8609. That is the summit.

Bear Mountain South is across the road on the north side and is reached by hiking a steep trail. Once at the false tourist summit, we hike less than half a mile to 34.9189, -111.8841

I would appreciate volunteers to pre-program your GPS to these exact locations.

It goes without saying these are beautiful hikes in a beautiful area. Getting there early is essential. But it’s worth it!

We can add Scheurman Mountain 4,899’ on our way out of town, which is about 2 miles round trip gaining only 520’.

If doing all three summits, the total distance is less than 9 miles. The gain is about 3,000’.

READ THE FOLLOWING: The Organizer of this trip is a VOLUNTEER, not a "leader". The organizer IS NOT trained in first aid and is not a bonded expert mountain guide. You will need to bring your own experience and judgment. If you want to enjoy the benefits of traveling in a group, then we suggest that you stay with the group on the trip.

The waitlist is created to give preference to hikers who have demonstrated the ability for tougher hikes and consistency of showing up when they RSVP. Those who have RSVPed multiple times and have always cancelled or been a no-show will be kept on the waitlist until others who are more likely to come are given an opportunity to RSVP. The waitlist also ensures we do not overwhelm parking, as this area doesn’t have infinite parking.

Assess the route and conditions as if you were going to do this trip solo.

About your organizer: My name is Dan. I moved to the Phoenix area in early 2017. I have organized over 200 hikes for various groups – including in Arizona, the Sierras, and Northern Nevada. I tend to choose mountain summits I have never done before. I do as much preparation and mapping as I can to ensure we take the correct trails. However, when driving to and hiking in a new area, there are always surprises and unknowns.

This hike is subject to cancellation or rescheduling due to fires or inclement weather.
