Miller and Carr Peaks – 9,466’ and 9,237’ – Sierra Vista - ADVANCED LEVEL
Details
READ THE DESCRIPTION. THIS IS AN ADVANCED LEVEL HIKE
Miller Peak is the highest point in the Coronado Mountains of Southeastern Arizona. The mountains are easily accessible right outside of the town of Sierra Vista, which is a 3-hour drive from Phoenix (depending on where you live).
Trails reach each summit. However, the hike is long and there’s lots of elevation gain. We start at a little over 5,700’ about 5 miles from town. We reach a saddle at over 8,500’ and then hit one summit and then the next. The key will be to get an early start, because it will be warm down lower.
The hiking above 8,000’ is <30% of the hike. The total hike is almost 14 miles. The elevation gain is over 4,900’. However, given it is a trail hike, this makes this a smoother process.
This is for advanced hikers only. The people doing this hike will generally be going a faster pace, that will make this a less than 6 hour hike (not including breaks).
If you fall back on the hike, it is easier to track, because there is one trail up, and Miller Peak is to the left and Carr Peak is to the right.
We will start the hike itself at 5:45am, meeting at the trailhead by 5:30. That allows us ample time to get back to Phoenix by late afternoon.
I am happy to coordinate rides and hotel plans as we get closer.
READ THE FOLLOWING: The Organizer of this trip is a VOLUNTEER, not a "leader". The organizer IS NOT trained in first aid and is not a bonded expert mountain guide. You will need to bring your own experience and judgment. If you want to enjoy the benefits of traveling in a group, then we suggest that you stay with the group on the trip.
The waitlist is created to give preference to hikers who have demonstrated the ability for tougher hikes and consistency of showing up when they RSVP. Those who have RSVPed multiple times and have always cancelled or been a no-show will be kept on the waitlist until others who are more likely to come are given an opportunity to RSVP.
Assess the route and conditions as if you were going to do this trip solo.
About your organizer: My name is Dan. I moved to the Phoenix area in early 2017. I have organized over 200 hikes for various groups – including in Arizona, the Sierras, and Northern Nevada. I tend to choose mountain summits I have never done before. I do as much preparation and mapping as I can to ensure we take the correct trails. However, when driving to and hiking in a new area, there are always surprises and unknowns.
This hike is subject to cancellation or rescheduling due to fires or inclement weather.
