THIS IT! THE HIGHLIGHT OF OUR HIKING SEASON!

A one-day, 22-mile round trip hike to the summit of the highest peak (14,505 ft.) in the "lower 48" states. It's the ultimate day hike and "holy grail" for peak baggers throughout the country. Each year the hike proves to be an amazing, life changing experience for so many of us. This year's hike will undoubtedly be the same.

When you rsvp for this hike, you will first be put on the waitlist. I'll move you to the going list when a spot is available after vetting for your current fitness level. Priority will be given to those who have hiked with me in the past.

Training hikes in our local SoCal mountains will be scheduled prior to the Whitney trip. All members of THRIVE OUTSIDE are welcome to join us on these training hikes.

Mt. Whitney is a VERY STRENUOUS 22-mile round trip hike with 6,700 feet of elevation gain according to All Trails, culminating at 14,505 feet. Nearly 5 miles of this hike will be spent above 13,500 feet and 10 miles of the hike above 12,000 feet, making Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) a very real possibility. Anyone attempting this hike should be an in-shape, experienced hiker with high-altitude experience and a strong mental attitude. Expect to hike a minimum of 12 - 15 hours. Water to filter SHOULD be available on the switchbacks but know your water consumption and plan accordingly.

Here are your accommodations options:

· Camp at Horseshoe Meadows – It’s 45 minutes away from the trailhead but the elevation is 10,000 ft with some hiking trails that you can train on if you get there early. You can get a walk-in camp site on a first come basis. There are also walk-in campsites at the Whitney Portal Campgrounds. Call and check.

· Motels – Also located in Lone Pine. Lone Pine does get hot in the summertime. It’s about a 30-minute drive to the trail head.

--Food, transportation, and lodging are your responsibility.

Conditioning:

Build fitness by walking, running, or hiking on a daily basis.

THRIVE OUTSIDE has several training hikes planned this summer. Do as many as you can. Mt. San Gorgonio is the best test for "Whitney readiness."

--Train for hiking! Do not take this hike lightly. We've had several members attempt this hike only to turn back because of fatigue or the effects of altitude.

BEAR COUNTRY

Remember, this is bear country! Please vacuum and sanitize your vehicles and pack all your food and items like toothpaste, gum etc., including your food in your packs, in one bag/container so they can be placed in the bear locker.

NO HIKER LEFT BEHIND BUDDY SYSTEM - Select another hiker as a buddy and check-in with each other on the trail. Report any problems to the Hike Organizer or Sweep. Do not leave a fellow hiker alone or unaccompanied on the trail.
