This certification covers only the power tools located in the Jewelry and Metalcraft Shop. It is the Second of Three safety certifications for the shop.
METALS 100-101 IS THE PREREQUISITE CLASS

METALS 102: Basic Fabrication Using Jewelry and Metal Craft Power Tools
COST: $30 (members) - $55 (non-members): includes materials
PREREQUISITE: METALS 100-101: Basic Hand Tools
DURATION: 2 hours*
INSTRUCTOR: Crystal Hinds

This certification class prepares TinkerMill members to use selected power tools located at the bench in the Jewelry and Metal Craft shop safely and independently. While the class can be taken by non-members for the fun of it, you can be certified only if you are a member and also have taken the Jewelry and Metalcraft Shop's prerequisite class METALS 100-101: Basic Hand Tools. Non Members are invited to hone their skills at any of the open studios (first and second Saturday of each month 1-3pm, or schedule some time in studio with the instructor)

The tools for which you will be certified include:
• Flexible Rotary Shaft (Flex-shaft): Useful for grinding, sanding and polishing non-ferrous metals, stone and for carving wax models used in lost wax casting
• Disc Sander/Belt Sander: Useful for quickly removing metal and for tool-making
• Buffer machines: Useful for polishing metal
• Drill Press: Useful for precisely drilling small holes e.g. for riveting

The instructor will:
• Review acceptable materials and project examples
• Provide additional self-study resources
• Provide instruction on tools, safety and usage
• Supervise hands-on trials and your completion of the Sampler project required for certification

Note: While this class covers proper tool use and tool safety it should not be considered a comprehensive metalsmithing techniques class. There are other Jewelry and Metal Craft classes intended to teach techniques as well as projects. Watch the MeetUp calendar. Once again, this class is neither related to nor a certification class for any similar tools located elsewhere at TinkerMill. Each shop has their safety requirements.

*Additional time, if needed to complete the project, can be taken at Open Studios on the first and second Saturdays from 1-3pm. Also, bring pieces you have already made. It may shorten the time needed to become certified.
