TinkerMill Presents: Unveiling the Dawn of Galaxies with Dr Wren Suess

About the Presentation:
"Galaxies are vast collections of stars, gas, and dark matter that trace the large-scale structure of our universe. For decades, astronomers have been piecing together the story of how the first galaxies grew and transformed into the massive ellipticals we see today. The James Webb Space Telescope, launched in late 2021, has already revolutionized this field: its deep, sharp view into the infrared lets us directly observe the era of cosmic dawn. In this talk, we’ll journey from the Milky Way to the very first galaxies that lit up the cosmos, making a few scenic stops along the way at some of the strangest and most unexpected discoveries from JWST’s first three years. I’ll conclude with a preview of what the coming years of JWST observations may hold, including the surveys I’m leading at CU."

About our Presenter:
TinkerMill Member, Dr. Wren Suess, spends most of her time at TinkerMill in pottery, stained glass, metals, and showing everyone cute pictures of her cats. When she’s not crafting or hiking, Wren is working at the University of Colorado Boulder as an Assistant Professor of Astrophysics. Wren’s research group uses JWST, Hubble, and large ground-based telescopes like ALMA and Keck to study the formation and evolution of galaxies, especially the mysterious “quenching” process that shuts down star formation.
