The Ziele Creek Trail offers a peaceful retreat within the expansive, rolling grasslands of Garin and Dry Creek Pioneer Regional Parks. Half of the route is a lush counterpoint to the park's sun-exposed hillsides; this natural-surface singletrack descends into a deeply wooded canyon, following the seasonal flows of Ziele Creek. Hikers are treated to an intimate riparian canopy of mature oaks, bay laurels, and mossy rocks, which creates a thriving habitat for native wildlife like banana slugs, lizards, wild turkeys, and rough-skinned newts during the rainy season. As the trail climbs out of the shaded canyon to connect with the Vista Peak Loop, the scenery shifts dramatically, opening up to sweeping, panoramic vistas of the South Bay, Oakland, Berkeley, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Springtime visitors will find the surrounding slopes blanketed in electric green grasses and scattered wildflowers, though hikers should remain mindful of abundant poison oak along the path edges and seasonal mud after heavy rains.
