Data Science meets Mechanism Design - Economics of Blockchain Series

Details

Please join us and Dr. Michael Zargham, CEO of Block Science to talk about AI and Mechanism Design. This session will be an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of AI and social & economic systems. A second, hands-on workshop will follow at a future date for those who want to deep dive into the modeling of these systems.

Social and Economic networks are increasingly entangled with technology platforms. Data science applies computational methods to understand human behavior while mechanism design is used to induce desired behaviors. At the cross section of product management, systems engineering, operations research and economics you will find an emerging discipline blending mechanism design and data science to design, test and govern complex systems from SaaS marketplaces to smart cities. Design is among the hardest and most rewarding tasks a human can undertake; in design there is no "right answer" just understanding of your design goals, detailed technical work to establish the trade-off space, then making judgment calls and proceeding. In a world increasingly intermediated by algorithmic decisions, how does one design an algorithm, or even families of algorithms interacting with human decision making to produce unforeseen dynamics?

Agenda:

  1. Introduction ~ Michael Zargham
  2. Game theory / Mechanism design: an overview
  3. Data Science: a) analyze human behavior b) release algorithms that ‘modify the game'
  4. interlude: shit has really hit the fan; real life example eg filter bubbles on social media
  5. subjective choice of objective measures / acknowledging trade-offs / constraining ‘optimization’
  6. computer aided design helps manage complexity / design AND monitoring&maintenance
  7. Q& A
