The Roman Socrates: Life Lessons from Musonius Rufus

Details

In this session, we'll explore the practical teachings of Musonius Rufus, often called "the Roman Socrates." A prominent Stoic philosopher and teacher of Epictetus, Musonius championed the idea that philosophy should be lived, not just studied. He spoke on concrete topics ranging from resilience and social conventions to diet, education, and even whether men should cut their hair. (For a clue to his views on that, see the picture above...)

To facilitate a lively discussion, we'll read short extracts from his surviving lectures and fragments. A printout will be provided.

This event is completely free.

**Please note the time and venue.** It is a simple meeting room, but there are vending machines in the centre, so you may want to bring some change so that you can get a drink.

There is a waitlist, so if you need to change your reservation, please do so promptly to allow others enough notice to attend.

The group is non-religious and apolitical, focusing on practical philosophy.

No previous knowledge is needed. Newcomers welcome!
