LCC RUNNERS: Thames Path Putney to Chiswick [4-5km] INTERMEDIATE
**Welcome back to LCC's Trail Running Club! For this one, we're making moves in a different direction with a mixed paved and trail run down the Thames Path from Putney to Chiswick.** **We'll be looking at a roughly 45-60 minute run, covering around 5 kilometres or thereabouts on flat surfaces, suitable for confident beginners and experienced runners alike.** Our route will take us from the anti-fascist International Brigades Memorial at the eastern end of Bishops Park, right next to Putney Bridge Tube Station. Details on the memorial and its location can be found here: https://www.londonremembers.com/memorials/hammersmith-and-fulham-international-brigade From there we'll run westward along the Thames Path along paved path and trails, finishing the running portion most likely at Dukes Meadows and cooling off with walking and stretching until we reach Chiswick Bridge, close to Chiswick station. Our standard bit of info about our running group and why it's good is provided below: \-\-\-\-\- Humans evolved to run and sprint; no wonder then that when we do it regularly (within moderation and with plenty of rest days), our brains as well as bodies thank us. Running has recently been shown to [improve neuroplasticity,](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6148340/) heal [brain damage](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6148340/) in affected individuals, and foster [better mental health](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/the-truth-behind-runners-high-and-other-mental-benefits-of-running) including elevated mood at rest and enhanced task-switching ability. Doing all this in nature, as opposed to busy London roads dodging commuters and street cleaners, also helps deliver the well-known [benefits](https://mcpress.mayoclinic.org/mental-health/the-mental-health-benefits-of-nature-spending-time-outdoors-to-refresh-your-mind/) of time spent in nature to mood, anxiety levels, cognition and memory. All these things matter a great deal in an age where burnout and exhaustion are a constant presence either in our own lives or those of the people we care about [who you should totally invite along]. It matters especially for people trying to eke out a percentage of their time and mental capacity for transformative social and political organising: the better we feel, the more we'll be able to do. In a nutshell, running is great for you and you should do it. Trail running is even better. Best of all is doing all this with a supportive group of comrades, especially one which includes knowledgeable folks who can provide some structure to what can be a puzzling sport to get started with if building up to something, like a 10k or half marathon, is your goal. Part of our running group's programming will be building a series of events aimed at building people up, slowly but surely, towards specific goals, using progressive programmes similar to the [NHS's Couch to 5k](https://www.nhs.uk/better-health/get-active/get-running-with-couch-to-5k/) system. \-\-\-\-\- Take care and see you on the trails!

Come and join us for the first day of spring for a bluebells and woodland flower extravaganza - the woodlands will be starting to aliven with spring growth and the surrounding fields will be producing the first buds of their farming produce. We start in Shiplake - an ancient Viking town name for ‘ship lack’ - this was as a far as the Vikings could get their ships to their main encampment in Reading. Famous people frequented these parts - George Orwell lived in Shiplake, the English poet Alfred Tennyson got married in Shiplake Church and Elizabeth I’s treasure is buried near Rotherfield Greys. The real gem will be the spring flowers that will be budding throughout as we walk over fields and into woodland with some splendid views of the River Thames. We will visit a National Trust 16th century house - Greys Court - for afternoon tea as we meander back to Henley for a drink by the River Thames. An interesting £5 GREEN WALK along the route of a long forgotten railway commuter line in North London. STRENGTHEN NEW FRIENDSHIPS IN A PUB SOCIAL AFTER THE WALK. Forgotten Railways, Overgrown Platforms and Phantom Stations are the theme for today's walk. Today we visit a timewarp of days long gone as we retrace the route of one of London's great lost railway journeys of North London **WALK START: Meeting at FINSBURY PARK station (Zone 2 - Victoria Line).** When you arrive at the start look for Ken with the 'KEN'S EVENTS' Meetup Badge. If you are running a few minutes late, don't worry, we usually wait a short time for latecomers. If you are more than 15 mins late you will have to catch us up. Head inside Finsbury Park and up to the cafe on top of the hill. WALK ROUTE: Starting at Finsbury Park Station we will enter the enormous green space of Finsbury Park. Upon leaving Finsbury Park we will commence our walk tracing the route of a railway that once ran to Alexandra Palace via Highgate and is now London's longest Local Nature Reserve which supports a remarkable range of habitats and wildlife. Hedgehogs, foxes, butterflies and a vast array of birds are spotted on a daily basis. We end this walk at Muswell Hill. WALK FINISH and PUB SOCIAL: We end this walk at Muswell Hill. (in the Mossy Well pub) which is a short bus ride or about 15/20 mins walk to East Finchley or Highgate Tube Stations (Northern Line). (Zone 3). Several buses can be caught from outside the pub. WALK DISTANCE: Approx 5.5 miles. Small gradients. RAIN POLICY - If the weather is very wet, we may curtail or postpone the walk, therefore please check this page on the day. Light rain is not usually a problem. Please note that the walk will be continuous with no stops and it is your responsibilty to keep walkers ahead in view and to follow the direction of the walk. **COST of EVENT**: **All of the walks on this group are only £5 each to attend. Payment is not collected before the day of the event to allow you maximum flexibility. Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH (http://www.rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer.php) as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 – 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience. You may try this out with less fuss by following a "Fast track" or go through the normal process. Fast track • Arrange a time to shadow a COUNT volunteer. Call Dave Nohle at 614-268-9558 (cell). • Show up and try it out. • Complete application, etc. later. Normal process • Complete an online application (http://rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer/). • Attend orientation in advance. • At orientation you will complete forms agreeing to keep family/patient info private and allowing a background check and tour the facility. • Complete one training shift. Daily shifts are: morning 9 AM - 1 PM, afternoon 1 - 5 PM and evening 5 - 9 PM. • Schedule shifts online using the on the RMH scheduling system (http://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/?FROM=32895). The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014. Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.

We will then hike Hickory Ridge, Ripple Rock, Overlook and Sugarbush trails to get approximately four miles total distance. We will walk approximately a 18 minute mile pace. Please wear appropriate hiking shoes.
