Do you want to get better at playing with others in open-ended jam situations? Tired of playing things the same way every time? Join us as we open the door to freedom of expression using improvisation. On the 3rd Monday of every month guitarist, teacher and artful improviser Luke Chohany takes students a deep dive into spontaneous music-making. This class is about listening, finding the pocket, managing space, improvising, and playing well together. Students will have an opportunity to play with others on a variety of instruments and learn how those instruments can fit together successfully in a cooperative and supportive setting. Each month Luke will bring new techniques and concepts in improvisation to help students develop their own style and expand their improvisational language. This class is best for players with basic proficiency on their instruments. All instruments and backgrounds are welcome. Ted Garber is a genre-bending multi-instrumentalist whose “BluesAmericanaRock” combines classic showmanship with a captivating singer-songwriter sensibility. His smokey, bluesy vocals, howling harmonica riffs and screaming guitar licks take us on a diverse musical journey from the Big Apple to the Big Easy, hovering in the Mississippi Delta before heading South of the Border. Capoeira (capo-way-ra) is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that is unlike any other martial art. Capoeira incorporates flowing movements with kicks, dodges, and some acrobatics. It is often mistaken for a dance for those reasons. Since it’s origins in the 17th century, it has evolved from a secret fighting practice into an art emphasizing self-expression and community celebration. It is great for the body and mind! In addition to gaining strength and flexibility in class, students learn about Brazilian culture, history, and language (Portuguese). On November 26, 2014 capoeira was granted a special protected status as "intangible cultural heritage” by UNESCO. Hey Poetry Lovers! This group is on a roll. Here’s the gist: We meet at the **Capital One Café in Chinatown** from **12pm - 2pm** every other week. For enrichment, we start by reading and reflecting on a **“published poem”**, suggested by someone in the group. No advance preparation is necessary.
