The Piano Man SOJO (5/16/26)
Lots of Bill Joel songs to add to the mix for his birthday! We're all in the mood for a melody at SOJO!
Seasoned SOJO'ers already know the program, but below are all the details which may be helpful to our new members.
MOST IMPORTANT POINTS:
1. If you have copies of Rise Up Singing and Rise Again, please bring them. If you don't, we may have some extras available for you to borrow (one time only, please). Both books are easy to find and order online. And here's a link to find YouTube Videos of any song in either book. https://www.riseupandsing.org/songs/search
2. Feel free to bring lyrics and chords to hand out for songs not in the books. If you'd like to bring a song that most people don't know well, see if you can find a YouTube link and post it in the comments when you RSVP. We'd like to listen a few times before the SOJO to get the hang of it.
3. Bring something to drink, as singing is likely to make you thirsty.
4. We appreciate (but do not require) contributions to cover our room rental costs of $75 per session.
5. Please do RSVP. It helps us know how to set up the room and allows us to contact you if we have to cancel.
***
FURTHER DETAILS, if you like:
* Our regular gatherings take place on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month. We meet from 2 to 5 p.m. with a break around 3:30. You can come for the whole time or just part of it. If you can arrive a little early to help set up or stay a little late to help put things back in order, that would be great. Occasionally we take pictures of our events. If you would rather not be photographed, just politely let the person with the camera know and step out of view. We'll be respectful of your wishes.
Whether you're new to SOJO or not so new, we look forward to singing and playing with you!
Rewriting Your Relationship with a Holiday, Place, or Event
**Reclaiming the Landmark: Rewriting Your Relationship with a Holiday, Place, or Event**
As summer holidays, gatherings, and activities approach, many of us may find ourselves revisiting memories, emotions, or experiences connected to specific holidays, places, or events. These emotional reactions are not flaws; they can be understood as landmarks that help us better understand where we have been and where we want to go next.
In this session, participants will be guided through individual reflection and small group exploration to examine how certain holidays, events, or places can trigger emotions and shape our sense of self. Together, we will explore how to reframe these triggers as meaningful emotional landmarks and begin redefining our relationships with them in ways that feel more grounded, intentional, and authentic.
This session is an opportunity to pause, reflect, and reconnect with what honors your true and genuine self as you move into the summer season.

Few sights in nature rival the thrill of watching an eagle soar. Hopefully we’ll get several of those thrills today as we visit one of the prime eagle nesting areas on the East Coast.
UPDATE: Due to avian flu, the trail from the Conowingo Dam to Susquehanna State Park is closed. We will make a stop (30 minutes) at the Conowingo Dam Fishermen's Park to observe eagles and other birds and then go to the Deer Creek Picnic Area in Susquehanna State Park to start the hike. We’ll follow the Deer Creek Trail to the Farm Road Trail and then take the Rock Run and Historic trails to the Rock Run Mill. Long hikers add a loop on the Ivy Branch Trail. All hikers return on the Susquehanna Ridge Trail.

House Kirtan Session in Bethesda MD
Come join us for an evening of Kirtan and sacred chanting, led by Niko! Bring your voices your or simply your presence if you want to meditate or relax along with the music :) Feel free to an instrument to play or your own chant to share. Any and all are welcome to join!
Kirtan is, in simple terms, is a chanting meditation. When and repeat a mantra over and over, it vibrates your vocal chords and resonates through your whole body. When everyone in the room is chanting together, that vibration unifies us and allows us to access and connect with the Divine within ourselves and each other. It is one of the main practices of Bhakti Yoga, which is another path of Yoga, which unites our mind, body, and spirit.
This is a private residence. Please park along the street where you can and enter the basement of through the gate by the right side of house.

Share a book, meet a friend
We are going to talk about the books we read—any books, from any genre. Whether it’s fiction or nonfiction, classic literature or something modern, everyone is welcome to share their thoughts, impressions, and favorite passages. It’s a relaxed and friendly conversation where we can discover new ideas and enjoy each other’s perspectives.
Capoeira
Capoeira (capo-way-ra) is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that is unlike any other martial art. Capoeira incorporates flowing movements with kicks, dodges, and some acrobatics. It is often mistaken for a dance for those reasons. Since it’s origins in the 17th century, it has evolved from a secret fighting practice into an art emphasizing self-expression and community celebration. It is great for the body and mind! In addition to gaining strength and flexibility in class, students learn about Brazilian culture, history, and language (Portuguese). On November 26, 2014 capoeira was granted a special protected status as "intangible cultural heritage” by UNESCO.
No need to have a Capoeira background to join this class, just an open mind to try out a new way to move! Beginners welcome.
**Please reserve your spot at www.piesfitnessyoga.com**. The session is offered InStudio only. **Sign up for sessions must be made at least 2 hours prior to class.**
The address is 1322 Prince St. Alexandria, VA 22314.
Our entrance is located on the side of the building, parallel to West St. **Street parking is available and additional parking is located at Shiloh Baptist church, spaces 3,5,7,9.** The church is located across the street from the studio, on the corner of Duke St. and West St.

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for May is "Ink"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
