EXI: Existential Art Show then coffee and cake 🍰
**🎟️This is a free event.**
We will meet at 1pm at the exhibition entrance and wait 10 mins for everyone to arrive.
**Please update your RSVP if you can’t make it.**
✨ I found out about this exhibition totally by accident, have been at the private view which happened on Thursday (as a friend of mine knows one of the artists, his work is amazing), so I’ve set up this meetup as it’s so good I thought it’s worth sharing with everyone.
🎨 This visit takes us into Exi, a powerful, introspective exhibition exploring themes of existentialism and what it means to be human. Through a range of artistic interpretations, the exhibition invites both artists and viewers to reflect on identity, purpose, and the personal journeys that shape our lives.
Blending philosophy with visual expression, the works encourage quiet contemplation and open interpretation, offering a space to question, connect and consider our place in the world through art.
[More info here .](http://cryptgallery.org/event/exi-existential-art-show/)
☕️ We will take about 1 hour to go through the exhibit then we will go for coffee somewhere nearby.
Everyone welcome 😊
Important to note:
1. We typically socialise at cafés after the exhibit, nice, independent ones, not chains and not at pubs. If the event is late on a Saturday we go to a nice bar/pub for drinks after. This meetup is inclusive and everyone is welcome to join.
2. If you get there before everyone and you're not sure what to do or where we are, post a comment on here and I will let you know where we will be.
3. Once we go in we may separate, feel free to explore the exhibit by yourself, we don't have to be together. Some people like chatting to others while exploring and other people prefer to be with their own thoughts. You are welcome to express yourself and do whatever helps you feel free.
4. If you are late or if you’ve booked for an earlier or later time don’t worry just go in and you’ll find us inside. Keep an eye on the comments as I’ll be posting updates.

Woolf Works
Wayne MacGregor's experimental ballet triptych, inspired by the genre-defying works (*Mrs Dalloway*, *Orlando*, *The Waves*) and writings of Virginia Woolf, set to an [original](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMR9yP8cXvE&list=RDnMR9yP8cXvE&start_radio=1) [score](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWKS1ws71eU&list=RDWWKS1ws71eU&start_radio=1) by Max Richter. A synopsis of the work is below, and [a trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdEztPc-wuM) is on Youtube. The principal role of Virginia Woolf is taken by [Marianela Nuñez](https://www.rbo.org.uk/people/marianela-nunez).

**I now, I then** (from *Mrs Dalloway*)
*Mrs Dalloway*, Woolf’s 1925 stream of consciousness novel, is set over the course of one day and alternates between two stories: a society hostess preparing for an important party and a shell-shocked war veteran on his way to a psychiatric assessment. Though they never meet, both Clarissa, the protected insider and Septimus, the social outcast, are haunted by the past. Opening with an excerpt from Woolf’s recorded essay, *On Craftsmanship*, *I now I then* is a journey into the writing of Mrs Dalloway, interweaving narrative fragments from the novel with aspects of Woolf’s autobiography including the experience of drawing on her own mental illness as subject matter.
**Becomings** (from *Orlando*)
‘*on or about December 1910 human nature changed*’ – Virginia Woolf
Written in an epoch of recalibration in every sphere including the roles and rights of women, modes of representation in art and literature, and rapid advances in cosmology, Woolf’s iconoclastic 1928 novel *Orlando* centres around a fantastical figure who journeys through three hundred years without growing old, and changes sex along the way. Relationships prove transient, even with himself, while relativity and plasticity define her experience of time and space. *Becomings* presents *Orlando*’s dizzying wide-angle vision of a vast, ever-altering universe in which life is energy passing through a multiplicity of forms – a brief, gorgeous flaring of insect wings, gestating, emerging, extinguishing and moving on.
**Tuesday** (from *The Waves*)
Grand and elegiac, *The Waves* (1931) is Woolf’s most experimental novel, conceived in response to her own childlessness and the contrasting fierce maternity of her sister Vanessa. In the novel, the voices of six people growing from childhood to old age are punctuated by symbols of natural decay and renewal, the most important of which is the ever-returning sea. Responding to Woolf’s unique fascination with underwater imagery in all her writing, *Tuesday* merges themes of The Waves with a portrayal of the writer’s suicide by drowning. As Woolf counts her steps towards the river Ouse and her final journey, so too the world of her novel moves towards abstraction and silence.
Cinematic Colour Bokeh Bash
Starting at The Flying Horse Pub in Oxford Street we will take a walk around the more colourful and brightly lit parts of London. The task for this walk is to emulate the type of cinematic colour shots inspired by films. I would suggest to use something like Kodak Vision 3 500T or Cinestill 800T. To get some good bokeh you will be best advised to use a lens with a wide aperture. After the walk we'll reconvene to a local pub for some socialising.
I will set up a WhatsApp group to discuss Bokeh and how to go about it with links to other sites. Please add your name to the group early so you see all discussions.

Contra dance with Big Scioty on Feb. 7 - First Congregational Church
**Caller: Dan Kappus**
**Band: Trillium**
**Big Scioty Contra Dance**
**temporarily returning to our long ago location for Jan-March - First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St., Columbus 43215**
WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing!
Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner.
Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot.
For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/)
Please bring your own refillable water bottle. Snacks to share are always welcome!
TBD
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you.
