Bull Creek hike - High and Dry
Located in the shadow of Capital of Texas Highway Loop 360, the [Bull Creek greenbelt](http://www.austintop50.com/2013/06/bull-creek-greenbelt-hike.html) is a favorite hiking destination in northwest Austin. The greenbelt surrounds a segment of Bull Creek known for its scenery, containing natural springs, waterfalls, swimming holes, and towering limestone bluffs.
Today's hike will be **7 miles** at a **Moderately Brisk** pace on a **rugged** trail. The High and Dry route makes a complete loop and avoids creek crossings and drama by utilizing neighborhood streets where needed. *(Some hikers prefer to go straight across the creek. If so, wear shoes that can get wet or bring flip-flops for a quick change. Otherwise wear shoes with good traction.)* Hikers should be able to climb 20 flights of stairs, make their way over a 4-foot tall boulder, and not have an irrational fear of heights. No pets please.
Often we go out for food and drink afterwards.
Participants must sign a Liability Waiver at the trailhead. You may view the waiver document: [https://tinyurl.com/SCSignUpSheet2020](https://tinyurl.com/SCSignUpSheet2020) .
If not already a member, we encourage you to [join the Sierra Club](https://sierraclub.org/texas/austin) (in addition to the Meetup group) and help protect the environment and our democracy.
Lakeline Loop
Let's meet at Lakeline Park where we will walk about 3.0 miles. The trail is paved so street shoes will be fine for the trek. Please note that we will be meeting at The Mobile Kayak rentals (GPS coordinates 30°29′13″ N 97°48′54″ W) for which I will post a picture.
For more information on the park click [here](https://cedarparktxliving.com/lakeline-park/).
In the event of bad weather, I will issue a cancellation notice at least one hour prior to the event.
If you need to contact me, my phone number is 512-922-2006.
Please note meetup has had a massive increase in price and has nearly doubled the fee to organize clubs. If you like the club and want to donate you can pay Kevin by Venmo [here](https://venmo.com/u/Kevin-Coe-9).
Finally, we recommend that you review information on the trail and that you come prepared for the hike (e.g., flashlight, bring at least two liters of water, wear appropriate footwear such as hiking boots, and a brimmed hat.) All attendees are solely responsible for their own health and safety.
By RSVPing for this event, you are agreeing that you are taking sole responsibility for your own health and safety and, if any, your guests' health and safety. If you or your guests are not willing or are unable to take responsibility for your own health and safety, do not RSVP for this event.

Violet Crown Trail Hike: 360 Trailhead to 290 Trailhead
Whoo-hoo! Time for another Hike with Maddy ATX adventure with the crew. 🌿
On our next hike, we’ll be exploring a beautiful stretch of the **Violet Crown Trail**, starting at the Barton Creek 360 Trailhead (the **entrance next to the office building**!) and ending at the 290 Trailhead.
This route offers a peaceful, mostly shaded experience through a forested area, with a more natural Hill Country feel. The trail is generally fairly flat with some gentle elevation changes and sections of rocky, uneven terrain, making it a nice balance between relaxed and active. Along the way, there are a few spur trails that lead to scenic spots along the creek, which we may explore depending on time and group interest.
We’ll be doing a **4-mile out-and-back** at a social, supportive pace and will keep the group together. This is a great option if you’re looking for something approachable and grounding, with just a bit more of a workout than a paved path, but nothing too intense. The trail also follows along the Barton Creek Greenbelt, so expect a classic Austin outdoor experience and to see others out enjoying the trail as well.
[View the All Trails Route Here! ](https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/texas/violet-crown-trail-360-trailhead-to-290-trailhead)

Outdoor Off-Camera Flash (OCF) Portraits

Off-camera flash (OCF) is one of the hottest topics in outdoor portrait photography yet many people struggle to get good results. This workshop will get you well on your way to making beautiful portraits using OCF. Topics include:
* Location scouting with good light and surroundings
* Understanding focal length for portraits
* Light quality and direction
* Equipment considerations
* Blending flash with available light
* How to separate a subject from the background
* Posing and how to make it work outdoors
We will cover this material in-depth then shoot at several spots at the park. You'll have plenty of time to shoot and explore the combinations of light, location and pose. I'll bring a flash that works with Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic and Fuji in TTL as well as HSS. If you're not familiar with those terms, you'll learn all about them in this workshop. You'll definitely want to bring your camera because you will be shooting during this workshop. I will provide the flash - you do not need to bring your own flash. Once you get the hang of using OCF outdoors, you'll see it's not difficult and can make a dramatic difference in your images.
We'll be joined by a professional model so you will be able to practice what you learn.
Your enrollment includes photo release for promotional/portfolio use so you'll not only learn about outdoor photography but you'll also have the opportunity to add to your portfolio.
Plan on wearing comfortable walking shoes for this workshop. At times, we may walk on uneven, rocky surfaces.
Please check your camera's firmware to ensure it is up-to-date. We've had a few people have technical issues at past workshops due to out-of-date firmware. If you would like to attend this workshop and need help updating your firmware send me a private message.

Trails & Ales! Blendon Woods Metro Park / Forbidden Root Restaurant & Brewery
**History**
The history of [Blendon Woods Metro Park](https://www.metroparks.net/parks-and-trails/blendon-woods/) began long before its 1951 opening, rooted in a landscape of rugged ridges and deep ravines that made the land unsuitable for traditional farming. In 1945, a report proposing a metropolitan park system for Franklin County specifically highlighted these cliffs of Bedford Shale as some of the "wildest land in the vicinity". Following this recommendation, the recently formed park district purchased the first 229 acres in early 1949. Because the terrain was so uneven, developers had to cut a mile-and-a-half-long roadway through dense woods just to bring in heavy equipment. This initial preservation effort ensured that the mature second-growth hardwood forests remained largely untouched by the urban expansion spreading toward Westerville.
Opening day arrived on Labor Day, September 3, 1951, marking Blendon Woods as the second park in the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system. The final push to open was a frantic race; the State Highway Department only finished the primary gravel access road four days before the gates opened. Early staff members, consisting of just four full-time employees, had to hand-dig pit toilets and learn construction skills on the fly to build the first picnic shelters. Despite the dusty conditions and limited facilities, the park was an immediate success, drawing massive crowds from across Central Ohio. By the end of the 1950s, annual visitation had already climbed to over 190,000 people.
As the surrounding suburbs grew in the 1960s, the park faced severe overcrowding that threatened its natural habitats. In response, Franklin County voters passed the first Metro Parks levy in 1960, providing the funds necessary for a decade of steady expansion. During this era, the park nearly doubled in size, growing from 264 acres to over 570 acres by 1968. Planners also addressed a critical water shortage by collaborating with the U.S. Soil and Conservation Service to build a lake in 1964. This body of water originally served as a temporary reservoir before its role shifted toward conservation and wildlife support.
The 1970s marked a transition toward the specialized wildlife and educational focus for which the park is known today. In 1971, the Walden Waterfowl Refuge was established around the 11-acre Thoreau Lake, creating a sanctuary that remains restricted to provide a quiet habitat for migratory birds. A formal nature center was also developed during this period, expanding on the guided Sunday walks that had been a park staple since the early 1950s. The park’s famous "Monarch Mansion" also became a prominent fixture, starting a long tradition of raising and releasing thousands of monarch butterflies each September. These initiatives cemented the park’s reputation as a premier destination for birders and nature enthusiasts.
In more recent decades, Blendon Woods has continued to modernize while maintaining its wilderness character. The 10-acre Natural Play Area was added in 2017, encouraging kids to explore the ravines and woods off-trail. This was followed by the opening of a $1.5 million inclusive playground in April 2025, designed to accommodate children of all physical abilities. The nature center also underwent major renovations to include immersive, three-dimensional exhibits and a new butterfly house. Today, the park encompasses 653 acres, preserving a unique geologic and biological corridor amidst the bustling Westerville and Northeast Columbus area.
**Map of the Park**
Here is a map of [Blendon Woods](https://www.metroparks.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/BLN_map_Inclusive-Playground-and-Butterfly-Trail_May-2025_1980px.png).
**Summary**
For this event, we will hike the Lake View, Hickory Ridge, Ripple Rock, Overlook, Brookside, and Sugarbush Trails. This sounds like a lot, but it will really be only a little over five miles. Blendon Woods has a few hills here and there, but it's not one of the more strenuous metro parks.
**Where We'll Meet**
We'll meet just in front of the Nature Center. This is about a mile into the park from the main entrance. You have to go past the Ranger Station and the Shadblow Reservable Area to get to it, so don't stop too early at the Ranger Station and get it confused with the Nature Center.
**After the Hike**
Afterward, we will head over to [Forbidden Root Restaurant & Brewery](https://forbiddenroot.com/restaurants/columbus-ohio/) at Easton for [drinks](https://forbiddenroot.com/restaurants/columbus-ohio/#dinner-menu) and [food](https://forbiddenroot.com/wp-content/uploads/Cbus-Food.pdf). We should be there by 5 if you can't make the hike and just want to join us for drinks.
The brewery's actual address is [4080 Worth Ave, Columbus, OH 43219](https://www.google.com/maps/place/4080+Worth+Ave,+Columbus,+OH+43219/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x88388a86d10b6619:0x4d42b470a5cf11d3?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111); however, I recommend pointing your GPS to the [Worth Garage](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Worth+Garage/@40.0542293,-82.9137962,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x88388b4df6082825:0x17582f0eccd9dda1!8m2!3d40.0542293!4d-82.9137962!16s%2Fg%2F11rzfvvv8b?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDQxNS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) across the street. Parking in this garage is free as long as you're not on the first floor, and it is literally right next to the brewery.
