Neoliberalism: How One Economic Vision Reshaped Society
Neoliberalism: How One Economic Vision Reshaped Society
Neoliberalism took shape in the shadow of Keynesian dominance in the mid-20th century. While governments across the Western world embraced active economic management and expanded welfare states, a small group of economists and philosophers kept a different vision alive. Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman, and the Mont Pelerin Society argued that central planning - even democratic planning - could threaten human freedom by concentrating power and swapping individual choice for bureaucratic judgment. Their critique was both economic and moral: markets weren’t just efficient; they were closely tied to liberty. Friedman pushed back on the Keynesian story, arguing that government failures, not market failures, were often behind economic crises. For decades, these remained minority views - debated more in seminars than in parliament. But in the 1970s, neoliberalism moved from the margins to center stage. Stagflation - high inflation combined with high unemployment - seemed impossible under Keynesian theory, yet there it was, and it made neoliberal ideas suddenly feel relevant (and even exciting) to politicians. Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan didn’t just adopt new policies - they championed a new philosophy. Thatcher’s famous line that “there is no such thing as society, only individual men and women” captured the mood shift. Both pursued privatization, deregulation, union-busting, and tax cuts for the wealthy. The state’s role changed from economic manager to referee of market rules. Within a decade, neoliberal policies became the new norm - and they’ve helped reshape how societies think about everything from welfare systems to work. This session will be led by Luca. Bring wine/beer/drinks/food/snacks/whatever if you want to. **Our events fill up very quickly. Coffee Connections
Coffee Connections
A casual (but coordinated) coffee break to meet new friends, take a Zoom break, and get your AM caffeine fix. Stop by for a few minutes or stay the whole time. Bring a friend or wander in solo. Come for the coffee and company, or just bring a book to read while surrounded by other in-real-life, community-seeking humans. Come by every Friday, or just when you happen to be in town. Make it whatever you need it to be that week. It's not an \*event\* per se, but we hope these Friday meet-ups can become a fixture of the bookshop! Gathering spot will be in the downstairs area of the bookshop (near the Community Library). Coffee and tea are 1.50€ and can be purchased at the cash register upstairs.
Si us plau, arribeu a temps.

The Hour of the Star by Clarice Linspector
The Hour of the Star by Clarice Linspector
Our first reading will be The Hour of the Star (1977), a short novel by Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector. With just 96 pages, it is an intense and powerful book by one of Brazil’s most beloved authors. The novel follows Macabéa, a young woman living on the margins of society in Rio de Janeiro. Through an unusual and sometimes meta narrative voice, Lispector reflects on language, authorship, poverty, invisibility, and what it means to tell someone else’s story. The discussion will be held in English, but you’re welcome to read the book in any language. We’ll meet at Backstory Bookshop (downstairs), and after the discussion we’ll continue the evening with a casual get-together over coffee or drinks nearby, for anyone who feels like staying. **[Please RSVP for the meeting here](https://www.backstorybookshop.com/event-details-registration/reading-women-book-club)!** New readers are welcome!

[ENGLISH] SATURDAY / CAFE de l'Òpera - Philosophy Meetup: 17h - 18:30
[ENGLISH] SATURDAY / CAFE de l'Òpera - Philosophy Meetup: 17h - 18:30
Hi and welcome to our next Socrates Café philosophy meetup! Do you have a hunger for a deeper understanding of yourself and the world around you? Do you value deep, honest and respectful dialogue? If yes, then you will enjoy this event. We ask, answer and discuss questions and ideas to stimulate critical thinking and to widen our perspectives with new concepts and thoughts. The main purpose of these meetups is to enrich ourselves with the perspectives of others, not to convince others about our own perspectives. Our meetups are about our own philosophies of life and not necessarily what the great philosophers and academics have said or written. It is not a debating club or a platform for proselytizing. Instead, we place the emphasis on questioning, open mindedness and challenging our own assumptions while listening to and respecting the views shared by others. A Socrates Café meetup is considered a success when participants leave a discussion with many more questions than they had at the beginning. WHAT TOPICS ARE DISCUSSED AT THE MEETUP? Participants suggest topics at the beginning of each meeting. We then vote and choose that event's most popular topic for discussion. No academic training in philosophy necessary; just enthusiasm for exchanging ideas and points of view. Some examples of subjects chosen on previous meetups: * What ideals are worth dying for? * Why are we never satisfied? * Why is it that human beings know that the society is going wrong, leaders are well informed about it and things continue as is? * Is identity necessary? * How can it be that people in democratic societies are so obsessed with power? (Desire to be different, better, stronger than others) * What is friendship? EVERYONE AND ANYONE IS WELCOME The inspiration for Socrates Cafe originates with the book of the same name, written by the philosopher Christopher Phillips. (Socrates Cafe: A Fresh Taste of Philosophy, 2002). Phillips felt that the Socratic method of dialogue and discussion should be practiced not just in academic settings, but among everyday people interested in examining deep questions together. Hundreds of Socrates Cafe groups now exist around the world. To learn more, visit https://socratescafe.com.
✊ No Tyrants PROTEST March 28 — Global Day of Defiance
✊ No Tyrants PROTEST March 28 — Global Day of Defiance
On Saturday, March 28, Americans in Barcelona — together with concerned locals and citizens from around the world — will once again join millions across the U.S. and around the world in a coordinated day of action to say loud and clear: ### **No Tyrants. The power belongs to the people.** The U.S. Administration continues to escalate its attacks on democratic norms: undermining civil rights and social protections, manipulating voting rules for political gain, threatening free speech, targeting vulnerable communities, and concentrating power at the top. This isn’t just politics. It’s democracy versus dictatorship — **and together, we choose democracy.** ### 📣 Join us in Plaça Sant Jaume at noon for a peaceful, powerful protest featuring: * Inspiring speakers, headlined by **[Reed Brody](https://www.hrw.org/about/people/reed-brody)** — international human rights lawyer and former New York State Assistant Attorney General * Music * Information on how to take action from abroad — including volunteers on hand to help Americans register to vote 🌍 **All nationalities welcome** - bring your friends, family, classmates, and colleagues. ☀️ **Rain or shine - we’ll be there.** Bring your SPF, a hat, or an umbrella just in case. 🪧 **Bring a sign** that expresses your voice - we will also have some extras to share. **⚠️ PLEASE NOTE ⚠️** **As SPAIN is a monarchy and *does* have a king, Democrats Abroad Barcelona will *NOT* be using the "No Kings" language, and we kindly ask that you please *NOT* bring signs with that phrase.** ### **🔊 Turn Up the Volume on Democracy** At our last protests, with 200+ attendees, our ***sound system*** wasn’t strong enough for everyone to hear. **We're raising funds for a better system** so every voice carries across the plaza. Donations will also help us provide **reflective vests** for our safety marshals, print **handouts**, and support ongoing **Get Out the Vote (GOTV)** efforts like **phonebanking** and **voter registration**. We’re all volunteers in DA, but our tools and materials aren't free. **Please consider donating today** to power our protest and organizing work. | [Donate Today](https://www.democratsabroad.org/es_donate) | | ------------ | | *** ### 🙌 Want to volunteer? Great — we need your help! * **Marshals (Safety Team)** ([Role description here](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1FgW0HaiAnkYhIYHZkfuSR_uanQfx0MqsOH-4uRgi1es/edit?usp=sharing)): help with crowd coordination, safety, and de-escalation (need \~20) * **Greeters** ([Role description here](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UgRy83FGsAwRhfA_-9-9juGO5AP6dqoiukg01pKO8_Q/edit?usp=sharing)): outgoing, friendly volunteers needed to welcome attendees, hand out chants, promote DA, and share QR codes * **Outreach & Promotion:** social media, posters, flyers, emails * **Tech Lead:** sound system setup & backup * **Day-of Support:** transport materials to and from the plaza; hold the DA Barcelona banner; set up and take down the info table and stage area * **Photographers & Videographers:** document the protest #### **Can You Help With This?** * We’re looking for a small raised platform or sturdy step so speakers and performers can be seen by the crowd. Please let us know if you have one we can borrow. **Have another idea** — or not sure how you can help but know you want to? Let us know. **Email:** info-es-barcelona@democratsabroad.org *** ### 👕 Get your DA Barcelona or Vote From Abroad T-shirt Wear it to the protest and around the city. Using Philosophy to Cope with Current Events
Using Philosophy to Cope with Current Events
So this month's prompt is more general. I think we can all agree that we are living in "unique" times that require coping skills. I think that one role and/or purpose of philosophy is to help us deal with our daily lives and our "unique" times. So, let's share our feelings and thoughts about which philosopher/philosophy we turn to in order to deal with our crazy events. Who/what helps you stay focused in your daily life and helps you sleep at night. I find that Stoicism with a little philosophical pessimism mixed in goes a long way in helping me deal with what I see as very destructive, fearful and mean spirited public policies at both the state and federal levels. Hope to see you on March 28th!
Let's try a Friday Night Fish Fry!
Let's try a Friday Night Fish Fry!
We thought of one of the interesting things that can be enjoyed at this time of the year. We will be meeting at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for a "Fish Fry" in Marian Hall on Friday, March 27th at 5:00 PM. It might be fun for you to experience what has become a tradition on the Fridays before Easter. They will have fried fish or baked fish, French fries and Cole slaw, as well as beverages, all for $16.00 for adults. They will have other beverages and desserts available for sale, as well. We have never tried this, and sometimes there are quite a few people at these events so we hope that we will be able to find each other easily. I'll try to have signs outside Marian Hall that Identify our group. We hope to have you join us!
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for April is "Water" Speak Easy: true stories, told live. The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast. Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect. The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
Humanist Program
Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event. We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be. Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk. Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. Let's grab some coffee/food and share a morning chat! The East Market has an ample parking lot and outdoor and indoor seating. Grab a cup of coffee from Winston's Coffee & Waffles or on your way to East Market and meet us on the second floor - table behind or east of the elevator. Per what this group is about: "Everyone is welcome! International transplants to Columbus who want to improve language skills, Columbus residents who enjoy talking to people from other countries, and those who would like to discuss international travel and culture, and who enjoy getting together for good conversations."
