Books & Coffee- Philosophy through fiction: Identity
*"Somewhere between the lines, fiction begins to ask who we are."*
I have decided to add these series of ***Philosophy Through Fiction*** to our club to take upon a different topic each time that makes us dig deeper!
For this edition of **Philosophy Through Fiction: Identity**, we’ll gather to explore stories that quietly unravel the self. Novels where identity is shaped, fractured, performed, or forgotten.
This is a themed book club, so there’s **no required reading**.
Any book that walks us through exploring the human identity would fit the subject: through love and solitude, through memory and moral choice, through the tension between who we are and how we’re seen.
Bring along any classic (or favorite passage) that grapples with identity through story, from existential novels to introspective modern classics.
Bring your favorite quotes, reflections, or books to share! (Physical copies are always welcome for our group book photo tradition. ✨)
Expect an evening of thoughtful conversation, quiet revelations, and the pleasure of recognizing pieces of ourselves in fiction. 📖
P.S. I’ll reach out before the event to confirm attendance. Please cancel in advance if plans change so I can adjust the reservation accordingly.

Full Moon Picnic Sun Feb 1st, 5-630 PM, Pont des Arts
**Ahoy there,**
The next full moon picnic will be Sun Feb 1st, from 5 - 6:30 PM. Moonrise will be around 5:40 PM.
I’m in Colorado so you’ll be warmly hosted and toasted by my charming side-kick, Catherine.
This full moon was known as known to American Indians as the Full Snow Moon. It was also known to unsuccessful hunters as the Full Hunger Moon.
**WHAT**: Everyone brings food and drink to share. You will be most warmly received if you bring hot chocolate, spiced wine, coffee, tea, etc.
**WHERE**: Pont des Arts. We'll gather around a bench near the middle of the bridge. Nearest metros: Pont Neuf and Louvre-Rivoli.
**WHEN**: Sun Feb 1st, from 5 - 6:30 pm
**WHY**: Share one of the most memorable sights in Paris with some of the nicest people around.
**WHO**: You and your friends.
**HOW** to find us: Look for a group of laughing “lunatics" speaking English and French around a bench near the middle of the bridge. No telescope this time.
**THEME**: Febrrrruary
**PUZZLER**: There is no puzzler again this month. I was moaning about how much rabbit-hole time it takes me to come up with a puzzler each month - even though I really enjoy learning new things about our cosmos. Someone suggested the obvious solution - just stop posing puzzlers, duh! Which makes a lot of sense cuz I know the vast majority of recipients don’t actually read the email, except perhaps to check the upcoming date (in the subject heading). So since you indeed have read this far, please send a message and tell me whether it’s worth continuing to pose those puzzlers.
**PUZZLER ANSWER**: The answer is in your hands. 🤣
Ciao for niao,
**Captain Bob**

Humanist Community Celebrating Darwin Day
Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program:
Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there!
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

Pop-up Book Club: A Streetcar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams
Let’s meet and discuss whatever comes to mind about one of Tennesse Williams’ most famous plays.
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for February is "Transitions"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
Sunday Brunch
Sleep in on Sundays. When you've had your fill of pajama-time, roll out and have some tasty brunch with your fellow Humanists!
