Anachrony
We will be playing Anachrony with up to 6 players. All experience levels welcome. Expect the game teach to start promptly within the first 10 minutes.
Anachrony is set after a catastrophic explosion has nearly wiped out the human race and made the planet mostly uninhabitable. The game is played over a dynamic timeline as an even more terrible cataclysm is looming on the horizon: an asteroid bearing the mysterious substance called Neutronium is heading towards Earth. Players may power up Time Rifts to reach back to earlier turns to supply their past "self" with resources. At its core Anachrony is a worker placement game requiring the use of your various specialists and sometimes even Exosuits to protect your specialists.

Beltane
Join the Firefly House in our celebration of Beltane!
We'll begin to gather at about 1pm and the ritual will begin closer to 1:30pm after we settle in and hang out for a bit. For what we think might be the first time, at least in recent Firefly House memory, we're going to incorporate taste in our grounding and centering and the closing of our ritual!
We will also have our maypole set up and ready for a dance during our ritual to celebrate the season and the work that our ancestors would have accomplished by this part of the year in more agrarian societies.
After the ritual, join us for a pot luck feast (or at least, a pot luck mid-afternoon snack š
) as we enjoy the out doors and what looks like it might be a very pleasant Saturday afternoon.
We're looking forward to seeing you!

Socrates CafƩ Rockville Meetup
Socrates CafƩ meets on the first Saturday of each month. Though this may be considered a "philosophical" group, there are no rules as to what is discussed. Usually, the topics revolve around social concerns, morality, and the first principles of things.
Prior to each meeting we vote online for the questions we will discuss. That way, we will have enough time to ruminate on them and have more in-depth conversations. If you RSVP to a meeting, you may post your question in the event comments section below. I'll send out a survey for voting a few days prior to the meetup. We discuss two questions each night. So you will get to cast two votes in the survey.
When we meet, we break into smaller groups of five to seven to discuss the top two vote-getters. Each group discusses one question for around 45-50 minutes, and we then take a short break. After reconvening, each group moves on to its second question.
Hope to see you there!

Randy Goldbergās last family constellation workshop before moving to SantaMonica
Family Constellations is a powerful experiential process that allows you to externally map an issue youāre facing, creating a kind of three-dimensional image of the underlying dynamics. What is often felt only internally becomes visible and tangible, revealing hidden patterns that are not accessible through thinking alone.
In this work, we acknowledge what isāwithout judgmentāand begin to restore order where there has been disorder. Unconscious burdens, often carried across generations, can be seen and gently released. As these dynamics shift, the system reorganizes, allowing for a deeper sense of clarity, movement, and belonging.
$65 1-5pm
Randy Goldberg, LMT is a graduate of the DC Hellinger Institute, and of advanced studies in Family Constellation with Heinz Stark of Germany. He is a former Yoga monk, Craniosacral therapist, and a world-renowned astrologer (both Western and Vedic) interviewed by the Washington Post, NPR, and CNN. He has facilitated Family Constellation therapy for individuals and groups for more than 20 years. More information at www.randygoldberg.org ; 202-380-6850 or randygoldberg.org@gmail.com

Ā· Big Game Ā· by Jalmari Helander @Ā DuncanĀ Library
This isnāt just an Oddball Adventure, itās an absolutely berserk, preposterous, what-lunatic-thought-of-this production. When Air Force One is shot down on the way to a meeting of global leaders, the president, played by Samuel L. Jackson, lands in an escape pod in the Finnish wilderness. There he encounters a lone 13-year-old boy hunting deer with bow and arrow. The terrorists who destroyed the plane are approaching, and the boy and president must team up to evade them. The plot is Grand High Lunacy, with stunts that rival anything in the *Die Hard* or *Indiana Jones* franchises, but itās engagingly directed and acted with weird fun surprises and plot twists galore. A good movie? No. A fascinating variation on so-bad-itās-ridiculously-entertaining? Absolutely!

Laughter "Yoga" Outdoors in Nottoway Park Vienna!
Sunday, May 3 is World Laughter Day! Let's get together to "laugh on purpose" or "laugh for no reason."
Laughter brings us the benefits of exercise and even some more ā stress relief and a sense of connection. If you don't "feel like laughing," that's when you can often benefit the most!
Laughter Yoga has no yoga poses and no jokes ā just gentle inspiration to laugh together. It's a super-healthful (research-backed) practice which is also fun, and you can participate according to your own comfort zone! (you are welcome to get a bit zany, or not at all!)
It also includes some deep breathing and gentle movement. Find out more at [www.laughteryoga.org](http://www.laughteryoga.org/) .
I'm a certified Laughter Yoga leader (yes that is a thing!) and I do it both professionally and as a volunteer. (I'll be leading laughter at a marathon warmup the day before!)
Join me from 2 - 3 pm in Nottoway Park to try this practice and feel the benefits! The park is just 1 mile from the Vienna metro station.
I'll bring large blankets so we can sit on the ground if desired (or use a picnic table). All you need is a water bottle.
Please include your cell number so we can be sure to find each other. Hope to see you!
Nature's God: The Heretical Origins of the American Republic, ch 7
This will be our last meeting on *Nature's God: The Heretical Origins of the American Republic*, by Matthew Stewart. For this meeting, please read:
Chapter 7: The Empire of Reason
**Where did the ideas come from that became the cornerstone of American democracy?**
Americaās founders intended to liberate us not just from one king but from the ghostly tyranny of supernatural religion. Drawing deeply on the study of European philosophy, Matthew Stewart brilliantly tracks the ancient, pagan, and continental ideas from which Americaās revolutionaries drew their inspiration. In the writings of Spinoza, Lucretius, and other great philosophers, Stewart recovers the true meanings of āNatureās God,ā āthe pursuit of happiness,ā and the radical political theory with which the American experiment in self-government began.

I recommend using an AI tool like ChatGPT to ask these questions:
* What does Matthew Stewart say about the empire of reason in his book Nature's God?
I hope to see you there!

Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: Eugenics Then and Now
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **"Eugenics Then and Now,ā** on a dangerous movement in science and its lessons for current research, with Carlo Quintanilla, molecular biologist and health science policy analyst at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-eugenics-then-and-now](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-eugenics-then-and-now) .]
Global concerns about the return of eugenic thinking were reignited by Chinese scientist He Jiankuiās 2018 announcement of the first gene-edited babies, Lulu and Nana. He was quickly condemned by the scientific community and jailed for illegal medical practice, but he and others around the world continue experiments with goals echoing eugenic ambitions.
As genetic technologies advance at extraordinary speed, society faces a new set of ethical questions about shaping the traits of future generations. Are we entering a new era of eugenics? If so, how should we respond?
Hear such questions tackled by Carlo Quintanilla, who studied rare genetic mutations in human disease as a graduate research scientist and instructor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and now works at the intersection of genomic medicine, science, and society.
Dr. Quintanilla will begin by discussing the origins and history of eugenics, tracing its development in the 19th and 20th centuries as an idea, a scientific movement, and a set of policies. Heāll examine the rise of Social Darwinism in the United Kingdom, forced sterilization programs in the United States, and the atrocities committed by the Third Reich in the name of āracial hygiene.ā
From there, heāll explore how our ability to shape human health and heredity have been transformed by modern reproductive and genetic technologies such as in vitro fertilization, prenatal and embryo screening, and genome editing. Youāll learn how these tools hold enormous promise when it comes to the prevention and cure of rare and debilitating genetic conditions, yet also raise profound questions related to their potential enablement of a new, technologically driven form of eugenics.
Dr. Quintanilla will then delve into the ongoing debate among scientists, bioethicists, and policymakers over what should be classified as eugenics today. Heāll highlight recent controversial uses of genetic and reproductive technologies that are pushing ethical boundaries faster than society can define them, from embryo selection for traits like IQ and height to speculative military interest in genetically enhanced soldiers. These examples raise urgent questions: Where should society draw ethical boundaries? Who gets to decide? And is the term āeugenicsā still useful for guiding policy and public debate?
Weāll close by examining the social, political, and regulatory forces that will determine the future, considering whether they will restrain the push toward further genetic control or accelerate it. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Casual Boardgames - make friends, then beat them in games
Welcome to Casual Boardgames, where we enjoy classic tabletop games and social deduction games while bonding over good food, drinks, and great conversations.
ā©We started this group to meet new people and make new friends, and bonding over games in a relaxed atmosphere is a great way to do that.
We currently meet near route 23 and Polaris Parkway, and this is close to areas like Powell, Lewis Center, Worthington, and parts of Westerville and Columbus.
ā©Feel free to bring your own games or play one of the many games our members bring. If you are inexperienced, we will help you learn.
ā©Here are just a few examples of the kind of games we play.
ā©Tabletop/board games: Splendor, Catan, Azul, Dominion, 7 Wondersā¦
ā©Social deduction games: Code Names, Chameleon, Werewordsā¦
ā©IMPORTANT:
ā©1. While we love playing a variety of games and competing, we are not just about the games. We interact and talk while playing, and this leads to a lot of laughter and fun. If you just want to compete and focus solely on the game, then this is probably not the group you are looking for.
ā©2. Many people join groups like this and never (or rarely) show up after weeks or months. If you join and never really come, we will eventually remove you from the group as a courtesy to our members. Why? Because limiting group conversations (on the app) to regular members makes communication and planning much easier. Also, while it may be rare, it protects members from people who join because they are interested in following a person instead of having a real interest in our group. If you get removed, it is just because you havenāt come, and we follow this protocol as a courtesy to our regular game players.
