Hands Up Who'd Like a Hug
Hands Up Who'd Like a Hug
Hi all, Sorry im late posting. Completely forgot. Now we have an unwritten nova group rule, we see all Melbourne films. Plus its comedy festival time, so Ive pick Hands Up Who'd like a Hug. NOTE this screening is a special event but there are lots of tickets left. Its in cinema 9 one of the regular/standard cinemas....no tips for this one, but you would want to be towards the back. We'll be in the usual meeting place [read on for details] from 6:45pm 'ish. If there's something else on your film wish list that you want to catch instead (still recommending I swear), then please feel free to do so and catch us in the Nova bar afterwards for a chat. Looking forward to seeing you there. Cheers, Alicia **--=>+ Meeting Spot +<=--** Outside the clothing store Black Orange. It is inside Lygon Court next to Brunettis. Join the group at the meeting spot 10 minutes before the start time or see us in the movie. **--=>+ The Film +<=--** Produced on iPhone13, featuring a brilliant young comic cast, made on the smell of an oily rag, a Melbourne-made, hilarious, heart-warming comedy is coming to Cinema Nova as part of a very special Melbourne Comedy Festival presentation. Thomas, a young oddball millionaire without any friends, sobers up a homeless drunk, Deacon, in an effort to make his very first friend. Meanwhile Thomas’s neighbour, Blake, discovers his girlfriend once had a ‘Three-Day Life-Changing Sex Marathon’ with his best mate, Logan. Although this happened years before Blake and his girlfriend got together, Blake is so intimidated, he decides to end the friendship with Logan – only Logan won’t let him. These four guys become entangled when Blake and Logan start competing to be Thomas’s best mate just to annoy each other. Thomas, oblivious to the real reason for their sudden interest, is ecstatic about new friend prospects but Deacon becomes homicidally possessive. **--=>+ Tickets +<=--** Everyone will need to buy their own ticket online and in advance. If you want to sit with other group members, there's a tendency for us to pick seats in the back two rows. Those who feel comfortable can catch up in Nova's bar afterward. **--=>+ Afterwards+<=--** We meet in Nova's bar after the movie. Look for us in the area to the left as you go down the steps. Share your thoughts about the film with the group over a drink of your choice. If the bar is closed we typically head across the road to the Wolf's Lair which is out the back of Jimmy Watson's.

Monthly Minimalist Meetup (Swap, Declutter & Donate)
Monthly Minimalist Meetup (Swap, Declutter & Donate)
Hello Minimalists! For our April meetup we will be discussing frugality given the increase in the cost of living that we are all facing. To start our discussion a bit earlier, I wanted to mention my favourite way of being frugal, which is not being car-dependant, as car costs are much more significant than many of us think. The annual cost for households with one vehicle is around $9,500 per year! Here I share with you an [article from several years ago before fuel was as expensive as it is now that talk about how car costs eat up the savings from living further out from town](https://theconversation.com/outer-suburbs-housing-cost-advantage-vanishes-when-you-add-in-transport-it-needs-to-be-part-of-the-affordability-debate-204807) . Same as usual, if you have stuff to declutter, bring it around and see if anyone could give it a new home. Anything left over we can donate it at the op-shop after we are done at the cafe. Looking forward to hearing and sharing frugal tips! P.S. We are moving away from Meetup to a email list group so we will be collecting email addresses for a future without Meetup!
Collingwood Puppy Pub Crawl
Collingwood Puppy Pub Crawl
Take your doggos out for an afternoon of fun, socialising, and exploring as we wander down Johnston Street together. We’ll be making our way through some of Collingwood’s dog-friendly spots – from a stylish rooftop bar, to an Art Deco-inspired gem, and finally a warm, nostalgic tavern. Whether you’re discovering the neighbourhood for the first time or rediscovering an old favourite, it’s the perfect way to spend a Sunday with your pup. Total walking distance: just 700 metres. Ticketed event only, please book your tickets early at https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/collingwood-puppy-pub-crawl-tickets-155644194977?aff=oddtdtcreator 1st Stop – Runner Up Rooftop Bar Perched above the iconic Collingwood Yards, Runner Up Rooftop Bar offers 270-degree views across Melbourne’s inner north. With its laidback, open-air vibe, this breezy rooftop is the perfect place to kick off the crawl. Behind the bar, expect sophisticated cocktails crafted with flair, a vibrant mix of red, white and orange wines, plus a thoughtful selection of spirits, each bringing unique depth and character. To make things even better, Chappy chips and dolmades will be served for human attendees – the ideal bite to pair with your first drink as the pups get ready for an afternoon of adventure. 2nd Stop – Night Hawks bar Our next stop takes us to Night Hawks, a chic Art Deco-lite fit-out bar with cool, easy-going vibes. They’ve reserved us a cosy spot in their back courtyard – the perfect place to mingle with fellow dog lovers while your pups relax. For the pooches: Willow’s Pantry grazing platters, featuring artisan dog cakes made without added sugar, using only certified organic, free-range, and natural ingredients. For the humans: enjoy $10 schooners of Nighthawks Draught, $10 Young Henry Cloudy ciders, $10 Louis dry cider cans – an exclusive offer just for our crew. 3rd Stop – Goldy’s! Tavern To wrap up the crawl, we’ll settle in at Goldy’s!, a traditional-style tavern tucked away in the back streets of Collingwood. With its warm and nostalgic atmosphere, this hidden gem has reserved us a spot in their undercover beer garden. For the pups: a doggie meal of the day, served alongside a decadent doggie cocktail. For the humans: hearty pub fare and a relaxed vibe – the perfect way to end the afternoon with your doggo and new friends, rounding off the crawl into a truly pawfect Sunday evening. 📝 Nitty Gritty Please keep all dogs on-lead while visiting Melbourne’s dog-friendly bars and pubs. Please scroll right through to end to see discussion points for lunch AND suggested prior reading link. Interested? Come and join the conversation! ***Cost:*** $35 adult, $30 senior, $30 concession **PLEASE PURCHASE TICKET DIRECTLY ON MUSEUM WEBSITE FOR ROME: EMPIRE, POWER, PEOPLE FOR 12.00PM 19 APRIL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT** [https://museumsvictoria.com.au/melbournemuseum/tickets/](https://museumsvictoria.com.au/melbournemuseum/tickets/) $5 CONTRIBUTION (IF YOU CAN) TOWARDS ONGOING OPERATIONAL COSTS ***About the exhibition:*** From the fall of Julius Caesar to the power and ambition of an Empire, the exhibition showcases the luxury of Imperial Rome, the spectacle of the gladiator arena, the bustling marketplaces and the everyday experiences of Romans. Explore Ancient Rome’s political, social and spiritual worlds through over 180 objects dating from the Imperial period 1st Century CE to the 3rd Century CE, with all of the objects on display in Melbourne for the first time ever. The splendour, drama and humanity of Rome is brought to life in detail with scenography and multimedia, giving visitors an immersive experience and vivid portrait of a civilisation that continues to shape our world today. ***Link with modern humanism and points for discussion over lunch:*** **🏛 Power, Citizenship, and Human Responsibility** Rome’s political system—centralised under the emperor yet still tied to republican ideals—invites reflection on **human agency**, **leadership**, and **ethical governance**. * The emperor’s authority shows how power can stabilise or destabilise societies, prompting questions about **justice**, **accountability**, and **the common good**. * The expansion of citizenship, culminating in the *Constitutio Antoniniana* (212 CE), highlights evolving ideas about **belonging**, **rights**, and **inclusion**. * The Senate, magistrates, and local elites demonstrate how communities negotiate **shared responsibility** and **public service**. Humanist connection: Studying these structures encourages us in the 21st Century to consider what fair leadership looks like, how societies might distribute power, and how individuals contribute to civic life. **🎨 Culture, Creativity, and the Value of Expression** Roman cultural life—its literature, architecture, philosophy, and public entertainment—reveals a civilisation deeply invested in **human creativity** and **shared cultural identity**. * Writers like Seneca, Pliny, and Juvenal explored moral questions, emotions, and the human condition. * Monumental architecture expressed collective values: memory, pride, identity, and aspiration. * Religious and philosophical traditions (Stoicism, mystery cults, local deities) show humans searching for meaning and ethical frameworks. Humanist connection: These cultural expressions affirm the humanist belief that creativity, reflection, and intellectual inquiry enrich both individuals and communities. **🏺 Social Life, Dignity, and the Human Condition** Roman society was hierarchical, unequal, and often harsh—especially for enslaved people, women, and the poor. Yet it also reveals universal human experiences: family, work, belonging, resilience, and aspiration. * The *familia* structure shows how people sought stability, identity, and continuity. * Urban life—baths, markets, forums—demonstrates the importance of **community spaces** where people meet, talk, and coexist. * The presence of slavery and inequality invites ethical reflection on **human dignity**, **freedom**, and **justice**. Humanist connection: By examining both the achievements and injustices of Roman society, we can reflect on the importance of empathy, moral reasoning, and an understanding of how societies can uphold—or violate—human dignity. **🌍 Why This Link Matters for Learning** Connecting Rome to humanist values helps us: * see history as a lens for understanding ethical questions; * recognise the continuity of human concerns across time; * reflect on how societies shape and are shaped by human choices; * develop critical thinking about power, culture, and identity; * understand that studying the past is ultimately about understanding people. It turns the Roman Empire from a distant civilisation into a mirror for thinking about what kind of world we want to build today. ***Suggested prior reading:*** In preparation for the exhibition it is recommended to read about the events of Rome during this time period of 1st Century CE to the 3rd Century CE, and the philosopher Seneca. Bucket list opportunity - Dinner at Vue de Monde
Bucket list opportunity - Dinner at Vue de Monde
Vue de Monde needs little introduction. It has been synonymous with Melbourne dining for over 20 years, continuing to present beautiful food that not only appeals to a sense of luxury but also honesty, integrity and an inherent natural flavour. In 2025, it was again awarded three Hats. I’ve booked for 6 Fine Diners to enjoy the set menu at $380 per person for dinner from 6pm on Saturday 18 April.
Join the waitlist to express interest. Once I have names in the waitlist, I’ll send you a ‘Meetup Message’ to confirm if you have a spot and how to pay. The last minute cancellation fee is the full $380 menu cost, I’m asking for an initial $100 deposit to secure your seat and then I’ll follow up for the $280 balance one week prior to the event. This will be deducted from your bill on the night. Once the deposit is paid, I’ll move you from the waitlist to going. Vue de Monde is a bucket-list venue, so this event will be in demand. Please check that you don’t have your settings blocking messages; if I can’t contact you I’ll have to move on to the next person. Also if you don’t respond to my message within 3 days, I’ll let you know that I’m offering the seat to the next person on the waitlist.
Thanks everyone!
