Join us for an interactive workshop on mastering public speaking, covering essential communication skills, personal development, and professional development. Whether you are a beginner or looking to enhance your existing skills, this event is designed to help you gain confidence, improve your storytelling abilities, and conquer stage fright. Our experienced speakers will share practical tips, techniques, and exercises to help you become a more compelling and engaging speaker. Don't miss this opportunity to overcome your fears and unlock your full potential in public speaking.
Pain is something we all have experience with in some form. Despite common narratives about the mechanisms and functions of pain, it remains surprisingly difficult to understand. Fundamental questions about the nature of pain persist: Is pain simply a physiological response to injury, or does it depend on conscious awareness? Why can some forms of suffering feel invisible, while others command immediate attention? What might pain reveal about what we value, fear, protect, or hold onto?
In our next Curiosity Café, we’ll begin by exploring the nature of pain itself. Together, we’ll consider the difference between nociception and the conscious experience of pain and ask whether pain must be consciously felt to count as pain at all. We’ll reflect on physical pain, emotional pain, dream pain, and the strange ways pain can linger, disappear, or return. Along the way, we’ll ask what these experiences can teach us about the relationship between mind, body, and suffering.
Then we’ll turn to the challenging question: Is pain always bad? While pain is often seen as something to avoid, it can also protect us, shape us, and point us toward what matters most. Can pain ever be useful, meaningful, or even valuable? Would a life without pain be better, or would something essential be lost? Together, we’ll explore questions about heartbreak, resilience, productive discomfort, justice, and our responsibilities to our own pain and the pain of others.
Join our co-moderators Chris Norris and Marybel Menzies for an evening of thoughtful and hopefully not (too) painful conversation about pain.
**Space is limited!** **Please obtain a “Pay-What-You-Can” ticket from Curiosity Café at [this link (click here)](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/curiosity-cafe-pain-tickets-1985338050553) to attend this event. You need a ticket to be admitted.** See the above link for more info about tickets and other options including a limited number of free tickets. Come and hang out with us, grab food, and read through our handout from 6-6:30pm. Our structured discussion will run from 6:30-8:30pm with a 10 minute break in the middle.
Hope to see you there!

Ryan Faulkner explores various papers that address cooperation and safety in multi-agent LLM simulations. Some of the core topics will include:
* Moral behaviour of agents in high-stakes, zero-sum, and morally charged social dilemmas
* Governance and sanctioning dynamics and the ways that LLM agents often fail to cooperate and free-ride in common-pool resource game
* Mechanism design interventions like mediation, contracts, and elected leadership are explored to steer agents toward safer outcomes.
This research also reveals that LLMs adapt their behavior based on awareness of their conversational partner's identity.

**Taming the Lobster: Securing OpenClaw and Navigating the Future of Autonomous AI Agents**
OpenClaw is everywhere right now. It’s arguably one of the most powerful tools for automating tasks locally, but let’s be honest: giving an AI autonomous access to your system is a massive security gamble. Between private data leaks and untrusted content, you’re basically looking at a "lethal trifecta" of risks if you aren't careful.
In this talk, I’m going to skip the fluff and look at real exploits we’ve seen in the wild—from malware hiding in plugin marketplaces to remote code execution flaws that can hijack your gateway.
We’ll then walk through a practical hardening checklist to lock down your setup (think container sandboxing and network isolation) so you can actually sleep at night. To wrap things up, I’ll share a few safer alternatives for those who want the power of an AI agent without the operational headache.
**Speaker: Samiul Islam**
**Senior AI Product Manager & Agentic Systems Specialist**
Samiul is a Senior AI Product Manager based in Mississauga, recognized for architecting GenAI roadmaps and building the underlying orchestration layers that make AI agents reliable. Currently consulting for Thinkrr.ai, he leads the development AI roadmap including their AI copilot, and having voice AI build voice agents.
With a foundation in Electrical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, Samiul specializes in bridging the gap between raw LLM capabilities and deterministic enterprise outputs. During his tenure at Formula.Monks, he led R&D teams to launch agentic frameworks that utilized a semantic tooling layer to ensure AI behavior remained precise and human-like.
A practitioner as much as a strategist, Samiul is an active contributor to the local AI community, frequently optimizing LLMs on Apple Silicon and developing self-hosted MCP solutions. Outside of the professional sphere, he is a dedicated DIYer and health-tech enthusiast, applying his technical mindset to navigate complex personal health data.

**Abstract**
Web Forms gave .NET developers a powerful abstraction for building reusable UI controls long before design systems were a thing. Web Components finally bring that same idea to the browser natively.
This session explores how the Web Forms mindset translates into Custom Elements, Shadow DOM, and HTML templates. We’ll examine how Web Components enable design systems that work across frameworks, how they differ from server‑driven controls, and why they’re becoming a foundational layer for modern UI. Whether you’re maintaining legacy apps or building greenfield projects, you’ll leave with a practical understanding of how to apply familiar patterns in a modern, standards‑based way.
