Python Packaging 101: From Code to Installable Package
Python Packaging 101: From Code to Installable Package
Have you written Python code you’re proud of and wondered how to turn it into a proper, installable package? Join us for a hands-on, in-person workshop on **Python packaging**. In this session, we’ll walk through the modern Python packaging workflow — from structuring your project to building, installing, and publishing your own package. You’ll leave with a better understanding of tools like `pyproject.toml`, build backends, and how packaging fits into real-world development. This is a practical workshop, so come ready to code. We’ll work step by step together ### What we’ll cover * Recommended project structure for Python packages * Understanding `pyproject.toml` * Building your package locally * Installing and testing your package * Publishing a package to Test PyPI Whether you’re contributing to open source, building internal tools at work, or preparing your own library for distribution, understanding packaging is an essential Python skill. *** ### Recommended Experience This is an intermediate level workshop, to get the most out of this tutorial, you should be comfortable: * Writing Python code * Using functions * Working with Python environments (e.g., virtual environments) This is not a beginner Python session, but you don’t need prior experience with packaging. *** **This event is primarily intended to create an empowering and supportive space for women and non-binary individuals to find community, learn new technical concepts, and expand their software development skills. We welcome allies, and we ask that you remain mindful of the event’s focus in creating an inclusive environment where women and non-binary participants can connect and fully express themselves. Thank you for your understanding and support.** *** ### Schedule 5:30–6:00pm – Networking and getting to know each other 6:00–8:00pm – Hands-on Packaging Workshop 8:00:–8:15pm – Wrap-up and Q&A *** ### Requirements (Please complete before the event) * Laptop — this is a hands-on event * GitHub account * Create a free GitHub account if you don’t already have one: [https://github.com/](https://github.com/) * Test PyPI account (we’ll use this to practice publishing packages) * Create a free account on Test PyPI: [https://test.pypi.org/account/register/](https://test.pypi.org/account/register/) *** ### Location This event is at the Prefect offices. We strongly recommend taking the metro, because parking is limited. **Please RSVP at least 48 hours in advance. "The Optimist's Daughter" by Eudora Welty
"The Optimist's Daughter" by Eudora Welty
We've never read Eudora Welty here, so we're going to discuss her best-known work, the Pulitzer Prize-winning "The Optimist's Daughter." This short novel, which began as a story in the New Yorker, is about a woman who travels to New Orleans to take care of her father after surgery. I've been meaning to read Welty for years, so I'm happy we're doing this now.

LM: Off the Beaten Track in SNP (Oventop)
LM: Off the Beaten Track in SNP (Oventop)
Time for something different! This is a repeat of a trip we did in 2019 to explore one of Shenandoah’s many bushwhacks. This one will lead us to Oventop, which should yield great views of the park and the surrounding valley. The credit for this trip goes to Russ Evans, a long-time DC UL member, who was incredibly knowledgeable about these abandoned trails and shared that knowledge. We wanted to do something in tribute to him--so join us for what should be a nice outing. (You can read the original trip report [here](https://dculbackpacking.com/2019/03/11/a-thru-hiker-a-family-and-dc-ul-walk-into-a-shelter-oventop-snp-trip-report/).) The overall distance is short (I think 15 miles in total for the trip), but bushwhacking can be slow and difficult -- you'll want to be comfortable with doing an off-trail route. The plan: gather at Vienna at 8:30 a.m. and head out. We’ll drop off cars at the Buck Hollow trailhead along 211 and then proceed to the Pass Mountain trailhead. We'll make our way along Pass Mountain and depart the main trail to head towards Oventop. We'll aim to keep the group close for this section, as this is our off-trail portion of the trip. We'll enjoy the views and then make our way back to Pass Mountain trail. We'll follow it up to the AT--our home away from home will be the Pass Mountain Hut for Saturday night. Sunday, we'll hop on the AT and take it south up and over Mary's Rock. From there, we'll take Meadow Spring to either the Buck Hollow or the Buck Ridge trails and follow that back to the cars. Weather-wise, anticipate cold conditions—it’s March, so we could see anything from sun to snow up in Shenandoah. I'll update with the forecast closer to the trip. We’ll have GPS tracks for the trip--look for those to be shared closer to the trip. Group size is limited to 10. The Fine Print \- Total round\-trip distance is roughly 140 miles\. Per DC UL recommended guidelines of about $0\.10 per mile\, expect to chip in about $14 to your driver if you're catching a ride\. \- Members and above\, don't forget to pay your annual dues\. You can see if you need to pay dues by seeing if the current year is listed next to your name in your DC UL profile\. Applicants do not need to pay dues for their first trip\. To pay your dues via PayPal\, use this link: https://www\.paypal\.com/paypalme/JenniferAdach/15 \($10 annual dues plus a $5 suggested donation to City Kids Wilderness Project\.\) \- By RSVPing for this trip\, you acknowledge that you’ve read our COVID\-19 guidelines \(https://dculbackpacking\.com/about/covid\-19\-guidelines/\) and that you agree to DC UL's liability waiver terms\. \(https://dculbackpacking\.com/about/liability\-waiver\)

Disaster+Travel+Wilderness First Aid (In-Person) Certification Course
Disaster+Travel+Wilderness First Aid (In-Person) Certification Course
Hands-on learn how to save life & limb, when mired in the wilderness of an urban disaster zone, travel or rural area far from hospital, or natural area miles from an access point, during the critical minutes or hours before ambulance arrival. Come away with actual do-it-yourself care-giving skill and confidence, and 2-year SOLO certification. Counts as WFR Recertification, too. No prerequisites. YOUR SPOT IS NOT RESERVED UNTIL YOU'VE COMPLETELY REGISTERED AT WWW.SOLOWFA.COM \***Spaces are limited. REGISTER: www.solowfa.com or 434.326.4697** Can't make these dates? Check out more course locations and dates on our website. WHO: Open to the general public, adults & teens with solid attention spans. Know your loved ones are safe wherever they are. WHY: Mired in a disaster zone, travel or rural area far from a hospital, or natural area miles from an access point ... accidents, destructive weather, and terrorism happen, and all-too-often members of a group are not capable of dealing with the emergency. This leads to improper care of the patient, and endangers the entire group. Many recreational accidents are preventable, and improper care of trauma can compound even simple injuries. Very few first aid programs actually address the issues of providing emergency care in a setting where 911 is overwhelmed or not immediately reachable. In this course, classroom instruction and Q&A are interwoven with practical work and problem-solving exercises. Hands-on experience - a most powerful learning tool - during scenarios comprise \~50% of class. TIMING: This is a 2-day class, Saturday and Sunday, 8:00am -7pm each day. Fee: $295 (Earlybird)

From Web Forms to Web Components - Burton Smith
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you. The building address is 4450 Bridge Park The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400 **Abstract** Web Forms gave .NET developers a powerful abstraction for building reusable UI controls long before design systems were a thing. Web Components finally bring that same idea to the browser natively. This session explores how the Web Forms mindset translates into Custom Elements, Shadow DOM, and HTML templates. We’ll examine how Web Components enable design systems that work across frameworks, how they differ from server‑driven controls, and why they’re becoming a foundational layer for modern UI. Whether you’re maintaining legacy apps or building greenfield projects, you’ll leave with a practical understanding of how to apply familiar patterns in a modern, standards‑based way. **YouTube Link** TBA
Free In-person Meeting: Unwanted Emotions & Loneliness, How to Get Over Them
Free In-person Meeting: Unwanted Emotions & Loneliness, How to Get Over Them
This is an in-person meeting. Did you know that unwanted emotions like loneliness, sadness, hopelessness, anger, fear, anxiety, or feelings of irritation don’t just fall on you for no reason. They are not random occurrences that simply happen to people's minds. They are definitely not chemical imbalance in your brain due to some nebulous chemical reactions by chance. Your negative emotions are the symptoms of the painful experiences that you have which are not healed, and which are still affecting you. The effects of these painful experiences are exacerbated by the pressures or difficulties of the other problems in your life. For instance, let's say you are already carrying a huge load on your back, then you cannot take on much more, but, let's say something else happens to you, such as the difficulties from the Pandemic, then the resultant combined weight on you can take you over the edge, kind of like the straw that break the camel's back. When this happens, people's attention usually goes to the straw that was added, but actually the majority of the weight had come from the huge load that were already there, holding a person down and causing a person issues. So how do you remove the huge load that was already there? How do you lighten them up? Is it possible to get rid of them? That is what this meeting will be all about. Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life. Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there. This group is created by the Dianetics and Scientology Life Improvement Center of Central Ohio.
