London Bridge Writers' Group - Pub Meet
**The Talbot Room at the George Inn**
The George provides the room free of charge (they are awesome), and we encourage you to purchase drinks (and food – the burgers are great!). As it’s a pub and not a picnic area, please don’t consume your own food and drink there.
We usually meet in the Talbot room which is on the top floor on the left hand side of the pub as viewed from the courtyard. If lost please send a message here shortly before the meeting starts.
**We are sorry to say that there is no step-free access to the Talbot room, and it is at the end of three flights of stairs.**
**Format**
We start at 7pm and run until 9pm. We hear approximately six readings of 10 minutes (\~2000 words), then discuss the piece for 10 minutes. Email your work to: london60transmitter@emailitin.com as an attachment (It must be an attachment). A link for access to googledocs will be given at the start of each session to enable people to read along, which in turn enables more considered feedback. Work submitted will be automatically deleted after 10 days. We decide on readers/pieces at the beginning of each session.
**Safe and respectful space**
The group is run by volunteers, and we don’t have the capacity to read submitted work in advance. If there is anything in your work that might distress or disturb some readers, for example concerning any kind of abuse, please give a trigger warning before you read. Be specific and concise. If it becomes apparent during a reading that a piece is inappropriate, the moderator will stop the reading. In discussing others’ work, please be mindful of how you express yourself and do not use discriminatory language, even if such language features in the piece.

Embankment to St Paul’s: Hidden Streets, History & Surprises
Join us for a fascinating walk from the Thames Embankment to St Paul’s, exploring layers of London’s history—from grand 18th-century design to quirky hidden corners.
We begin in Victoria Embankment Gardens, passing through York Gate—once the private river entrance to York House. This area was transformed in the 19th century with Joseph Bazalgette’s revolutionary sewage system, which reshaped the Thames and created the embankment we see today.
From here, we head into the Adelphi area, originally designed by the Adam brothers in the 18th century. While much was replaced in the 1930s by the Art Deco New Adelphi building, some elegant originals survive—and we’ll even explore a rare underground street revealing traces of old London.
For further info about this area see for example: [Adelphi, London - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adelphi,_London)
Along the way, we’ll spot a working 19th-century sewer gas lamp—powered by methane—and visit the charming Queen’s Chapel of the Savoy, the last remaining part of the once-grand Savoy Palace.
Our route takes us past some of London’s most iconic landmarks, including Savoy Hotel, Somerset House, St Mary-le-Strand, King’s College London, the disused Aldwych tube station, the Royal Courts of Justice, and the historic Twinings Tea Shop and banks.
We’ll also pass historic churches and traditional pubs, including St Dunstan-in-the-West, whose clock was the first in London to feature a minute hand. Nearby, we’ll peek into Hen and Chicken Court—famously linked to the fictional barber Sweeney Todd.
Although we’ll pass the intriguing Temple area, it won’t be part of today’s route. [Inner Temple Lane. Part of the Secret London series by Historic UK](https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryMagazine/DestinationsUK/Inner-Temple-Lane/)
Instead, we’ll explore the lanes off Fleet Street, once the heart of Britain’s publishing world. These hidden passages lead us to Red Lion Court and Dr Johnson’s House and a sculpture of his cat.
We continue to St Bride’s Church, long associated with journalists and said to have inspired the traditional tiered wedding cake.
[St Bride's: The Church That Inspired The Wedding Cake - Living London History](https://livinglondonhistory.com/st-brides-the-church-that-inspired-the-wedding-cake/)
Our walk ends near St Paul’s at Shaw’s Booksellers, a perfect spot to relax after the journey.
[Shaws Booksellers - Fuller's Pub and Restaurant in St. Andrew's Hill](https://www.shawsbooksellers.co.uk/)
**Please Note**
* The walk is undertaken entirely at your own risk.
* We will wait 5 minutes before starting.
* Once the walk has begun, I will be unable to take phone calls and messages.

DESCRIPTION: Rick, a washed-up wedding singer, and Danny, a fading boy band star, bond over music and a late-night jam session. When Danny turns Rick's song into a hit, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves. Power Ballad is written/directed by John Carney, the master of the modern musical and creative mind behind Once, Begin Again and Sing Street! It stars Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu and Jack Reynor.
BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film premiered to rave reviews at this year’s Dublin International Film Festival where critics call it “a sure-fired crowd-pleaser” that “just might be the feel-good hit of the year!” Others say, “Paul Rudd delivers a career-best performance in this charmer” that’s both “hilarious and deeply moving!”

Judgement of Paris - House Wine
This is the 50th Anniversary of the Judgment of Paris. Significantly, in 1976, California wines unexpectedly outperformed French wines in a blind tasting with nine French judges, challenging the perception that only French wines were of the highest quality. This event helped elevate the status of California wines on the global stage and is considered a pivotal moment in wine history.
House Wine, in Worthington, modestly, recreates that moment in history with a tasting both American and French wines in a fun, casual atmosphere. Come at 6:45, pay your fee at the register and join your friends for this "Judgey" tasting. https://www.wineenthusiast.com/culture/wine/the-judgment-of-paris-turns-40/
Arrive when you can and we'll have a table for gathering. Feel free to bring your own food as it is welcomed at this local gem or order from the newly opened Worthington Inn, or local favorites such as Dewey's, Everest, Jet, Worthington Tavern and The Whitney. Each person pays their tasting fee, typically $15, and gets their wine glass, then approximately five pours of the wines being served.
**Parking is tough**. Try the second lot behind House Wine accessed by the land by the back parking lot or the municipal lot one block north of House Wine.
**Waiver and Liability and Attendance Policy.** Participation by you and your guests means you agree to the Waiver of Liability and Attendance Policies on our Group Page. People who have two more or Attendance policy violations are subject to removal from the group.
