Artist Talk (Prof Morris Lum): Evolving Landscapes of Canadian Chinatowns
( This event is SOLD-OUT )
**Join U of T Professor Morris Lum for a dialogue on the shifting architectural and cultural landscapes of *Canadian Chinatowns.***
--We've been interested in this conversation/topic for many years--and attended previous walks/talks/conversations with Professor Lum.
***You need to get your own FREE Eventbrite ticket***\*--link is below. (Limited tickets--so follow all the instructions)\*
https://www.cbc.ca/arts/for-more-than-a-decade-this-artist-has-photographed-north-americas-changing-chinatowns-9.6958912
Drawing from his engagement with the David Lai fonds at U of T Libraries and his new monograph, *Chinatowns: Tong Yan Gaai*, Lum examines the transformation of these vital communities.
The program includes an introduction by archivist June Chow.
https://www.morrislum.ca/projects
Over the past decade, **Morris Lum has embarked on an extensive exploration of the Chinatown communities across Canada and the United States. Focusing on the architecture and evolution of these enclaves,** Lum delves into how “Chinese” identity is shaped and expressed through their structures. Using a large-format camera, he has captured Chinatowns in cities such as Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston, chronicling the rapid transformations these communities face and documenting their shifting architectural and economic landscapes.
His colourful photographs offer a poignant visual record, spotlighting both historical and modern cultural landmarks—small family-owned businesses, iconic Chinese restaurants and vital community organizations—that define these neighbourhoods.

DETROIT: MUSIC OF THE MOTOR CITY Soulpepper Concert- - $85 up
Join us for "TDETROIT: MUSIC OF THE MOTOR CITY", a special, limited engagement concert series evening presented by the **[Soulpepper Theatre Company](http://www.soulpepper.ca/the_company/the_soulpepper_story.aspx)** in Toronto's historic Distillery District.
Our group members will purchase seats online - to enjoy this special evening together.
**The Concert**: **Experience the sound of Detroit's History**
Detroit was once called, ‘The City of the Future.' It was built on the innovation of Henry Ford and later gutted by the collapse of the automotive industry. 20th century Detroit is more than the story of collapse and rebirth, it’s also a story of how those pressures created the music that captured the world's attention: ‘The Sound of Young America.'
After a sold-out run in 2023 Soulpepper regulars Andrew Penner and Travis Knights, along with a group of incredible performers will return to the stage to tell the story of this city and its sound. Through the many genres that came out of Detroit (Motown, Jazz, Hip Hop and Detroit Rock to name a few) they'll dive deep into the city’s heart and history; from the assembly line to abandoned factories to the resilient sounds of today’s Detroit
**About Soulpepper Theatre:** Soulpepper is considered to be one of the best small theatres in Toronto. It consistently offers professional, high-quality productions. It is also one of the priciest small theatres in the city. Please note a seat is not guaranteed for a rush ticket! [More information](http://www.soulpepper.ca/the_company/the_soulpepper_story.aspx).

Contra dance with Big Scioty April 11 - Clinton Heights Lutheran church
**Caller: Kim Thompson**
**Band: Full Moon Country Dance Orchestra**
**Clinton Heights Lutheran Church**
**15 Clinton Heights Ave, Columbus, OH 43202**
WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing!
Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner.
Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot.
For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/)
Please bring your own refillable water bottle.
