ABCD Reads AND Watches "Train Dreams"
ABCD Reads AND Watches "Train Dreams"
[[RESULTS](https://opavote.com/results/4829900303499264) of the poll for this event] ABCD Reads AND Watches "**Train Dreams**", a [novella](https://tpl.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S234C2792355) written by Denis Johnson, and a [film](https://www.justwatch.com/ca/movie/train-dreams) directed by Clint Bentley. **:: ABOUT THE BOOK ::** "Suffused with the history and landscapes of the American West—its otherworldly flora and fauna, its rugged loggers and bridge builders—this extraordinary novella poignantly captures the disappearance of a distinctly American way of life. Train Dreams tells the story of Robert Grainer, a day laborer in the American West at the start of the twentieth century—an ordinary man in extraordinary times. Buffeted by the loss of his family, Grainer struggles to make sense of this strange new world. As his story unfolds, we witness both his shocking personal defeats and the radical changes that transform America in his lifetime." (from [Goodreads](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12991188-train-dreams)) **:: ABOUT THE MOVIE ::** "Train Dreams is the moving portrait of Robert Grainier (Golden Globe-nominee Joel Edgerton), whose life unfolds during an era of unprecedented change in early 20th century America. Orphaned at a young age, Robert grows into adulthood among the towering forests of the Pacific Northwest, where he helps expand the nation's railroad empire alongside men as unforgettable as the landscapes they inhabit. After a tender courtship, he marries Gladys (Academy Award-nominee Felicity Jones) and they build a home together, though his work often takes him far from her and their young daughter. When his life takes an unexpected turn, Robert finds beauty, brutality and newfound meaning for the forests and trees he has felled." (from [Rotten Tomatoes](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/train_dreams)) **:: ABOUT THE EVENT ::** Instead of just reading the book as usual, this time we're asking that you also watch the movie adaptation. During our discussion, we'll explore the strengths of both the book and the movie, evaluate the adaptation's effectiveness, and touch on any other topics that arise. You are welcome to arrive 30 minutes before the event and stay 30 minutes or longer afterward to connect with other attendees outside the book talk. Please ensure you have read the book and watched the movie before attending (though finishing either is not a barrier to participating, as long as you don't mind spoilers). First-time attendees can join for free. If the event is full, we maintain an unofficial waitlist. Please send [Michael](https://www.meetup.com/members/55295192/) a direct message for more information, in either case. We request a $3 contribution from regular attendees to help cover our monthly meetup costs. **:: ABOUT OUR NEXT READ&WATCH ::** At the end of each event, we will ask for nominees for our next Read & Watch (date TBA). If you have a good pairing in mind, please ensure that the book is between 200-400 pages long, available from the Toronto Public Library, and counts as contemporary literary fiction (though these are not hard and fast rules), and that the movie or TV-series is readily available. When enough nominees are collected, Michael will send the members a direct message with a link where you can vote.

Your Performance Plate
Your Performance Plate
Free 1-hour workshop on how your food choices are silently killing your productivity, and what to do about it. ### **You're not unproductive. You're underfueled.** You show up every day ready to perform, but by mid-morning the focus is already slipping. By 2 PM you're running on your third coffee. By 6 PM you're completely done. Most people blame their schedule, their sleep, or their stress levels. But here's what nobody is talking about: the food choices happening throughout your day are directly shaping your energy, your clarity, and your output. And most professionals have no idea it's even happening. ### **Event Agenda** 6:00 PM – Doors Open & Guest Arrival 6:00 – 6:30 PM – Networking Session 6:30 – 7:30 PM – Workshop 7:30 – 7:45 PM – Q&A Session 7:45 – 8:30 PM – Networking & Refreshments ### **What This Workshop Is About** *Your Performance Plate* is a free, one-hour live workshop designed to show you exactly how workplace food habits are quietly costing you hours of productive, high-quality work every single day, and what to do about it. This isn't a diet talk. It's not about eating perfectly or overhauling your life. It's practical, science-backed nutrition knowledge applied specifically to how you work, think, and perform. ### **What You'll Walk Away With** * A clear understanding of why energy crashes, brain fog, and afternoon slumps happen and what's actually driving them * The specific food patterns that are most common in professional settings and exactly how they affect cognitive performance * Simple, realistic shifts you can make to your daily meals that protect your focus and sustain your energy through the full workday * A new way of thinking about food; not as a health topic, but as a performance tool ### **Who This Is For** This workshop is for anyone who works hard and wants their body and brain to keep up with them. Whether you're running a business, leading a team, managing a packed calendar, or simply trying to get through the day without hitting a wall, if energy and focus matter to your work, this session was built for you. ### **About Amisha** Amisha Moorjani is the founder of The Food Quotient, a nutrition and performance practice focused on helping professionals and teams use food as a tool for sustained energy, sharper thinking, and better output. Her approach is practical, research-informed, and built for real life, not ideal conditions. **This event is completely free.** Seats are limited, reserve yours now.

## Rehearsal Details: Thursday evenings 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m, Earl Bales Community Centre 4169 Bathurst St., just south of Sheppard, in Toronto. Email our membership chair, if you are interested in attending a rehearsal. **Lisa Taylor: 647-886-1766, [membershipchair@torontoaccolades.com](mailto:membershipchair@torontoaccolades.com)** Do you love to sing? Do you love performing for live audiences? The Toronto Accolades Chorus brings women-centric singers together to sing and perform a cappella harmony. Harmony connects people from all backgrounds, ages, and musical abilities to create a community where you can not only sing, but find a space to connect with other strong and dedicated people just like you. For decades, we've provided a venue for singers to express themselves, make quality music together, and form bonds beyond measure, and we invite you to join us for the ride. We welcome guests and work with them to find out their voice range and to determine what part (lead, tenor, baritone or bass) they would sing best. Guests are given a music folder and encouraged to participate in singing with the chorus in subsequent weeks. Although we continually strive for musical excellence, prior musical training is not necessary to belong to our chorus. We provide everyone with sheet music, audio learning tracks, education and guidance. At the end of 6 weeks, we ask each prospective member to audition, to ensure that they can hold their part in a four-part harmony song.

She has exposed her legs in a biblical city, an act they deem forbidden, and their judgement will echo on through her adolescence. When our narrator finally admits to her mother that she is queer, her mother's response only intensifies a sense of shame: 'You exist too much,' she tells her daughter. Told in vignettes that flash between the U.S. and the Middle East--from New York to Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine--Zaina Arafat's debut novel traces her protagonist's progress from blushing teen to sought-after DJ and aspiring writer.
