Free ESL Practice and Support
St. Timothy's is excited to offer support to newcomers in Canada. Our goal is to provide conversational language practice through informal instruction and feedback in a welcoming and diverse community.
We invite all new immigrants, English language students, visitors to Canada, parents of children temporarily attending schools in Toronto, foreign university students, and anyone looking to enhance their language skills. We aim to build community where friendships can flourish, in order to help participants establish meaningful connections, learn about life in Toronto, and access practical resources as you settle in to this new city and country.
We begin every Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. with a time to socialize and connect. Our formal program begins at 10:30 a.m., and each week we will have different activities and topics, including practicing English conversation, reading short articles, learning about common pronunciation and grammar mistakes made by ESL speakers, etc. Our volunteers would love to get to know you and offer gentle and constructive feedback to help you improve your English!
We also offer Individual career mentoring, including job search, mock job interviews, and helping you improve your resumes and cover letters.
[In-person] Curiosity Café – Ethics of the Family
Our families, or lack thereof, are one of the first things we become aware of. For better or worse, as children, most of us rely on family to meet our needs and help us learn how to exist in the world. Their presence or absence shapes our behaviours and affects how others treat us. We may be judged by what our parents do for work, how our children behave, whether we have strong or weak family values and ties, or our ability to fulfill familial obligations. ‘Family’ shapes how we come to learn about the world, how we relate to one another and to ourselves, and the goals we set. Through our lived experience, the stories we’re told, and the cultural values many of us have inherited, ‘family’ has become a relational category whose existence we assume is natural; that is, family units have always existed and always will. But could a world without families exist? Statistically, families are the epicentre for cases of violence and abuse, and perpetuating economic inequality. Given this, would we be *better off* in a world without family as we know it?
Join co-moderators Fallon Taylor-Kanary and Sophia Whicher at our next Curiosity Café, where we’ll explore the following questions:
* Who do you consider to be family? Why?
* How do you feel when you think about family?
* What function does family play in our lives?
* Why are families sites of so much violence?
* How is contemporary infrastructure (architecture, policies, institutions, etc) designed around families?
* How would our relations be different if our material and economic conditions weren’t shaped or mediated by the family?
* Would a world without families *necessarily* be a world with less love and care?
**Space is limited!** **Please obtain a “Pay-What-You-Can” ticket from Curiosity Café at [this link (click here)](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/curiosity-cafe-ethics-of-the-family-tickets-1987289282741) to attend this event. You need a ticket to be admitted.** See the above link for more info about tickets and other options including a limited number of free tickets. Come and hang out with us, grab food, and read through our handout from 6-6:30pm. Our structured discussion will run from 6:30-8:30pm with a 10 minute break in the middle.
Hope to see you there!

This event is brought to you by [Being and Becoming](https://beingnbecoming.org/), a Toronto based non-profit. We aim to create community around exploring everyday concepts and experiences so that we may live more intentional, thoughtful, and meaningful lives. We use philosophy as a tool with which we can come to a richer understanding of the world around us.
By offering activities, spaces, and other opportunities for conversation and co-exploration, we hope to enable the meeting and fusion of individuals and their ideas. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background: indeed, we believe the journey is best undertaken alongside explorers from a variety of disciplines, cultures, backgrounds, and experiences.
Find out more about Being and Becoming [here](https://beingnbecoming.org/).
About the Curiosity Café Series:
For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to join us at our Curiosity Cafés and are wondering what they’re all about: every two weeks, we invite members of our community to come out to the Madison Avenue Pub to engage in a collaborative exploration of our chosen topic. Through these events, we aim to build our community of people who like to think deeply about life’s big questions, and provide each other with some philosophical tools to dig deeper into whatever it is we are most curious about.
5-MeO-DMT & your haircut
**Registration only** [here](https://luma.com/xxuglfzm)
**Interview, FAQ+discussion, and a free haircut**
**This isn’t a joke**
**This isn’t an integration circle**
**This hasn’t been written with AI**
**This isn’t a screening of** ***Everything Everywhere All At Once*** **(though that would be cool, too)**
**This is a talk about the similarities of working as a 5-MeO guide and working in a hair salon or barbershop. Seriously.**
**(image taken with my iPhone 8)**
**What do you know about 5-MeO-DMT?**
**The narratives surrounding 5-MeO-DMT are as varied as they are striking: hyperbolic, fascinating, dismissive, and often bewildering.**
**Expect an irreverent, playful, metaphorical ride that ranges from critiques on psychonautic culture to serious nondual talk. There’ll probably be some poetry also. 🗣️And maybe a fundraiser for my book writing venture. 🔌**
**Whether you’re an enlightened human being or just learning about healing, join me as I field questions about the extraordinary and sublime experiences that can occur with this poorly understood substance.**
**Interviewer TBA.**
**Example questions:**
***- DMT and 5-MeO-DMT: What’s the difference?***
***- Is a therapist suggesting “Low 5” for you?***
***- “I had a blackout and don’t remember anything”! WTF?***
***- What’s the difference between ceremonial and therapy contexts? Which one is right for me?***
***- What’s an ‘ego death’, really?***
***- I have my own vape pen. Now what?***
**Who is this guy? (A self-written bio but written in the 3rd-person)**
**From the early-2010’s, 5-MeO-DMT has been the ‘pointer’ towards the One that has become chad’s craft and vocation. Since 2016, his full-time work has been to offer 5 experiences to ~1000 individuals in a variety of ways, in a variety of contexts, and in a variety of locations. He has contributed to the unregulated (read: underground) field’s efforts to establish and safeguard best practices and codes of ethics via facilitator gatherings, media, as well as mentoring and training other guides. He has also contributed to the regulated field’s efforts to better understand this substance, having facilitated two naturalistic (field) research studies with Dr. Malin Uthaug, a leading 5-MeO-DMT researcher, and** [speaking at conferences](https://youtu.be/itFwlDwEavY?si=X_2Ohxdu6aoO_ibT) **. chad has become a well-respected member of the global 5 community of practice to which he has consistently contributed his voice, his perspectives, and his example.**

April's Book: Martyr!
A newly sober, orphaned son of Iranian immigrants, guided by the voices of artists, poets, and kings, embarks on a remarkable search for a family secret that leads him to a terminally ill painter living out her final days in the Brooklyn Museum. Electrifying, funny, and wholly original, *Martyr!* heralds the arrival of an essential new voice in contemporary fiction.
Cyrus Shams is a young man grappling with an inheritance of violence and loss: his mother’s plane was shot down over the skies of the Persian Gulf in a senseless accident; and his father’s life in America was circumscribed by his work killing chickens at a factory farm in the Midwest. Cyrus is a drunk, an addict, and a poet, whose obsession with martyrs leads him to examine the mysteries of his past—toward an uncle who rode through Iranian battlefields dressed as the angel of death to inspire and comfort the dying, and toward his mother, through a painting discovered in a Brooklyn art gallery that suggests she may not have been who or what she seemed.
Kaveh Akbar’s *Martyr!* is a paean to how we spend our lives seeking meaning—in faith, art, ourselves, others.
