29th Belgium NLP Meetup
29th Belgium NLP Meetup
**Now that Claude Code is writing our software, what are you doing with all that free time?** Here's an idea: come spend it with us at the next Belgium NLP Meetup! Our next event will take us back to **BeCentral**, Brussels' prime digital campus, where we're hosted by our friends at Campfire AI. Go ahead and schedule that long Claude job for the evening of **May 5th**. Doors open at 7pm for pizza, talks are planned between 7.30pm and 9pm, and after that there's more time for networking and drinks. The first two talks of the evening are already confirmed. The final presentation will be added in the coming weeks. **Small, specialized, agentic – One Year of Fine-tuning Local Vision LLMs.** *Adriaan Lemmens & Ilia Breitburg (Klassif.AI)* Local LLMs are getting better each year. The smaller the model, the more impressive. While the big labs' closed models still win as generalists, we've been working on fine-tuning our own specialist for enterprise document processing on top of an open-weights base, adapted for use in our custom agent harness and for visual layout reasoning. Recent iterations come within spitting distance of much larger models at a fraction of the size and token usage. In this talk, we share why and how we did it, as well as what it means for how we build efficient agentic systems at Klassif.ai even with hosted models. **Why NLP is More Alive Than Ever in the Age of LLMs.** *Tomas Staelens & Jean-Charles Nadé (Campfire AI)* The hype surrounding Generative AI has led many to believe that traditional NLP is a thing of the past, but the reality on the ground is different. In this talk, Tomas and Charly dive into why "just prompting it" often fails in enterprise environments where cost and ROI are non-negotiable. They will showcase the synergy between NLP and LLMs and argue that the future belongs to a hybrid architecture. Finally, they will share practical patterns for using NLP as a guardrail and optimizer for AI workflows. **Building AI‑native agentic extraction for commercial leases: the grown‑up path** *Frederik Durant (Reavant)* The art of agentic engineering is transforming the software development life cycle at an unprecedented pace. In this new arms race, AI engineers, software architects, and DevOps practitioners are expected to deliver 10x the impact without compromising quality or accountability. In this talk, Frederik will candidly describe his human experience so far navigating this professional identity shift. Additionally, he will show how his company Reavant built an agentic extraction system for complex tenancy documents, and what this taught him about going truly AI‑native.

We do cycles of 4-6 weeks, with a progressive load, and a recovery week at the end of the cycle. Notes: It's NOT required to have an activity tracker or smart watch to be able to follow the session, as I'll be giving signals with a whistle. Intervals training is not advised for total beginners. To have an idea, the average pace at the warm up is around 5'45"/km-6'15"/km so this pace should feel very comfortable ***Acknowledgement of member responsibility and release of liability.*** By signing up for this event, you agree to release the organizers from any responsibility and liability in all claims. How many facilitators does it take to build a collaboration?
How many facilitators does it take to build a collaboration?
Imagine we have a thriving community of facilitators living from their passion; What do we do to get there? Tonight, we invite you to bring your skills together to create such initiatives. You may know the old joke: '*How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb?*' Answer: *'one, but only if the light bulb really wants to change.*' ... Building a collaboration works the same way. In this in Person event, Jord, Pinja and Joost invite fellow facilitators to look beyond networking as polite conversation and explore what it really takes to do something together. The short answer? At least two people — with trust, curiosity, and a shared willingness to experiment. About our facilitators * [Pinja](https://www.linkedin.com/in/pinja-p%C3%B6yt%C3%A4niemi/) is passionate about collaborative decision-making, environmental conflict mediation, and participatory action research. She has designed and facilitated system mapping exercises, share & learn sessions, and engaging educational workshops using theatre and games to spark learning and dialogue. * [Joost Visser](https://www.linkedin.com/in/joostvisser/) is a co-founder of TIAO, a Brussels based practitioners network. Through his management consulting company RELSC, Joost works as a consultant, coach and trainer with leaders that want to bring about positive change in their communities, networks and organisations. Focus areas are resilience, performance improvement, sustainability and innovation. * [Jord Rolland de Rengervé](https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordrengerve/) is a Team Collaboration Coach. As an Agile Coach, Scrum Master, Team Leader, Facilitator or Program Manager, he supports IT teams in finding smoother ways of working remotely and in the office. Collaboration, Engagement and Systemic motivation are completing the Agile toolbox and Project organisation skills to foster team collaboration. Jord is a Sketch noter, Illustrator and Serious gamer.

Come and join **your fellow peers** to have a good time **practicing** **writing code** to get better at writing code in your real jobs. We’ll start off with **koffiekoeken** and form pairs to do the Game of Life Code Kata. After 45 minutes we’ll delete all our code and talk about new insights you’ve gained. Then we’ll pair up with new people and do it all over again but with new constraints applied, like not using conditional expressions, or committing code on green within 2 minutes. At some point we’ll break for lunch and we’ll figure something out for dinner too. ## **What to bring?** This event is very hands-on and it’s always better to come prepared. Bring your laptop (and peripherals if this helps you code better). Make sure you’ve installed GIT, and some programming languages you like. Here are some kickstarting code repositories you can already clone to see if they are usable for you on your machine: [https://github.com/SoftwareSandbox/coderetreat-kotlin](https://github.com/SoftwareSandbox/coderetreat-kotlin) [https://github.com/SoftwareSandbox/coderetreat-java17](https://github.com/SoftwareSandbox/coderetreat-java17) [https://github.com/SoftwareSandbox/coderetreat-elm](https://github.com/SoftwareSandbox/coderetreat-elm) [https://github.com/TimmyGilissen/coderetreat-dotnetcore](https://github.com/TimmyGilissen/coderetreat-dotnetcore) ## **Schedule** 08:30 Welcome with koffiekoeken 09:00 Kick-off, facilitated by Vincent Verhoeven and Tim Schraepen 09:30 First kata 12:30 Lunch break 13:30 More kata’s 17:30 Closing ## **Is this event for me?** If one or more of these apply to you, I’d say you’ll have a good time and learn something new: * You’re a student and want to learn from people that code for a living * You want to improve your coding skills * You want to learn how to improve your AI context/harness engineering via software crafting skills * You’ve never done Test Driven Development before * You’re experienced and want to pair with somebody outside of your team * You’re very experienced and want to help your peers grow their coding skills ## **Practical Info** Our host of the day is Unlockd and along with sponsoring the food and drinks, they’ve lent their office space (desks, monitors, meeting rooms, …) to help you become a better software developer. Unlockd is an agency specialised in building (mobile) apps for any screen. They focus on collaboration with clients who appreciate creating value through small iterations. Debate Night: Piracy
Debate Night: Piracy
For centuries, the figure of the pirate has occupied a strange place in our imagination, both villain and folk hero, outlaw and symbol of freedom. From the swashbuckling adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow to the real-world exploits of Blackbeard, piracy has often been romanticized as a life unshackled from authority, where individuals carve their own destiny beyond the reach of states and laws. Beneath the mythology, however, lies a deeper philosophical question: what does it mean to live freely, and at what cost does that freedom come? Yet piracy is far from a relic of the past. In today’s world, the term stretches far beyond the high seas, reaching into the digital realm, where so-called “internet pirates” challenge the boundaries of ownership, access, and intellectual property. From peer-to-peer file sharing to the rise and fall of platforms like The Pirate Bay, the debate has evolved into a question of whether information should be free or protected. At the same time, accusations of “piracy” still surface in geopolitical conflicts, where the line between enforcement and overreach becomes increasingly blurred. Recent actions involving the seizure of vessels, particularly by powerful states like the United States, have reignited debates about legality, sovereignty, and moral authority on the high seas. When does the defense of order begin to resemble the very lawlessness it seeks to prevent? And who, ultimately, gets to define what piracy really is? This debate will follow a British Parliamentary format with eight debaters split into **four teams of two.** Participants who wish to speak are highly encouraged to bring a paper and pen. You are welcome to participate even if you have no prior debating experience. We aim for debates that are respectful, constructive, and welcoming: * **Respect ideas and people** Listen actively, stay quiet while others speak, and debate arguments, not identities or beliefs. * **Be concise and civil** Keep questions short and relevant; avoid hostility, hate speech, or discrimination. * **Respect boundaries and time** No unwanted advances or suggestive behavior; arrive on time to avoid disrupting the debate. * **Follow moderators** They guide the discussion and ensure fairness.

Before J&P : Harbour
Before J&P : Harbour
***Harbour*** is a worker placement game where players move their worker from building to building, collecting and trading Fish, Livestock, Wood, and Stone; and cashing those resources in to purchase buildings (which are the worker placement spots) from the central pool. Once a building is purchased, it is replaced from the deck, and the central pool is a small subset of the deck, and is therefore different every game.

Building Scalable Customer Identity Resolution Pipelines on AWS Using AI
Building Scalable Customer Identity Resolution Pipelines on AWS Using AI
Customer identity resolution becomes increasingly complex as organizations scale across multiple systems, regions, and data formats. Traditional rule-based approaches often fail to keep up with data variability, require constant manual tuning, and struggle with real-time processing needs. This session presents a practical approach to building a scalable identity resolution pipeline using AWS services and modern AI techniques. The architecture combines data ingestion through Amazon S3 and AWS Glue, transformation pipelines using Spark on EMR, and machine learning models deployed via SageMaker for entity matching and standardization. Graph-based relationship modeling is implemented using Amazon Neptune to improve resolution accuracy by incorporating household and shared attribute context. We will walk through how machine learning models can be used for name and address normalization, how intelligent blocking strategies improve matching efficiency, and how feedback loops can be introduced to continuously improve accuracy. The session also highlights how serverless components such as AWS Lambda can be used for orchestration and real-time processing. **SPEAKER BIO** Mosaic Syed is a Senior Data Engineering and Cloud Solutions Architect with over 20 years of experience designing and delivering scalable, secure, and high-performance data solutions across global enterprise environments. https://www.linkedin.com/in/mosaic-basha-syed-92300856 **CALL FOR SPEAKERS** Learn more: [https://www.awscolumbus.com/get-involved/](https://www.awscolumbus.com/get-involved/) **THANK YOU** *VEEAM* for hosting our meetup!
