Unpacking the History of the Black Radical Tradition
Unpacking the History of the Black Radical Tradition
The Black Radical Tradition is a historical current of organized struggle rooted in socialist, Pan-African, internationalist, and decolonial politics that confronts racial capitalism, internal colonialism, and imperial domination. This session unpacks how that tradition has been systematically whitewashed and commodified, reducing revolutionary movements and figures into harmless symbols while erasing their politics, organizations, and strategies. We will examine concrete examples of organized resistance—from RAM and the Panthers to international solidarities with Haiti, Cuba, and Palestine—to assess how different tactics emerged from real material conditions and what they achieved in practice. The discussion will focus on how today’s movements, including PACA’s work for community control and Pan-African unity, must reclaim this lineage and build durable organization capable of resisting liberal cooptation and sustaining long-term struggles for liberation. If you are in the DMV, please join us in-person at the Black Workers and Wellness Center, 2500 Martín Luther King Jr Ave, SE Washington DC. Register to attend (both for in person and virtual) at: [https://blackradicalhistory.eventbrite.com](https://blackradicalhistory.eventbrite.com) Please wear a mask and don’t come if you’re sick!

His matches often highlight his balanced personality, his ability to lead while also listening, and his calm, grounded presence. Authentic relating: Embodiment Communication\ Energy +Movement
Authentic relating: Embodiment Communication\ Energy +Movement
**Join us for a grounded, body-centered journey into Authentic Relating — where presence, sensation, and self-awareness guide our connections.** Communication extends far beyond speaking and listening. It is a dynamic interplay of verbal and nonverbal expression that shapes how we experience one another. Facial expressions, tone of voice, posture, gestures, and eye contact all influence how messages are received and interpreted. These subtle cues often reveal emotions, attitudes, and intentions — deeply impacting trust, safety, and connection. Embodiment cannot be understood purely on a conceptual level. It is something we experience. Through guided Authentic Relating practices, we will reconnect with our bodies and deepen our awareness of what is happening within us moment to moment. We will practice noticing and expressing our physical sensations and lived experiences in real time — building language for what we feel in our bodies and learning how to communicate it with clarity and authenticity. This immersive experience will include music and movement to support exploration of energy, presence, and connection. Participants will be invited to tune into their senses, engage physically, and allow music to guide expression and relational awareness. **Theme:** Energy + Movement **Recommended Attire:** Comfortable clothing and shoes that allow for ease of movement. Mike is a certified Authentic Relating facilitator through ART International. He has been facilitating Authentic Relating and Nonviolent Communication practices for several years and is passionate about creating meaningful, transformative connections. He looks forward to guiding you through exercises designed to positively impact your relationships and your life.

Film Screening: Alma’s Rainbow (1994)
Film Screening: Alma’s Rainbow (1994)
Join us as we host our next screening of Alma’s Rainbow (1994) by Ayoka Chenzira! This film is 85 minutes and an optional short discussion with the group will follow. **This event will tentatively be hosted at the MLK Library.** Synopsis: A rediscovered treasure of independent cinema, this incisive comedic drama follows Rainbow Gold (Victoria Gabrielle Platt), a teenager coming of age in Brooklyn, as she looks to two vastly different models of womanhood: her straitlaced mother, Alma (Kim Weston-Moran), who runs a hair salon in the parlor of their home and disapproves of her daughter’s newfound interest in boys; and her free-spirited, larger-than-life aunt Ruby (Mizan Kirby), who has just returned from Paris after a ten-year absence and whose presence shakes up the household. Bursting with the bold Day-Glo colors of nineties fashion, this dazzling feature from feminist filmmaker and animator Ayoka Chenzira grapples with questions of Black women’s sexuality, agency, and self-image from a multigenerational perspective. (Criterion) Closest Metro will be Virginia Square (7 min walk)
February Meetup:Yellow Wife
February Meetup:Yellow Wife
This story follows an enslaved woman forced to barter love and freedom while living in the most infamous slave jail in Virginia. Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother's position as the estate's medicine woman and cherished by the Master's sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She'd been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil's Half Acre, a jail in Richmond, Virginia, where the enslaved are broken, tortured, and sold every day. There, Pheby is exposed not just to her Jailer's cruelty but also to his contradictions. To survive, Pheby will have to outwit him, and she soon faces the ultimate sacrifice.

Columbus libraries: [https://cml.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S105C3262835](https://cml.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S105C3262835) Location: [Knotty Pine Brewing](https://www.knottypinebrewing.net/) [Menu, scroll to the bottom](https://www.knottypinebrewing.net/menus-1) Book summary: Adunni is a fourteen-year-old Nigerian girl who knows what she wants: an education. This, her mother has told her, is the only way to get a "louding voice" -- the ability to speak for herself and decide her own future. But instead, Adunni's father sells her to be the third wife of a local man who is eager for her to bear him a son and heir. When Adunni runs away to the city, hoping to make a better life, she finds that the only other option before her is servitude to a wealthy family. As a yielding daughter, a subservient wife, and a powerless slave, Adunni is told, by words and deeds, that she is nothing. But while misfortunes might muffle her voice for a time, they cannot mute it. And when she realizes that she must stand up not only for herself, but for other girls, for the ones who came before her and were lost, and for the next girls, who will inevitably follow, she finds the resolve to speak, however she can--in a whisper, in song, in broken English--until she is heard
