On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, before a cheering crowd of Cuban exile luminaries in Miami’s Freedom Tower, acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the “historic” indictment of 94-year-old former Cuban president Raúl Castro on charges of ordering the murders of four American nationals 30 years ago. The charges relate to a 1996 incident in which Castro, then Cuba defense minister, allegedly ordered Cuban MiGs to shoot down unarmed civilian aircraft operated by the Miami-based “humanitarian” organization, Brothers to the Rescue, in the Straits of Florida. A mountain of historical and political context is needed to properly understand the charges against Castro. The incident has ties to the case of the Cuban Five, whose trial in 2000 proceedings forced José Basulto, the founder of Brothers to the Rescue, to admit that Brothers had been test-firing potential weapons that could have been used against Cuba. The film, by the late IPS Fellow and filmmaker **Saul Landau**, tells the story of the case of The Cuban Five, intelligence agents sent to penetrate Cuban exile terrorist groups in Miami and who almost served long prison sentences until a negotiated release in 2014. The film highlights decades of assassinations and sabotage at first backed by Washington, then ignored by the very government that launched a "war against terrorism." Landau landed interviews with the leading anti-Castro terrorists, who recounted their deeds often with the blessing of the CIA as well as interviews with Cuban state security officials explaining why they sent the five agents to infiltrate the violent Miami exile groups.

Join us for a relaxed neighborhood exploration ride through Rockville's historic Rose Hill community and beyond. We'll start in King Farm and follow a scenic 9.2-mile route that winds through quiet residential streets, local parks, and neighborhood connections. We will explore the Rose Hill Farm neighborhood with its quiet streets, shared-use paths, and historic Rose Hill Mansion, which was built by Dr. Ernest Bullard, the founder of the Chestnut Lodge Sanatorium. Our main destination is the nearby Chestnut Lodge Park, where we'll take a short break, enjoy a photo opportunity, and [learn a bit about this unique Rockville landmark](https://peerlessrockville.org/historic-rockville/peerless-places-2/chestnut-lodge/) before heading back. On the return trip, we'll use an alternate route from College Parkway to West Gude Drive, giving riders a chance to experience another neighborhood connection and discuss potential route options. This is a social, no-drop ride, and we will keep the group together throughout the route, regrouping as needed so that no one is left behind. The Mount Rogers/Grayson Highlands loop hike is an iconic section of the Appalachian Trail, located in the southwestern hills of Virginia within the Jefferson National Forest. This region is best known for its vast mountain views and alpine peaks with **wild ponies** roaming about. This area is also home to Virginia's highest point, Mount Rogers, sitting at 5,729'. This parking lot is **NOT** the paid lot near Masie Gap, and so can fill up. I'd like to try to get there as early as possible. The drive is about 5 hours. I will drive and am happy to have others carpool with me - but please note, I will have my small black labrador in the back seat. **Day 1** After we park, we will hike about 7 miles to our campsite, diverting once to summit Mt Rogers. There arent any views here, but it's worth the .3 miles to say you've been to the highest point in VA! We will camp on the first night at the scenic tent sites near the Thomas Knob Shelter on the AT. There is water at this site and we may see wild ponies if we're lucky. **Day 2** The second day is about 10.7 miles, which includes spectacular views, unique rock formations and wide open grassy meadows. We will camp near the Old Orchard Shelter. There is a spring with water at this site as well. **Day 3** The third day will be a short 3.5 mile hike from camp back to the cars. Getting to the cars early will mean that we should get back to DC around 4-5pm. **NOW ONLINE** The weekly Sunday morning (10:30 am to 12 noon) class begins with a welcome, short reflection on an aspect of the teachings, and includes an arriving meditation (15 minutes) that will often incorporate poems and may end with a reflection or question. The opening meditation is followed by an invitation to each person to share their name and a few words (for example, what is alive for them right now or what their intention is for the class or the day). The sharing has been a powerful support to help welcome new people, get to know each other, and build community/sangha. Following a brief period of mindful stretching/movement, we finish with a longer meditation (25-30 minutes) and final reflections on the teachings, sharing, Q&A, and announcements. Class participants are welcome to stay and engage with other members of the community or adjourn to a neighboring restaurant or coffee shop.
