***FAQ: Why does it cost money if I bring my own project?***
Because we rent a beautiful, central space for every event. Ever thought your monthly apartment rent was too high? Well, multiply that – that’s what commercial spaces in big cities like Berlin cost *per hour*.
Of course, if all you want is just some quiet time, your home or a library is perfect. But if you’d like to focus & connect with others in an inspiring space – with drinks, snacks included – that’s what your ticket helps to cover.

The Gift of Folding @ Das Gift 🎁
An origami tradition has by now taken root at **[Das Gift](https://www.instagram.com/dasgiftberlin/)**, a cosy Scottish pub (special info for all post-rock fans: Mogwai was its previous owner! 😱) in central Neukölln. Known for its creative spirit and friendly vibe, it’s the perfect backdrop for an evening full of origami, good company, and pretending we are far more coordinated than we actually are 🍺
What you can expect at all our events:
* **Mandatory donation (amount of your choice)** – this supports essential costs like the Meetup subscription and keeps our community thriving 🌱 You can either submit a **physical donation** to the event host in person or make a **digital donation** **[here](https://paypal.me/origamiberlin?locale.x=de_DE&country.x=DE)** (and inform the host afterwards).
* In-person folding practice for all levels – beginners and experienced folders are equally welcome.
* Origami paper + model instructions will be provided (from the host’s collection, for reference only). Feel free to bring your own favorite sheets or tools!
* Photos may be taken for memories & our archive (Meetup, Instagram, Telegram) – let the host know if you prefer not to appear.
* **We kindly encourage everyone to order at least one drink/snack to support [Das Gift](https://www.instagram.com/dasgiftberlin/) for hosting us!** They are also kind enough to allow outside food, so feel free to bring something to snack on or share with the group if you wish!
⚠️ **RSVP Policy – Please Read** ⚠️
Our community has grown a lot since its birth in August 2024, which is amazing — but it also means we need to handle RSVPs more carefully:
* RSVP opens **7 days before** each event (apart from short-notice events) and closes at **noon on the event day**.
* Please cancel your spot or contact the host directly (via Meetup message function or our [Telegram channel](https://t.me/+T4URs80l2ig3NWNi)) by **noon on the event day** if you can't make it last minute.
* Members with **2 no-shows** (without notice) will be removed from the group unless a valid reason is provided.
Thank you for keeping things fun and reliable together as a community! 🙏

Mask-making Workshop
**Welcome to a new Mask-making Workshop! (New venue, in Kreuzberg)**
We are excited to invite you to a new, two-day hands-on mask-making workshop inspired by folk devils, spirits, and popular mythological figures from Latin America and Central America.
This workshop combines cultural references, imagination, and craft, inviting participants to create their own expressive folk mask using recycled materials.
No previous experience is required.
In this context, devils are not symbols of evil. They represent creative **chaos, irony, protection, transformation, and vital force.** These figures often blur the line between human, animal, and spirit, appearing as guardians of the land, playful tricksters, or exaggerated reflections of social power and fear.
**Day 1: Symbols, Archetypes & Design**
We begin with a short cultural introduction about what the “devil” represents in Latin American folk traditions. We will explore visual examples from traditional masks and popular celebrations: folk spirits, tricksters, and hybrid animal–human figures.
We will then choose a personal archetype to work with. Using a template as a base, and through quick sketches, we will design and define:
• Expression: rage, irony, mystery, laughter.
• Horns, nose, fangs, beard, beaks, ears, snouts
• Human, animal, or hybrid forms
By the end of Day 1, each participant will have a clear mask concept and begin **building the base structure with recycled cardboard and paper-maché**, which will be left to dry before the second session.
**Day 2 — Painting & Finishing**
We will bring the masks to life through finishing, colour, textures, and expressive accents. You will get insights on choosing your colour palette, mixing colours and painting with acrylic to get different finishing effects.
The workshop closes with a collective sharing moment, where participants can present the character, spirit, or creature behind their mask.
**Dates:** Friday 20 + 27.02 **or** 10 + 17 from 6 to 9.30 PM
Note: this is a two-session workshop (3.5 hours each) with a pause for snacks.
**Where:** *NEW VENUE!* 10963, Kreuzberg. You will receive the exact address after filling the sign-up form.
**Price:** 100€/ 90€ for regular BAC students. Materials are included as well as drinks and snacks.
We encourage you to bring your unique elements (your own special colours, personal materials or objects, small found items, fabrics, feathers, textures, or symbolic elements connected to your mask)
**How to sign up?**

**Our website**: [Kenjutsu Berlin - Official school of Katori Shinto-ryu in Berlin (katoriberlin.org)](https://katoriberlin.org/)
**Katori Shintō-ryū** is one of the oldest Japanese sword fighting traditions (koryū) still practised today and is recognized by the Japanese government as a cultural intangeable asset. The school was founded in the middle of the 15th century by Iizasa Chōisai Ienao at the Katori Shrine (Katori jingū) and has become the origin of numerous other martial arts schools over the course of its almost 600-year history.
The training consists of the continuous repetition of fixed sequences of movements (kata) and includes the use of classic Japanese weapons such as the sword (iai-jutsu, battō-jutsu, ken-jutsu, ryōtō-jutsu, kodachi-jutsu), the long staff (bō-jutsu), the lance (naginata-jutsu) and the spear (sō-jutsu), as well as unarmed disciplines, tactics and spiritual aspects.
**The Katori Berlin dojo** is the only official shibu of Otake Nobutoshi-shihan’s dojo Shinbukan in Germany and fully dedicated to the transmission and study of one martial tradition: Tenshinshō-den Katori Shintō-ryū. Through these efforts we aim to contribute to the cultural preservation of this martial tradition. The dojo has one officially appointed shidosha.
**Our sensei**: Sebastian Graetz has been active in martial arts since 1997. After almost 15 years of taekwondo in Berlin, he started with Katori Shintō-ryū in Asia in 2014. Since then, he has studied in Japan with Ōtake Risuke-shihan and Ōtake Nobutoshi-shihan, and in Vietnam with Malte Stokhof-shihandai. In 2023, he received his Menkyo license and permission to set up a training group in Berlin the following year.

RSVP on Luma: [https://luma.com/70bh22dl?utm_source=Meetup](https://luma.com/70bh22dl?utm_source=Meetup)
Silent Reading / Creating Club is a gathering for people who enjoy focusing together in public.
Bring a book, a notebook, a sketchpad, knitting needles, whatever you’d like to spend a quiet hour doing. All projects and all participants are welcome.
This year is about creating more, quietly, consistently, and imperfectly. We're fostering an environment that supports that. If you’re building something of your own, you’re especially welcome here.
We’re building a community of readers and creators who value depth, presence, and shared silence. The magic isn’t just in the quiet hour — it’s in the people who return and make it feel like a familiar room.
(Please RSVP “yes” only if you can make it, so we can save a seat for you and others on the waitlist.)
This quiet ritual unfolds at **W66 Café**.
There’s no entrance fee, but please order at least one item from the café and don’t bring outside drinks 🙂
No assignments, expectations, or pressure. Just a shared hour of intentional silence, followed by the opportunity for good conversation.

March Book Club Meetup
Welcome, readers!
Our March read is **_The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver._**
The story follows Taylor Greer, a young woman from rural Kentucky who leaves home for the West, only to find herself unexpectedly becoming the guardian of an abused Native American toddler named Turtle. In Tucson, Arizona, they form a makeshift family with a diverse group of people, including Guatemalan refugees and a single mother, exploring themes of motherhood, community, belonging, and finding hope in hardship. The story blends humor with serious issues, creating a story about finding family in unexpected places.
Looking forward to discussing with everyone!
We will meet at Zaftig Brewing Co in their event room in the back. We are welcome to bring in our own food, but **drinks must be purchased at the bar.**
Happy reading! 📖

Shut Up & Write!® East Side Columbus
Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 7:00pm on Wednesday, March 25 at Streetlight Guild.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.
**SCHEDULE:**
6:45ish - Quick introductions
7:00 - Timer starts: write for 1 hour
8:00 - The End
**OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING** happens before and after the writing hour. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
**BEING LATE IS OKAY:** just show up and get settled! If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.
Happy writing & I look forward to seeing you at Streetlight Guild!
**WHAT SHOULD I BRING?**
Whatever you need to be able to write! You're welcome to bring earplugs/headphones if noise will bother you!
**OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS:**
* **RSVP:** Please RSVP by 6:00pm the evening of the meeting. This helps me know how many to expect, and if we'll need additional space!
* **COVID:** While masks are not required, please be mindful of the other writers around you and their comfort levels.
* **WIFI/OUTLETS:** Outlets are limited, so please ensure your devices are charged when you come! But Streetlight Guild does have free WiFi! Yay!
* **PARKING:** There is free public parking at Streetlight Guild.
