Play-reading Downstairs at Megan's
A fortnightly Monday evening play-reading group, led by a professional and experienced actress-directress-coachess, Downstairs at Megan's in Richmond upon Thames.
You don't have to have any stage experience - only the love (suppressed or expressed) of reading out loud; and an interest in joining a friendly group of drama buddies, over a drink and some fun, poignant, poetic, expressive and interactive thoughts, against the beautiful backdrop of the cosy and private downstairs at Megan's.
I will select the play a few days before the meet-up, according to how many members we have, confirmed, making sure that everyone gets to take part.
Copies of the play / script will be provided and there is no minimum spend, curtesy of Megan's - the proud and generous supporters of the local community activities. (I'll be well up for a drink though.)
When you get to the door, just say that you're there for the Play-reading Group, downstairs.
Can't wait to read with you!

Greenwich Easter Lifting
Once a common custom all across England, the tradition of lifting (or heaving) became frowned upon by the Victorians and fell out of popular practise.
'What did those stuffy Victorians disapprove of now!' you may say. 'Look how wholesome! How can morris dancing and ribbons and a throne of flowers be problematic?!'
Oh, you know. Human sacrifice. Fertility rituals. Blasphemy. Drunkenness. Blackmail. Pagan worship. Public indecency.
The usual.
Thought to be the only remaining occurrence of this tradition, you'll get to see the Blackheath Morris group (you may have seen them in the 2012 Olympic closing) lifting and dancing at pubs all over Greenwich, walk off your bank holiday indulgences around one of London's prettiest boroughs, and see and learn about the custom that caused such public outcry-and, if you're a brave woman, jump in the throne yourself!
(Don't worry, they very rarely sacrifice people any more.)
Keep an eye on the comments in the morning to find out how to spot us and feel free to message Kathy for any questions. Both Greenwich Market and the Cutty Sark right next door should also be open from 10am, so feel free to arrive early to grab breakfast or tour the famous ship, and if people fancy it we'll hit the pub for a drink and a chat afterwards!
(This is a free event, so we ask that you please keep RSVPs updated to ensure that as many people as possible who want to come are able to. Cancellations with less than three days’ notice may be removed from the group to prevent wasted spaces in future. Many thanks for your understanding!)
Praed Street Picture Hunt
St Mary’s Hospital was founded in 1845 on Praed Street as a voluntary hospital for ’the deserving sick poor’ and opened the Medical School in 1854. Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin there.
This is another of our many outside Picture Hunts this year. If any issues with weather, we’ll switch to our 50-50 Trivia in the nearby Wetherspoon Sir Alexander Fleming, so turn up as something will be on regardless.
If you’re new to Picture Hunts, check previous events for winners and clue sheets.
This time, the event will be centred around different shops on one side of Praed St, Paddington, so there’s no crossing of busy roads.
Please aim to turn up for 1:00-1:30 when teams are being arranged. The Hunt starts at 1:30. You're losing search time if you're late! Bring a pen please.
As usual, portions of the road are split up into four areas where teams search for the locations of photographed items in the street, buildings or shop windows, and then record where they found them.
Picture Hunts are a great new way to get up to speed with slices of London history while sleuthing around the area.
Everyone is presented with twenty partial photos of objects around an area. Your team mission is to find them. Some well known, some well unknown!
This makes Picture Hunts more interesting and challenging, bringing out the best of your teams detecting skills.
You will also have a map of the area. It will be sub-divided into four sections, P, Q, R, S. Each photo will come from one of these.
Four players max per team, but the lower number teams get a point per player start from the biggest team.
For example, four teams of one, two, three and four. Four player team, no advantage, (the biggest and theoretically the more knowledge between them, except it doesn't always work like that). Three player team, one point start. Two player team, two point start. One player team, three point start.
Scores are always close and around the 15-20 points mark. How many players do you want in your team? There's a dilemma!
The clipboard holder enters one of the letters to note its area location. Dead simple, right? 90 minutes to do the hunt.
We have the usual prizes of chocolate, including some great new varieties.
There is also an equal prize for the funniest team name judged by Sue, my glamorous assistant. Names win prizes too! So there’s everything to play for.
We mark up at the quiz finish point. The Wetherspoon Sir Alexander Fleming.
Hunts are good fun and the proven experience so far is that members get to know each other better after working in teams as you all have to communicate. Great icebreakers.
This is what Meetup is all about. Come and join us.
There is a £7 cash/card charge for this event.
Contact number on the day is 07422334411 if your transport is delayed.
**If you can’t make it, please cancel using the “Edit RSVP Button”.**
**Your consideration is greatly appreciated.**
London Bridge Writers' Group - Pub Meet
**The Talbot Room at the George Inn**
The George provides the room free of charge (they are awesome), and we encourage you to purchase drinks (and food – the burgers are great!). As it’s a pub and not a picnic area, please don’t consume your own food and drink there.
We usually meet in the Talbot room which is on the top floor on the left hand side of the pub as viewed from the courtyard. If lost please send a message here shortly before the meeting starts.
**We are sorry to say that there is no step-free access to the Talbot room, and it is at the end of three flights of stairs.**
**Format**
We start at 7pm and run until 9pm. We hear approximately six readings of 10 minutes (\~2000 words), then discuss the piece for 10 minutes. Email your work to: london60transmitter@emailitin.com as an attachment (It must be an attachment). A link for access to googledocs will be given at the start of each session to enable people to read along, which in turn enables more considered feedback. Work submitted will be automatically deleted after 10 days. We decide on readers/pieces at the beginning of each session.
**Safe and respectful space**
The group is run by volunteers, and we don’t have the capacity to read submitted work in advance. If there is anything in your work that might distress or disturb some readers, for example concerning any kind of abuse, please give a trigger warning before you read. Be specific and concise. If it becomes apparent during a reading that a piece is inappropriate, the moderator will stop the reading. In discussing others’ work, please be mindful of how you express yourself and do not use discriminatory language, even if such language features in the piece.

Book Bedazzling (BYOB) - Bloodguard by Cecy Robson
Let's bedazzle some books while we discuss our April pick: Bloodguard by Cecy Robson!
Book description:
One hundred years. Tens of thousands of gladiators. And today, only one will rise…
Everything in the Kingdom of Arrow is a lie.
Leith of Grey thought coming to this new land and volunteering to fight in the gladiator arena—vicious, bloodthirsty tournaments where only the strongest survive—would earn him enough gold to save his dying sister. He thought there was nothing left to lose.
He was wrong—and they took everything. His hope. His freedom. His very humanity.
All Leith has left is his battle-scarred body, fueled by rage and hardened from years of fighting for the right to live another day.
Then Leith meets Maeve, an elven royal who is everything he despises. Everything he should hate. Until the alluring princess offers him the one thing he needs most: a chance to win the coveted title of Bloodguard—and his freedom.
But in a kingdom built on secrets and lies, hope doesn’t come cheap.
Nor will his ultimate revenge…
Event:
Please bring your own book, journal, bookmarks, etc to bedazzle. If you have bedazzling supplies, please bring them as well. I will supply gems, glue, and picker tools, but if you have certain colors in mind, you may want to bring your own.

Bad Girls Book Club April 2026
**Our April novel is: *The Hong Kong Widow* by Kristen Loesch**
**This month’s novel blends gothic atmosphere with historical fiction and chilling horror, set against the haunting backdrop of China. The book is 368 pages in print and 10 hours and 42 minutes on audiobook.**
In 1950s Hong Kong, Mei is a young refugee of the Chinese Communist revolution struggling to put her past in Shanghai behind her. When she receives a shocking invitation—to take part in a competition in one of the city's most notorious haunted houses, pitting six spirit mediums against one another in a series of six séances over six nights, until a single winner emerges—she has every reason to refuse.
Except that the hostess, a former Shanghainese silent film star, is none other than the wife of the man who once destroyed Mei’s entire life.
It is promised the winner will receive a fortune, but there is only one prize Mei wants: revenge.
Decades later, the final night of that competition has become an infamous urban legend: The police were called to the scene of a brutal massacre but found no evidence, dismissing it as a collective hallucination. Mei knows what she saw, but now someone else is convinced they know what she did. She must uncover the truth about the last night she ever spent in that house—even if the ghosts of her past are waiting for her there. . . .
What Causes Your Roller Coasters in Life?
Do you sometimes feel like you do well in life then something happens and you slide back, never quite getting ahead.
At this Meetup you'll find out how to identify what actually causes the lows, the highs and everything in between. More importantly you’ll get the secret of how to gain control over your life so the highs are higher and the lows go away.
Wouldn’t it be nice to stop the wild roller coaster ride for good? Or at least make it a fun roller coaster ride, with more ups and downs.
There is a hidden factor that will be going over and you’re going to be quite surprised what it is and how much it affects your life.
Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to the event. We look forward to seeing you there.
This group is hosted at the Dianetics and Scientology Life Improvement Center.
Disc Tues / Choose Your Movie: THE CHRISTOPHERS vs NORMAL at the Gateway!
Join us as we get together for a Discount Tuesday / Choose Your Movie event to see your choice of two great new films! Option 1 (and the one I'll be seeing) is the top-reviewed comedy-drama, THE CHRISTOPHERS! The film is set in the art world and follows the estranged children of a former artist who hire a forger. It is directed by Steven Soderberg, stars Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel and has been earning rave reviews on the indie circuit. Option 2 is the latest action-thriller starring Bob Odenkirk, NORMAL! The film follows a temporary small-town sheriff who uncovers dark mysteries after a local bank robbery. Here are descriptions, trailers and our plan for this event:
THE CHRISTOPHERS: The children of a once famous artist hire a forger to complete some unfinished, long ago abandoned canvases so they'll have a better inheritance when he dies. It is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel, Jessica Gunning and James Corden. BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film is earning an excellent 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes where critics call it a “dynamic, emotional and surprising journey” and a “compelling chamber piece that works like intellectual comfort food.” Others call the film, an “incredibly funny, comedy drama with plot reversals that make it feel like it’s on the verge of a thriller!” TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H79-EqzmdwY&t=20s
NORMAL: This action-crime-thriller follows a man who comes to the sleepy town of Normal, Minnesota to serve as the temporary sheriff. But a bank robbery leads him to a criminal underground reaches throughout the entire town. The film is directed by Ben Wheatley and stars Bob Odenkirk, Henry Winkler and Lena Headey. The film comes from the same team that brought us Nobody and the John Wick series, so expect an over-the-top, action-filled thrill ride! TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rmm-lM33Qw0&t=19s
PLAN: We’ll plan for a 7pm-ish showing of both films and will meet in the lobby area about 30 minutes before showtime. Once showtimes are announced, advance ticket purchase is advised (GFC website preferred)! Please list your movie of choice and seat number in the Comments section of this event. Showtimes and complete details will be confirmed/announced as the date gets closer.
PARKING: Close, convenient parking is available in the nearby garage (located between 9th and 11th, just off High St). Bring your ticket with you and have it validated at the theater and for $2, you’re covered for the night!
Look forward to seeing you there, Dan
