KUMIKO LAMP
KUMIKO LAMP
**Bookable via our website โžก๏ธ** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/kumiko-coasters-56/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/kumiko-coasters-56/) **โ‹†โ‹†โ‹†** **Course:** Intro to Japanese Joinery โ€“ Kumiko Woodwork Lamp **Suitable for:** Absolute beginners. No prior experience in woodworking is required for this course. **About:** This evening course shows you the basics of setting out and cutting the traditional Kumiko woodwork designs to create a lamp. If you havenโ€™t already discovered the Japanese wood craft of Kumiko, you are in for a treat. Kumiko is a technique that uses no nails or hardware, just precise joints to keep furniture and even houses together. It is intricate and functional and a lot of fun to make. Using a small tool set and simple techniques this quiet craft can yield some spectacular pieces. The traditional handicraft has been handed down for centuries but now artisans are taking the age-old concept and applying the designs to more modern-day household items. This is an ideal follow up workshop from the Kumiko coaster one day workshop which introduces you to the basics of setting out and cutting the traditional designs. It is also suitable for confident beginners. The Kumiko lamp uses traditional Japanese tools. The outer frame is created in walnut and the mini Kumiko screen is composed of cleverly cut bass wood to form a modern version of an ancient *Ijutsu* design. The small pieces are cut using an accurate shooting board and a sharp hand plane, then slid into place and backed with *Shoji* paper. The designs for *Kumiko* pieces arenโ€™t chosen randomly. In fact, many of the nearly 200 patterns used today have been around since the Edo era (1603-1868). Each design has a meaning or is mimicking a pattern in nature that is thought to be a good omen. The designs are not just pretty, they also distribute light and wind in a calming and beautiful way. It may look complicated but in reality, like all woodwork โ€“ itโ€™s just a series of steps. Give it a try โ€“ you may do better than you expect. Auram Desforges, who grew up working on wood frame houses with his father in Canada has devised this elegant lamp. This course is held over 6 evenings and is particularly suitable for those who have completed the one day [Kumiko coaster](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/kumiko-coasters/) workshop. The use of all tools, materials and LED tea light is included. The dimensions of the finished lamp is 132mmH x 132mmD x 132mmW.

THE COMING OF AGE then coffee and cake ๐Ÿฐ
**What does it really mean to grow older?** ๐Ÿฅ This meetup takes us to The Coming of Age, a thought-provoking exhibition exploring how our experiences of ageing are shaped by culture, society and the world around us. Bringing together art, science and personal stories, the exhibition challenges common assumptions about different stages of life - from youth and adulthood to later years. ๐ŸŽจ Featuring over 150 artworks and objects by leading contemporary artists alongside historical artefacts, the exhibition invites us to reflect on longevity, identity and what it means to age well in a rapidly changing world. ๐ŸŽซ **Admission is free. There is no requirement to book a ticket.** **We will meet at the exhibition entrance.** [More info about the exhibit here.](https://wellcomecollection.org/exhibitions/the-coming-of-age) โ˜•๏ธ We will take 45minutes to 1 hour to explore the exhibit then go for coffee in the galleryโ€™s cafe or somewhere nearby. Everyone welcome ๐Ÿ™‚ Important to note: 1. We typically socialise at cafรฉs after the exhibit, nice, independent ones, not chains and not at pubs. If the event is late on a Saturday we go to a nice bar/pub for drinks after. This meetup is inclusive and everyone is welcome to join. 2. If you get there before everyone and you're not sure what to do or where we are, post a comment on here and I will let you know our whereabouts. 3. Once we go in we may separate, feel free to explore the exhibit by yourself, we don't have to be together. Some people like chatting to others while exploring and other people prefer to be with their own thoughts. You are welcome to express yourself and do whatever makes you feel comfortable. 4. If you are late or if you've booked for an earlier or later time don't worry just go in and you'll find us inside. Keep an eye on the comments as I'll e posting updates.

**Bookable via our website โžก๏ธ** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/whittle-a-spoon-9/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/whittle-a-spoon-9/) **โ‹†โ‹†โ‹†** Like spoons? Youโ€™ll love this. If the idea of carving a spoon appeals to you, but setting out into a muddy wood and starting your learning by wielding an axe seems somewhat daunting, join us for a one-day course that will bypass all that and yet give you the immense satisfaction of watching a fully-fledged spoon emerge from your handiwork. Each spoon will be carved using seasoned wood and we will use Lime โ€“ a light, silky smooth and close-grained wood- used by great master carvers in St Paul Cathedral and stately homes. In one day, you will learn how to create a spoon from Lime wood- a traditional seasoned hardwood that holds detail and is a pleasure to carve with a cutout decoration detail in the handle. This can be a straight handle or a heart, but if you have an idea for a simple design, we can try and make this possible too. Your spoon will be a gift to keep for yourself or give to your loved one. This course is taught by Jon Hall, a talented professional City and Guild trained carver who teaches our one-day โ€˜Intro to Woodcarvingโ€™. We supply all the tools and materials and can advise you on which simple tools to buy to carry on this fascinating hobby. Love Spoons. In folk museums and heritage craft collections throughout Europe and the UK, you can sometimes see versions of these charming โ€˜Lovespoonsโ€™- some with one or two hearts carved out of their handles. The traditional lovespoon was made by a man who gave it to his beloved in order to show his skills and commitment. Her father would also have been able to see the manโ€™s craftsmanship. Some of them are full of complex symbolism. A lock denoting security, a cross for faith, horseshoes for luck, bells for marriage and some including interlinked chains. As a โ€˜pastimeโ€™, many hours were spent on them and sailors passed their free time embellishing them with mermaids and anchors. One-day course 10.00 โ€“ 5.00pm.
