HAND CANING FURNITURE
HAND CANING FURNITURE
**Bookable via our website โžก๏ธ** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/hand-caning-furniture-97/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/hand-caning-furniture-97/) **โ‹†โ‹†โ‹†** **Also known as Hand, Strand or Hole-to-Hole Caning.** KEY PROJECT: HAND CANED WOOD FRAME. Suitable for beginners. Enjoyable for all. One-day weekend workshop. 10am โ€“ 5pm. Ever seen a great chair in a junk shop but noticed that the caning that spans the seat is sadly coming away at the edges? Sometimes a chair that had been caned has had an unsightly slab of plywood tacked onto the broken seat. This is an opportunity to increase your upholstery know-how and bring a โ€˜once prettyโ€™ seat up to scratch. Now you will be able to snap up a bargain and re-cane the seat yourself. The task is not as daunting as you think and can be done easily in a domestic setting with no specialist equipment- unless a washing-up bowl and some golf tees could be defined as such. This is a very old traditional craft, sometimes known as hand, strand or hole-to-hole caning. Specialist split cane is woven from side to side and fixed in place. During the one-day workshop, upholstery expert Netty Erw will inspire confidence while guiding you through the stages of intertwining the fine split canes. At the end of the day, you will have completed a square panel of traditional caning to take home with pride. The skills learnt during the day will enable you to embark on your own project at home. Netty has learned her skills from her clever aunt Rachael South, who in turn learned from her grandfather. We are thrilled to share in this generation's cascade of talent. All use of tools and materials supplied. We have a cane to buy after the course if you want to get started as soon as you get home. Beginners welcome. No previous experience in upholstery is required. If your chair is wobbly or scuffed โ€“ or even repainted, you can come to our โ€˜[Intro to Furniture Restoration](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/furniture-restoration-wood-revival/)โ€˜ day course and learn how to make it look loved and valued again.

DIY IN A DAY โ€“ DRILLS
DIY IN A DAY โ€“ DRILLS
**Bookable via our website โžก๏ธ** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/diy-in-a-day-drills-352/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/diy-in-a-day-drills-352/) **โ‹†โ‹†โ‹†** Learn the basics at this fast-paced but relaxed one-day workshop. A perfect starter for all those annoying jobs around the house that you feel you should be able to tackleโ€ฆif only you knew how. We know itโ€™s frustrating to wait for it to be done and then get charged for it and we understand it can be a bit daunting to head into a wall with a power drill. Pick up the skills to hang curtains, blinds, and simple shelves on any wall. Learn to drill into wood, brick, tiles, or hollow walls with confidence. We will show you how to judge what is behind the walls before you drill. An enjoyable โ€˜ hands-onโ€™ one-day workshop that covers many of the common aspects of basic DIY. If you have just bought your home and have realized it didnโ€™t include a landlord to fix stuff, or just donโ€™t want to rely on someone else, this day is for you. There is plenty of time to practice on several exercises over the day. The workshop also covers hanging pictures and heavier objects like mirrors, cupboards, and flat-screen TVs. You will learn how to hang a hook, fix a baton, and then a pair of level shelf brackets. Finish off the day learning how to fit shelves into awkward alcoves โ€“ a handy skill you can use to fit work surfaces too. Learn how to select the correct drill bit, wall fixing, and screw to secure things confidently. The day will also include a chance to fill small and medium holes in wood and walls to prepare your surfaces for painting. Along the way, we show you how to remove old wall fixings and what to do with the ones you canโ€™t. This a fun fast day with plenty of tools to try and lots of advice on which tools to have in a basic toolkit. If you are thinking of upgrading your drill, you can test all of the ones we use and feel more knowledgeable about what you want to buy. This course is especially suitable if you are not handy or if you are able, but not that confident, about tackling small but important tasks in your home. We will also suggest how to tell if a task is appropriate for DIY or GSI (Get Someone In). You will take home a set of skills that will last a lifetime. All tools and materials included. Perfect for beginners.

INTRO TO WOODWORK โ€“ BASIC WOOD JOINTS - 2 SUNDAYS
INTRO TO WOODWORK โ€“ BASIC WOOD JOINTS - 2 SUNDAYS
**Bookable via our website โžก๏ธ** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/intro-to-woodwork-basic-wood-joints-2-sundays-2/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/intro-to-woodwork-basic-wood-joints-2-sundays-2/) โ‹†โ‹†โ‹† A beginner's course that goes straight to the heart of woodworking. This five-week evening course will focus on timeless variations of wood joints that can be used for an endless amount of woodwork projects. Develop your skills with a saw, chisel and plane so that you can measure and mark out your work, cut, fit and glue joints accurately, ensuring your woodwork is strong, durable and darn good-looking. Learn these classic wood joints while you hone your making ability, and set free your ideas for furniture, box-making and all things fabulous. During the course, you will learn the uses and advantages of each joint as you construct a framework of sample joints. This project is a classic learning method. The **half-lap joint** can be used to make frames for pictures, perimeter door frames for panel or glass doors, dust dividers in cabinets and in many other situations. Because the half-lap does not add any thickness to the pieces of wood being joined, there are virtually no limitations for using it. The **mitred half** lap is an elegant yet strong corner joint, with its diagonal cut constructed with an internal half lap, The **tee halving** is a versatile joint which is often used in internal cabinet frames and simple framing and bracing. The **half dovetail** is a very strong type of joint because of the way the โ€˜tailsโ€™ and โ€˜pinsโ€™ are shaped. This shape makes it difficult to pull the joint apart and virtually impossible when glue is added. This type of joint is used in box constructions such as draws, jewellery boxes, cabinets and other pieces of furniture where strength is required. All use of tools and materials included. Perfect for beginners.
 Sunday 5th July ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ THE 5-STOP GIRLY BAKERY RUN & PICNIC ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿฅ
Sunday 5th July ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ THE 5-STOP GIRLY BAKERY RUN & PICNIC ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿฅ
Letโ€™s be real... the only thing better than a Sunday morning run is a Sunday morning run that involves **FIVE** different bakeries, immaculate vibes, and a park picnic with the girls. Welcome to the Girly Bakery Run - not your average run club, but a rolling 5k pastry crawl through central London! Whether you run every day, haven't run since school, or literally just want to walk and eat baked goods (same), you need to be here. This is the ultimate, low-pressure Sunday morning. Think: beautiful London streets, securing the bag(s) at five iconic spots, and ending with a huge community picnic in the park to sip our coffees, debrief, and eat our body weight in butter. ### ๐ŸŽ€ The Setup Weโ€™ve escalated this to a 5-stop tour because we simply couldn't narrow it down. We've got the route, the timings, and the picnic spot completely sorted so you can just rock up and vibe. * **The Route:** Weโ€™re doing a \~5k loop hitting up **Chestnut Bakery**, **Ole & Steen**, **Cรถรถdie**, plus **two surprise stops** along the way (& moreeee!). We will be ending the route at our final stop to grab iced coffees/matchas before heading to the park. * **Whatโ€™s included:** Your ticket is a tiny cover charge to help us host the event, map out this epic 5-stop route, run the community, and set up our post-run picnic spot! * **The Strategy:** Sharing is HIGHLY recommended! The best way to survive a 5-stop pastry crawl is to split treats with your new besties so you get to taste a little bit of everything without crashing before the park. * **What to bring:** * **The Cargo:** Bring a small backpack, tote, or cross-body bag to safely stash your pastries as we move! * **The Funds:** Everyone will be buying their own treats and final coffees, so have your Apple Pay ready. (You can obviously eat a little as we go, hehe, but the ultimate goal is to build a massive stash for the park!) ### ๐Ÿ“ The Details * **When:** Sunday 5th July, meeting at 10:00 AM sharp. * **Start Line:** Bond Street Station (Elizabeth Line). * **The Paces:** Choose your own adventure! Weโ€™ll be splitting into two groups, and **we will have a dedicated leader for both**, so absolutely no one gets left behind: * ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ **The Slow Run Group:** A super easy, chatty, sexy pace. * ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ **The Walking Group:** A gorgeous, leisurely stroll between bakeries. * *(Note: We are leaving lots of time for the movement, queuing at 5 different stops, and getting to know each other. This is a rough itinerary, so if things shift on the day, we just roll with it!)* * **Dietary Requirements:** Please note that weโ€™ll be visiting standard bakeries. While many will offer vegetarian and vegan options, if you have strict dietary requirements or severe allergies (like gluten, dairy, or nuts), please double-check with the staff at each location before purchasing! * **The Finish Line:** After our fifth and final coffee/bakery stop, the movement part is *done*. We'll walk together to a nearby park, lay out the blankets, and feast on everything weโ€™ve gathered! ### ๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Tickets * **Bakery Run & Picnic Ticket:** ยฃ6.00 **Lace up your favourite running or walking shoes, grab your pastry-carrying backpack, and come spend Sunday morning with the best girls in London! ๐Ÿฅโ˜•๏ธ๐Ÿ‘Ÿโœจ**
