Sunday Assembly London Article Club #77
Here is a recap of how the Club works:
1\. We meet every six weeks or so in or near the National Theatre\.
2\. We vote in advance and pick two articles from a short list to read before we meet\. Usually one relates to politics/current affairs and the other to history\, culture or science\.
3\. We talk about each one for around half an hour and the beauty of Article Club is that we can think more deeply about the broader themes of a topic\, and how well the article gets to grips with them\.
4\. We each give a score out of 10 for the articles that have been discussed\.
5\. We set the date for the next Article Club and sometimes adjourn to the pub\.
I will post in the comments a Google form that you can use to vote for the articles you would like to read and discuss at this event.
The point of Article Club is to challenge ourselves to read a diverse range of articles, share them with like-minded people and deal with our anxiety that we aren't reading books. Article Club was set up by Ross Bailey in 2015 who did a fantastic job at running it. Ross was followed by the equally fantastic Claire Ferraro and I (Alistair Baker) have been in the chair for the past eight years.
OUR NEXT MEETUP: ARTICLE CLUB #77
Thursday 2nd July 2026 - 7:30pm to around 9:15pm. We sit on the soft round seats in the Lyttelton Theatre bar on the first floor.

How to Find Your Basic Purpose - Workshop!
'HOW TO FIND YOUR BASIC PURPOSE'
A Life Improvement free workshop with Maria Bennett.
In this a live in-venue workshop:
\- Do you know your basic purpose?
\- What makes a person's basic purpose?
\- Practical drills to help you define your own basic purpose\.
Pen and paper provided,so - let's get stuck in!!
Using information taken from the book '*Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health*' by L. Ron Hubbard.
*Testimonial:*
*"Great seminar. I liked how you took us through step by step and we found our own basic purposes. It is a common basic purpose for all, I believe. I realised that the spiritual is more important to me than anything else. My purpose is to help others and the webinar validated things I do. I liked how the participants feel free to communicate their situations. My win was that I can use your method to help others find their basic purpose too. Thanks!" - VR*
Maria: I have worked at the Scientology Life Improvement Centre helping and coaching others for over 20 years.
I enjoy this a lot! I have access to tools that anyone can put to use in their life to make the positive improvements that they may be looking for.
I look forward to meeting you.
What can you do after the workshop?
We have various other free services that you could do - such as the free personality test. We also have a lot of Life Improvement Courses. These focus on specific areas of life to help 'unblock' them, put your actual abilities to use!

Immigration and Freedom of Movement
This week we will be delving into a real hot topic of the modern moment: immigration. Often, it is viewed as a black and white social issue, drawing a deep chasm between left and right, but is that really the true story? Crime, lack of housing, lack of jobs, strain on the NHS and benefits: What really are the impacts of immigration on our towns and communities?
Economic theory is generally positive on migration, pointing towards increased GDP, employment and overall growth. However, many blame immigrants for various social ills. One of the important questions of this discussion could be: do those people have any point at all?
Are the broad effects of migration the full story? Can the overall increases in GDP and employment rate really speak for migration on the whole?
This promises to be a spicy one. Your reading materials are below the following starter questions for 10:
1. What do we mean by "migration"? Who are âmigrantsâ?
2. Who benefits from migration, and in what ways?
3. What challenges, if any, do you think are caused by migration?
4. What is integration, and what aims should we have, if any, for the integration of migrants into our society?
This week, we have no singular article to draw upon. Rather, a summary sheet has been pulled together from a few sources: [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lltuwyfxfTJvEy861LzlZK_kuzEbL8rdSGbfsMDwiEI/edit?usp=sharing](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lltuwyfxfTJvEy861LzlZK_kuzEbL8rdSGbfsMDwiEI/edit?usp=sharing)
This is from where we shall draw our discussion.
Extra to the sources in the summary are the following:

Thames Foreshore Visit - Limekiln Dock (Full Members only)
Running through the heart of London; the River Thames has played a central role in the history of the city, and when the tide is low, the capitalâs longest archaeological site is revealed.
Come along on Sunday 5th July to explore its history!
**About the foreshore**
I will be your guide as we will be going down to the Thames foreshore at low tide and walking along the foreshore, where we will have about 1h 30mins to have a look around for objects before the tide comes in. Where we are going is an old dock that leads onto the foreshore.
I will tell you more about foreshore, the industry in the area and will be on hand to identify and date objects you find. Most objects you can spot sitting on the foreshore after being washed in on the tide (its eyes only, we are not allowed to dig or scrape the foreshore surface).
You will find everything from bits of pottery, clay pipes, bottles, animal bones to ship items. Most of the things we find are from the Medieval to the Victorian period or you might be lucky and find something Roman or older.
We should be finished by 12noon.
**The Thames Foreshore is private land, so before we go down, I have to give everyone a short talk on health & safety on the foreshore. As per the conditions of my group permit, you will need to be present for this, if you are late, I won't be able to accommodate you.**
**Footwear**
The foreshore is very stony, but can be muddy in places, so please wear sensible shoes (preferably walking boots/shoes or wellington boots). Plastic gloves and bags will be provided.
**Payment**
This is for Full Members of the group only and will be free.

July 4th ft. The Mayflower
**7.00 -** **The Ship, 39/47 St. Marychurch Street, SE16 4JE**
**8.00/8.15 - The Mayflower, 117 Rotherhithe Street,** **SE16 4NF**
**9.45/10.00 - The Brunel, 47 Swan Road,** **SE16 4JN**
As it's not just any old July 4th, but the 250th, I thought we'd take in a bit of history and pay a visit to where it all began. The Mayflower is named after the ship chartered by the Pilgrim Fathers for their voyage to the New World in 1620. It left from nearby moorings that are apparently still visible at low tide, although the pub itself dates from 1780.
The Mayflower will be the main feature but we'll be starting at The Ship, 39/47 St. Marychurch Street, SE16 4JE - [The Ship](https://shiprotherhithe.co.uk/) \- which is just a short walk from Rotherhithe station on the London Overground network\. Turn right as you leave the station and walk around 200 hundred yards down Brunel Road \- past Hatteraick Road and a couple of small side streets \- then turn right into Rupack Street and you'll see the pub straight ahead of you\.
Rotherhithe is one stop from Canada Water (Jubilee line) or three stops from Whitechapel (Elizabeth line). From Canada Water you want the front of the train and from Whitechapel you want the back of the train. You won't be able to get to Whitechapel using the District or Hammersmith & City lines on this date.
As the travelling will be a bit more challenging than normal for some of us, I have put up slightly earlier starting and finishing times so there's a bit more leeway to get home at the end of the night.
The plan is to move on to The Mayflower, 117 Rotherhithe Street, SE16 4NF - [The Mayflower](https://www.mayflowerpub.co.uk/) \- at around 8\.00/8\.15 and then The Brunel\, 47 Swan Road\, SE16 4JN \- [Home - Star Pubs](https://www.brunel-rotherhithe.co.uk/) \- at around 9\.45/10\.00\. The Brunel is open until 1am\.
All of the pubs have outside areas, so that's where we'll be if the weather's fine.
As ever, we may do things differently on the night. Please take a note of my number - 07761-816862 - so that you can phone me if you can't find us **(but no texts or messaging please)**.
