LM: Spruce Knob/Seneca Creek (~19 miles)
LM: Spruce Knob/Seneca Creek (~19 miles)
Veronica's Spruce Knob trip later in June reminded me that I really want to hike this area, but I'm busy that weekend. Come do a relaxed exploration of Spruce Knob/Seneca Creek with me earlier in June! On Saturday and Sunday, we will cover \~11 miles and \~8 miles respectively, depending on which campsites are available near the falls. Here is our planned route on Caltopo ([https://caltopo.com/m/N970BF1](https://caltopo.com/m/N970BF1)). This is a great trip for "applicants" (meaning that this is your first DCUL trip), so I'll reserve 5 applicant spots out of 10 total spots. Because I'm setting those spots aside, it may look like the trip is already full, but if you're an applicant, join the waitlist and I'll add you from there. If this is your first DCUL trip, please send me a list of your gear. You can learn about membership ranks [here](https://dculbackpacking.com/about/membership/). And no worries if your gear isn't ultralight. This is a low mileage (LM) trip. Read about DCUL's trip ranks [here](https://dculbackpacking.com/about/tripranks/). We'll meet at the Vienna metro (north side parking lot) at 8 am on Saturday and drive to the Spruce Knob Parking Lot ([Directions](https://maps.app.goo.gl/hEs3TR7Ggpvi2Pce9)), arriving around 11:30 or noon and start hiking from there. There are a lot of water features and at least one water crossing that may be deep, so you might want to bring sandals and other things that can get wet. If it's warm, some might go swimming! Saturday evening we'll camp nearish to Seneca Falls, depending on which campsites are available. Sunday we'll pass by the site of a plane crash from the 80s. We'll stop for lunch on the drive home. DCULers have maps! Some options: * Purple Lizard Dolly Sods-Seneca Rocks ([https://www.purplelizard.com/products/dolly-sods-seneca-rocks-map](https://www.purplelizard.com/products/dolly-sods-seneca-rocks-map)) * [https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5433335.pdf](https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5433335.pdf) * Caltopo [https://caltopo.com/m/N970BF1](https://caltopo.com/m/N970BF1) **Waiver**: By RSVPing to this trip or any other DC UL trip, you agree to these guidelines and to DC UL's waiver liability terms ([https://dculbackpacking.com/about/liability-waiver/](https://dculbackpacking.com/about/liability-waiver/)) **Carpool**: As per our carpool policy, riders should pay drivers $0.10/mile. Total driving distance is around 334 miles, so all non-drivers should expect to pay $35 or so to their driver.

Shadowdark Campaign: Gunderholfen and Other Adventures
Shadowdark Campaign: Gunderholfen and Other Adventures
A biweekly open-table **West Marches Shadowdark campaign** based mainly on a collection of OSR adventures written by G. Hawkins. **What You'll Need:** 1. *(Recommended):* A laptop, tablet or phone (I will bring a power strip for charging). We will be using a virtual table-top (Owlbear Rodeo), which does not require installation or an account. Alternatively, players can forego the VTT and play using a "Theatre-of-the-Mind" approach. 2. *(Optional)* The *Shadowdark RPG Core Rulebook* or a downloaded copy of the free *[Player Quickstart Guide](http://%5B%5Bhttps//%5Bwww.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf%5D%5D%5D(www.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf%5D%5D)(%5Bhttps://www.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf%5D%5D(https://www.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf%5D))(%5B%5Bhttps://www.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf%5D%5D(https://www.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf%5D)(%5Bhttps://www.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf%5D(https://www.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf))))*[.](http://%5B%5Bhttps//%5Bwww.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf%5D%5D%5D(www.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf%5D%5D)(%5Bhttps://www.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf%5D%5D(https://www.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf%5D))(%5B%5Bhttps://www.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf%5D%5D(https://www.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf%5D)(%5Bhttps://www.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf%5D(https://www.thearcanelibrary.com/collections/shadowdark-core-rules/products/shadowdark-rpg-quickstart-set-pdf)))) 3. **Character design:** Players will roll character stats in person, either with physical dice or using the character-creation-rolls channel in my Discord server. Characters start at level 1. Players can create a stable of up to three characters to choose for use in sessions. If a character dies, a new character can be created (at level 1) as above. I recommend that created characters be entered into the online Shadowdark character creation resource *[[Shadowdarklings.net](http://shadowdarklings.net/)]([https://shadowdarklings.net/create](https://shadowdarklings.net/create))* for long-term storage and updating between sessions. 4. You can bring physical dice or use the VTT built-in dice roller.
Three Waterfalls near Big Meadows
Three Waterfalls near Big Meadows
Adventurers! Get ready for a waterfall filled hike in the Big Meadows section of Shenandoah National Park. We will visit Dark Hollow Falls, Rose River Falls and Lewis Falls, giving us a total of 218 ft (!!) of waterfalls, and a great excuse to Dynamically Lollygag™. As usual, expect rocky and possibly muddy trails as we traverse 8 miles and gain 2100 ft total elevation. This easy side of strenuous hike is the fourth in a series to visit all the named waterfalls in Shenandoah NP. You will need to bring at least 3 liters of your favorite hydration beverage, plus sturdy boots and bug spray. Also bring a bag lunch and enough for snacking during the day. (You will have an opportunity to buy these at our usual Sheetz stop on the way to the trailhead.) Plan for a meal stop on the drive back. (I will poll the attendees after the hike to see if we also crave the Blackberry Ice Cream at Big Meadows Lodge, or even its famous Mile-High Blackberry Ice Cream Pie.) We may return as late as 9 p.m. Costs of this outing include your $5 Adventuring fee, plus $20 for your driver and your cost for a light dinner. Meet by 8:30 a.m. to form carpools in the East Falls Church Metro Kiss & Ride lot; please answer the RSVP questions, so the trip leader can organize the carpool. Failure to answer may result in your reservation being removed. We will depart promptly. Also, contact the trip leader if you prefer to meet at the trailhead. This is a challenging hike, so please be aerobically fit. Also, if your plans change, make sure to reverse your RSVP status ASAP. Otherwise, you may be marked as a no-show. IMPORTANT NOTE: When you RSVP to an event, you affirm that you have read and agree to the terms of the release. As usual, non-assisted bikers are most welcome. **About Jones Point Lighthouse** The lighthouse is one of the last riverine lighthouses in the country and the only one still standing in the Chesapeake Bay area. It was first lit on May 3, 1856 by keeper George L. Deeton. Today it is the focal point of Jones Point Park and a clue to area's history as a busy commercial center and naval base. Whale oil lamps were originally used to power the beacon at Jones Point, but in 1858 the Lighthouse Board allowed an Alexandria gas company to extend lines to the station. The land included one of the original District of Columbia boundary stones, which was installed by George Washington and marked the southern point of the ten-mile-square district. The stone is still visible today in the seawall just south of the lighthouse, and to the north of the lighthouse a marker designating the boundary between Maryland-Virginia can be seen. **About Fort Foote** Fort Foote was constructed in 1863 atop Rozier's Bluff to strengthen the ring of fortifications that encircled Washington, D.C. Two of the Guns that protected Washington are still there along with the remains of the fort's earthworks. **About the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge** Also known as the Woodrow Wilson Bridge or the Wilson Bridge, the bridge is a bascule bridge that spans the Potomac River between the city of Alexandria, Virginia, and Oxon Hill in Prince George's County, Maryland. The original bridge was one of only a handful of drawbridges in the U.S. Interstate Highway System. **About National Harbor** National Harbor is situated on the banks of the historic Potomac River, just minutes from the nation’s capital. Featuring 350 acres of waterfront resort space, National Harbor is a destination unlike any other. The harbor is home to 160 stores, 40 restaurants, the Capital Wheel, and the best sunsets in the area. **Free Ride With GPS for E-Bike Lovers** Membership of the Ride With GPS E-bike Lovers club is now free as www.ebikelovers.com is generating sufficient income from ads to cover the costs. 4-mile Rock Creek Park and Pierce Mill hike
4-mile Rock Creek Park and Pierce Mill hike
This is a 4 mile, beginner friendly hike through Rock Creek park that will start at the Woodley Park metro station and end at the Van Ness metro station. The majority of the hike follows the Rock Creek, Zoo Loop and Western Ridge trails with views of the water of Rock Creek along the way. We will take a break at Pierce Mill – a water-powered gristmill that was built in 1829 - and hikers will have some time to look around the historical site. Public bathrooms are available near our break spot. After the mill, we will continue onto the Soapstone Valley trail and finally exit Rock Creek Park near the Van Ness Metro station. The route is mostly paved until we enter the Soapstone Valley trail which is unpaved. In the last mile, we will criss-cross a shallow stream a few times. There will be some uphills and downhills throughout the hike but they are not strenuous and our pace will be relaxed. The hike will begin at the Woodley Park-Zoo Metro Station, finishing at the Van Ness-UDC Metro Station. Led by Cherrelle Dacon and Peg Barratt for the AMC Potomac Chapter
