VMO/IO: Susquehannock Trail System (STS) ~84mi
I've decided last minute to do the STS loop in 3 days. I've made this VMO/IO because of the challenging nature of this hike. Splits are roughly 31/29/24. The plan is to start early on Friday morning camping at the Spook Hollow Shelter, then stopping at Debs Cross Fork Inn for lunch, go to the Gravel Lick Shelter. The final day is back to the car and head home.
Here is a trip report from another DCUL trip to this trail: https://dculbackpacking.com/2022/06/02/trip-report-spooky-hollow-danger-bigfoot-warnings-and-a-spider-man-sighting-susquehannock-trail-system-thru-hike-85-miles-may-26-30-2022/
The weather report for the weekend is mostly hot with temps in the mid-high 80s, lows of 60 overnight. I would expect some sections of the trail to be hiking through long grass, nettles and there are the ever present ticks. Water should be not a problem at this time of the year.

After reconnecting on the towpath for a short distance, we will connect to the Gold Mine loop trail in the forest and Gold Mine Overlook and return to our cars. There are a couple of short hills while in the forest but they are small, otherwise the route is mostly level.
There are a few small stream crossings on Ford Mine trail that are easily crossed. We may include the River Trail which runs along the shore of the Potomac, depending on the water level conditions.

Rock Creek Loop (8.1 miles, 817 ft elevation)
Let's enjoy a hike on this next-to-last Sunday of spring in DC's Rock Creek Park! This one’s for car-free DC folks, those who want a short morning drive with easy parking, and anyone who wants to explore one of the region's great urban parks.
This is a moderately challenging hike due to its length, though there is not much elevation gain. We’ll move at a steady 2–3 mph pace, with breaks as needed. Water and bathrooms are available at the start. Please bring 2 liters of water with you.
**Start location and time:**
We’ll meet at 9 am at Picnic Grove 24 across from Rock Creek Tennis Center [https://maps.app.goo.gl/wUMV6UqH7GKsDBbA8?g_st=ic](https://maps.app.goo.gl/wUMV6UqH7GKsDBbA8?g_st=ic)
We'll gather at covered picnic table shown in the image below. I'll have a large blue hiking backpack.
Note: We plan to start hiking promptly after our meeting time, but I'll allow a grace period of up to 10 minutes for late arrivals.
Route: [https://www.alltrails.com/explore/custom-routes/custom-route-ba011fd](https://www.alltrails.com/explore/custom-routes/custom-route-ba011fd)
**Transportation Options:**
Driving or rideshare (Lyft/Uber): Yes! the meeting point is easy to get to and parking is free and plentiful.
Buses: Indeed! Several buses go past this location on 16th Street. You can pick them up from Silver Spring metro (red line) or various metro stations in downtown DC. Please allow a little extra time if taking the bus, given variability in arrival times.
Bikeshares - Of course! There are stations close by.
CARPOOLING:
Although this is one of our rare public transportation-accessible hikes, we encourage those with cars driving in from outside DC to be willing to carpool - you're the ones who make LMH great!
If you're a driver that is willing to drive, please post a comment on the event page with the following information:
(1) Number of seats
(2) Meeting location
(3) Meeting time
As a rider, please comment on the driver's post to take a seat or post in the comments that you need a ride so a driver can find you. Riders are encouraged to help their driver out with the cost of gas.
We look forward to hiking with you!

Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/139400713-martyr
**A newly sober, orphaned son of Iranian immigrants, guided by the voices of artists, poets, and kings, embarks on a remarkable search for a family secret that leads him to a terminally ill painter living out her final days in the Brooklyn Museum. Electrifying, funny, and wholly original, *Martyr!* heralds the arrival of an essential new voice in contemporary fiction.**
Cyrus Shams is a young man grappling with an inheritance of violence and loss: his mother’s plane was shot down over the skies of the Persian Gulf in a senseless accident; and his father’s life in America was circumscribed by his work killing chickens at a factory farm in the Midwest. Cyrus is a drunk, an addict, and a poet, whose obsession with martyrs leads him to examine the mysteries of his past—toward an uncle who rode through Iranian battlefields dressed as the angel of death to inspire and comfort the dying, and toward his mother, through a painting discovered in a Brooklyn art gallery that suggests she may not have been who or what she seemed.
Kaveh Akbar’s *Martyr!* is a paean to how we spend our lives seeking meaning—in faith, art, ourselves, others.
Hidden Gem: Franciscan Monastery & Gardens
Even though this is posted as a meetup event, this is a self-guided experience, we wont be walking as a group.
Let's visit the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America, one of Washington's most beautiful and underrated landmarks.
We'll explore the monastery's stunning architecture, peaceful gardens, catacombs, grottos, and replicas of famous Holy Land sites. Often described as a hidden oasis in the city, this unique destination offers a fascinating blend of history, art, culture, and tranquility.
Whether you're interested in architecture, photography, spirituality, history, or simply discovering new places and meeting great people, you're welcome to join us.
**Cost:** Free
**Who can attend:** Everyone is welcome, regardless of faith background. Please dress respectfully, as this is an active religious site.
### What makes it unique?
* **A "Holy Land in America"** – It was created so Americans could experience replicas of important Christian sites in Jerusalem and the Holy Land without traveling overseas.
* **Underground catacombs** – Few places in DC have catacombs. Walking through them feels like stepping into another era.
* **Hidden gardens and grottos** – The 40+ acre grounds are filled with rose gardens, quiet pathways, fountains, and secluded prayer spaces. Many visitors are surprised such a peaceful retreat exists in the middle of the city.
* **Architectural variety** – The monastery combines elements inspired by churches and shrines from the Middle East, Europe, and early Christianity.
* **A living monastery** – Franciscan friars still live and worship there, so it is not just a museum or historic site.
### Why is it historically important?
* The Franciscans have been custodians of many Christian holy sites in the Holy Land for nearly 800 years.
* The monastery was founded in the late 1800s as the American headquarters supporting those missions.
* It helped make pilgrimage experiences accessible to people who could not afford the long journey to Jerusalem.
### Why do non-religious visitors enjoy it?
Even if you're not religious, the monastery offers:
* Beautiful architecture and art
* Excellent photography opportunities
* A fascinating glimpse into history and world cultures
* One of the quietest and most serene places in DC
* A chance to explore hidden tunnels, chapels, and gardens that most tourists never see
Many people visit expecting a church and leave feeling like they've discovered a secret European monastery tucked away in Washington. That's why it is often described as one of DC's most underrated attractions.
