Regular Wednesday Writing & Social (Newbies Welcome)
Get your kids book written!
This is an un-hosted meetup for anyone who wants to come and write for a couple of hours in the company of other kids writers. It's a great way to move your project forward in a lovely arty atmosphere.
The only rules are to say hello to other writers and leave them to work until 8:30 when you are free to have a chat. If you're by yourself, don't worry. You'll get two hours of writing closer to your goal. Enjoy and Write Write Write!
Shut Up & Write!® LONDON / PECKHAM
Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 18:00 on Wednesday afternoons/evenings.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.
SCHEDULE:
18:00 - Quick introductions
18:15 - Timer starts: write for 1 hour
19:15 - The End: chat, take off, or keep writing
OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 19:30. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled. If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.
Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you at the Peckham Pelican!
What Should I Bring?
Whatever you need to be able to write!
Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block the cafe’s overhead music or the occasional conversation by other patrons.
**Other Important Details:**
\- If you arrive and can't figure out who we are \(usually the table with a lot of laptops and notebooks\)\, feel free to ask the bar staff who will point you in the right direction\.
\- Many of our participants found the event through other means\, so please don't be put off by a low attendance number on MeetUp\!
\- The Pelican has some\, but not many\, charging points\, so make sure laptops are charged and perhaps bring a notebook just in case\.
\- The WiFi is also very poor \(non\-existent\)\, but most have found that to be a good thing\. Make sure to download or turn on 'offline mode' if working on a computer\.
\- Please thank our hosts by purchasing something \(The pizzas are fantastic\, and we write during happy hour \- two for one on cocktails\!\)
Shut Up & Write!® in Angel, Islington, London
**HIYA**
We’re a supportive community, and I’m here to organise this Meetup space. I’m enjoying seeing it growing and becoming a regular place for people to get-together. I also invite likemindeded people with shared interests from society. I hope this develops into a fully fledged, shared, literacy lounging experience - regardless of wether I’m here or not!
**INTRODUCTION**
Join us for some focused coworking writing or reading time. All experience levels are welcome and don’t worry, no one will see what you've written. This session is about getting your writing and reading done and meeting other literacy enthusiasts in the area.
**EARLY ARRIVALS** around 6:45pm
When you show up, find the Literacy Lounge area to the far right and settle in. Take some time to chat with your fellow writers before the start of the session if you like.
**START OF SESSION** around 7pm
I’ll set timers for our no-talking and focused writing sessions (write, break, write, end).
**END OF SESSION** around 8:30pm
Afterward, there’s time to hang out, and many people stay for over an hour. Perhaps to chat and get to know each other. Everyone tends to talk about their successes and challenges as writers/readers or similar interesting topics. If we don’t have time to stick around, no worries! We’re here every week anyway!!
**FORMAT**
A note about the format: We don’t host critiques or readings. These events are a safe space for writers andd readers of all skill levels and genres to work on their craft.
**VENUE**
This is a hybrid venue, with a restaurant, lounge, and outdoors seating. The seating has been strategically placed for inclusive social gatherings and for welcoming guests (please keep them positioned). It has an extensive menu of breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, deserts, hot and cold beverages and alcohol - for you to purchase and enjoy during your stay. A waiter/waitress will come over to take our orders.
**LOCATION & TRAVEL**
Megan's is located within a commercial and residencial complex, with four portals to arrive and leave - two are located on Upper Street opposite St Mary's Church Yard, the other two are around the sides. This venue is just a few minuets walk from the nearest bus stop, and about 10 minutes walk from the main tube and train stations, which is located in between Angel, Highbury and Islington.
**PARKING YOUR CAR**
You can pay to park your car upto 6:30pm, although it’s free parking afterwards Monday-Friday: located on adjacent roads (make sure you read the signs for parking guidelines).
**INTERNET USAGE**
For the WiFi name/password: a Megan’s sign-in link will appear on your computer’s browser.
**ABOUT ME**
I create from lived experience—woven with threads of self-care, healing, and the quiet power of connection through talk, touch, and silence. I’m here to hold space and greet each soul who enters, though I may not be able to linger with everyone. Still, know you’re warmly welcomed.
See you soon!
With compliments,
Sara x

**Saturday 24 Jan 2026 \| 11:00 – 17:00**
You’re warmly invited to join us for a **full-day creative writing workshop**
with food & drink, literary handouts, and a little fun thrown in for good measure.
***
### **Self & Society**
A day exploring how **inner lives meet outer worlds** —
how we’re shaped by the places, cultures, and systems we move through,
and how writing helps us notice, question, and respond.
This isn’t just about poetry (though poetry is welcome).
We’ll work with **prose, memoir, philosophy, fragments, and hybrid forms**,
reading widely, writing freely, and following curiosity wherever it leads.
By the end of the day, you’ll leave with:
* New writing
* Ideas sparked
* Drafts begun
* Plenty to keep working with long after the workshop ends
***
### **What do we mean by Self & Society?**
We’re interested in writing that asks questions like:
* What does it mean to live a life from the inside, in a shared world?
* How do private thoughts and public realities shape one another?
* Where do personal experience and wider culture meet?
* How can writing help us see — and speak — more clearly?
We’ll read short extracts from poets, essayists, philosophers, and storytellers, then experiment with their approaches through guided writing exercises.
No dogma. No right answers.
Just enquiry, attention, and honest language.
***
### **The plan**
* Start the day with tea or coffee and a gentle warm-up writing session
* Break for brunch at The Reliance Pub
* Settle into reading, conversation, supported exploration, and more writing
* Wind down with a late afternoon / early evening drink
* Finish with a mini pub quiz, purely for fun
***
### **What’s included**
* Full day of creative writing workshops & exercises
* Tea or coffee to start
* Reliance Pub brunch platter
* Late-afternoon / early-evening drink
* Thoughtful literary handouts
* **FREE Penguin Mini Classic** for every participant
***
### **What to bring**
* Yourself
* Pen & notebook — or a laptop if you prefer
***
### **Our style**
* Friendly, supportive, inclusive
* Everybody welcome — no experience necessary
* No pressure to share or perform
* Take part quietly, actively, or anywhere in between
If you have any doubts or questions, text me on **+44 (0) 7534 981 636**
Warm wishes,
**Sean**
*A Write & a Pint*
First Draft FINISHED. Now What...?
**Congratulations! You've finished a first draft! It might have taken months - or years even - to complete, and now revising it begins \*face palm\***
In this masterclass session, aimed at all new writers, we'll interrogate first drafts, define the makings of a second draft and learn the established paths of rewriting towards it. By learning to redraft through the lens of character, structure, conflict, voice, storytelling and more, you'll find a path that best suits you to produce the next draft. There are many ways forward. Learning to rewrite effectively is a prized skill within its own right. This will be a very practical workshops with writing exercises, examples and plenty of group discussion. You are not alone in your worry over rewriting. Not at all.
Incidentally, most full-length novels are redrafted from start to finish at least four times before they're ready for agents or publishers, but every single novel and its writer are different and there is no hard and fast rule. It's a fact that every first draft will need revising before it is submitted to any competition, agent or publisher.
Rewriting from first draft to second can be the most challenging for some writers who find reworking the hardest. So many novels languish as a first draft because beyond the organic, creative, freewheeling writing process comes the editing, refining and redrafting hell which many writers find too daunting. Fear not! Come to this workshop and learn what comes after you write **'the end'** for the first time.
After this session (I promise) you'll see your first draft more clearly; where it might need the most rewrites and how you might begin to tackle them. A first draft can feel like chaos distilled but that's okay. We'll make sense of it together. Join me and 10-15 other writers as we go through it.
**Date & Timing:** 2:30pm to 5:30pm with a quick break in the middle. Doors open at 2:20pm. Please aim to arrive on time as we'll start at 2:30pm. We'll adjourn to the main bar after the session for a few social drinks and conversation. No problem if you can't hang around.
PLEASE DON'T bring any of your own food to drinks to the pub. They'll have my head and we'll never be allowed back.
**Location:** The Artillery Arms, 102 Bunhill Row, London EC1Y 8ND. Closest stations are Old Street, Barbican and Moorgate. Please grab a drink at the bar (they have all the drinks + coffee/tea) and come to the room upstairs.
**Cost:** £15.00 to pay for venue hire, content, preparation and event organising. Please follow the steps to pay via PayPal when you RSVP. Refunds or credits will only be offered if the meetup is cancelled by admin. Please change your RSVP to 'Not Going' if you can no longer attend as we often have people waiting and we'd hate for them to miss out. Download the Meetup app to manage your RSVPs quickly.
Not sure this is for you? Any questions, please post a comment or DM the organiser.

You can just arrive, make yourself comfortable with anything you need, and get on with whatever you decide.

Or to switch off and talk about something else completely, if you need that instead!
