Highgate Highlights Walk 1: Historic Landmarks, Hidden Gems & Classic Pubs
Join us for the first in a series of walks exploring the rich history, architecture, and character of Highgate—featuring over 100 points of interest and a selection of its many historic pubs.
Starting from Archway Station, we’ll make our way up Highgate Hill, passing notable landmarks including the Whittington Stone and St Joseph’s Church. After a short detour via Hornsey Lane and Archway Bridge, we’ll arrive at Lauderdale House and the beautiful Waterlow Park.
Dating back to around 1580, Lauderdale House was once owned by Sir Sydney Waterlow, who generously gifted the house and its 29 acres of gardens to the public. We’ll take time to stroll through the park and enjoy its scenery.
Returning to Highgate Hill, we’ll encounter Cromwell House, a Grade I listed 17th-century building. Its remarkable oak staircase—adorned with carved Stuart-era military figures atop each newel post—is considered of national importance.
As we continue, we’ll pass a variety of elegant 17th- and 18th-century homes and learn about Highgate’s fascinating past—including its role as the site of Europe’s first cable-car system.
The walk also takes in traditional shopfronts and canopies, historic pubs, and the former police station and gaol. We’ll pause for refreshments at the Flask before continuing to explore more points of interest nearby.
We’ll then head down Southwood Lane, finishing the walk at the Woodman, conveniently located near Highgate tube station.
A detailed map and full list of points of interest can be found here:
[Visit Highgate | A visitor's guide](https://visithighgate.com/)
As this is a large and feature-rich area, Walk 1 will cover as much as we can, with future walks planned to explore additional highlights—and more pubs!

SOLD OUT • PILOT THOUGHT EXPERIMENT WRITING WORKSHOP: cultivate curiosity :-)
**This event is full! [Here's the next one](https://www.meetup.com/thought-experiments-in-pubs/events/314193821).**
A special event to share the creative practice of writing thought experiments.
**In a nutshell, writing thought experiments creates opportunities to:**
* investigate ideas (old and new)
* work your imagination
* write creatively and playfully
* produce compelling conversation starters that you can share with friends and strangers to provoke great discussions
Over the past 3 years, I've written over 200 thought experiments and learned a lot along the way. [Here's a bit more about why I enjoy the practice.](https://experimentsingroupwisdom.substack.com/p/writing-thought-experiments)
**In this workshop,** I'll share my process and together we'll create new thought experiments by:
* Identifying areas of interest
* Gathering ingredients for thought experiments
* Imagining scenarios
* Constructing narratives
* Generating relevant, thought provoking questions
* Participating in a round of small group discussions - you can volunteer your new thought experiment, or if you'd rather, you can pick one out of the hat.
**By the end of the evening** **we'll have**
* had some thought provoking conversations
* become familiar with a new method for creative thinking
* written our own original material for future group discussions :-)
Although we’ll be learning a new technique we'll also be aiming to have **an enjoyable evening, with good humour and fun**. This will be less like school and more like a fun TEiP night out with an additional creative twist.
**Who should come:**
Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts, it is about thinking creatively together and learning new ways to develop and communicate ideas.
**Tickets**
Space is limited to 15-20 people and tickets are £15.
I'd like to make this event accessible, so if cost is a barrier, please send me a DM.
**Where we'll meet:**
The Fitzroy Tavern in Fitzrovia. The nearest Tube stations are Goodge Street and Tottenham Court Road. We'll be upstairs in the Private Dining Room.
Looking forward to meeting & talking with you!

Capital Ring Part 13 - Stoke Newington to Hackney Wick
We will be walking section 13 out of 15 of the Capital Ring walk. Starting from Stoke Newington station, we will walk through Springfield park and alongside the river Lea, before finishing at Hackney Wick train station. This section of the capital ring is one of the shorter sections and fairly level, we will be walking for approximately one and three quarter hours with a break in between. It can get muddy so bring suitable footwear and clothing if it looks like rain or has been raining.
I'll keep a watch on the forecast and will cancel the event a day or two before if the weather is looking bad, so keep an eye on the event chat which I'll update a day or two before to confirm we are going ahead.
We will meet just outside Stoke Newington station at 10:45. Unless there is a transport issue affecting everyone, we will aim to start off on the walk at 11am. I will add my location tracking on Glympse so if you are late, we will not wait but you will be able to catch us up.
After the walk at Hackney Wick I am planning on heading to a local pub, the Lord Napier Star, for a drink and a bite to eat. The last time I came here they did a good Sunday Roast, if you are up for coming along please indicate in the comments. I'm estimating we would reach the end of the walk at Hackney Wick for about 12:30pm.
WALK 8km - River Lea + Springfield Park + Finsbury Park
Let's spend a relaxed afternoon, starting at Finsbury Park, jumping into Springfield Park, followed by a walk by River Lea. We will end our walk at Hackney Wick, where we will wrap our day.
* **Meeting point:** We'll meet inside Finsbury Park's south east entrance near Park View Cafe (specific location here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/YpuVoqnDuU38DhHS6), which is 1 min away from Manor House's tube/bus station.
* **When:** We will meet at 2:00 PM and will depart at 2:15 PM.
* **Planned route:** https://ibb.co/k2WGQKZm
* **Distance:** 5 miles / 8 km (about 2 hours)
* **Elevation gain:** 10m (elevation chart: https://ibb.co/pBrxb0PF )
Why £1? Symbolic fee to incentivize commitment and engagement between us all, which makes for an overall better experience; and helps offset meetup's organizer cost.

A very picturesque route from Burgess Hill via Ditchling Beacon to Brighton.
Ditchling Beacon commands a place as the third highest point on the South Downs at 814ft (American designations define a mountain as 1000ft!, getting close) with panoramic views, because of its defensive position it was also the site of an early Iron Age Hill fort.
The hike has a nice mixture of fields, ridge sections, hillforts as well as some urban sections into Brighton.
We pass Brighton station on the way to the seaside and at Brighton you have the option of seeing the seaside, shopping or having a social drink and maybe having a swim!
THIS IS A SUBSTANTIAL BUT MEDIUM LENGTH HIKE HIKE WITH A NUMBER OF GRADIENTS.
