Time To Abolish The House of Lords? - Whitechapel Debates
Time To Abolish The House of Lords? - Whitechapel Debates
**This House Would Abolish The House of Lords** **Why Are We Having This Debate?** The House of Lords has been a source of debate here in the UK for many years. With the country split between those who view lords as a pool of technical experts, business leaders and ultimate check / review for an elected government and those who view it as a wholly unelected, undemocratic problem that needs to abolished to create true democratic representation in the UK. Currently The Hereditary Peers bill is going through which aims to remove the last 92 hereditary peers and over 1000 years of British political tradition. BUT is tradition something to be held on to or should we be constantly looking for new ways to work in a modern world. **So we ask** \- Is it time we abolished the House of Lords? **Articles** **[What is the House of Lords & How Does it Work - BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-63864428 "https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-63864428")** **[The End of Herditary Peers - The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/mar/13/so-long-hereditary-peers-house-of-lords-anachronisms "https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/mar/13/so-long-hereditary-peers-house-of-lords-anachronisms")** **[Electing a Modern Second Chamber - Electoral Reform Sociaety](https://electoral-reform.org.uk/campaigns/elected-house-of-lords/ "https://electoral-reform.org.uk/campaigns/elected-house-of-lords/")** **Come Along and Have Your Vote!** **What We Do** 3v3 panel debate where our members explore the strongest arguments for a given topic. A debate should tell the audience what they need to know and not just what the speakers think. If you feel the same way, then we want to meet you. Debate London is the year-round series of free public debates held weekly at venues across the capital. The series is run by Debate London, a social enterprise that helps its members to advance their personal and professional development by teaching them how to debate. All of our speakers are [Debate London members](https://www.debate.london/plans "https://www.debate.london/plans") who have agreed to defend a particular perspective the audience need to hear, rather than just share their own personal opinion. After presenting the point of view assigned to them, the audience are then given the floor to cross-examine them and share their own position. The only time we hear what the speakers really think is at the end of the debate when they tell us where they really stand and whether this changed at all while learning how to defend the perspective assigned to them. **After Debate Social** After all of our debates we have a post debate hang-out. This is a chance for our community to get to know new people, explore new ideas and generally have more fun as a club! Come along and join us for a post-debate social! **Venue** Our venues serve drinks (alcoholic and soft drinks) as well as brilliant food. All can be ordered from the bar **Do not bring external food or drink into our venues you will be asked to throw it away or to finish it outside. - This is a venue rule which we need to follow.**

Let's Discuss... Normlessness!
Let's Discuss... Normlessness!
Within the last century, society and technology have changed rapidly. We have built tools to expand our reach, to build connections face to face and virtually, as well as tools to destroy each other. Technology is being built to engage needs we don't fully understand, often before the consequences of doing so are known. Examples could be the making and consumption of social media and pornographic content, or the rapid development of AI tools and companion at the detriment of work and social wellbeing. Who benefits when you don't know what normal looks like? If everyone does whatever feels right, is that freedom or just chaos with good PR? If you get to choose your own values, are you really choosing, or just rationalising what you already wanted? Is the real problem the speed of change, or that we never had great norms to begin with? As family, religion, and work weaken as institutions, what fills the normative vacuum, and is it enough? You may like this short video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICRECGVsaRo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICRECGVsaRo) \*Please do your own research and share resources related to this topic in the comment section\* #======# Donation! Thank you for being a member. I have made a donation page for those who want to help with the costs. The format of this event will be: 13:15 - Free flow group discussion about the topic. 14:00 ish - We will be splitting into smaller groups for more engaging discussion about what interests each of you. 16:00 - End of the official meetup. Most often attendees stay and continue discussing up to around 18:00. #======# Please RSVP if you can commit to attending and change your RSVP if something comes up. Inaccurate RSVPs can keep potential attendees on the waiting list and makes it difficult to plan for room sizes and bookings. Meetup #15 Claude Code For The Rest Of Us
Meetup #15 Claude Code For The Rest Of Us
Shaping our future with AI. Creating opportunity through AI fluency, connection and community. No jargon. No hype. No confusing terminology. **Join us for our next in-person meetup in London on Wednesday April 22nd.** Our theme for this meetup is **Claude Code For The Rest Of Us.** How do you get those most from tools like Claude Code if you're not a developer? We are talking to knowledge workers, product leaders, consultants and entrepreneurs about how they use Claude Code! **Where and When?** * Wednesday, April 22nd * Doors open at 18:00 * Talks start at 19:00 * 123, Pentonville Rd, London N1 9LG **Talk: I Built A Team Of AI Agents. Here's What They Actually Do** ([Liam Darmody](https://www.linkedin.com/in/liamdarmody/), With Curious Growth) AI agents are revolutionising how we work, but the conversation is too often dominated by software development and coding. What about the rest of us? I'm a product leader who spent a decade managing human teams before building a team of AI agents to run alongside me. In this hands-on, demo-heavy session, I'll take you behind the scenes to show you how I built and manage a custom team of AI agents that handle briefing, research, writing, and meeting analysis. I give one agent a task, it pulls in the right context, and passes the work to whichever specialist agent is best suited. This isn't a theoretical talk or a product pitch. It's a practical walkthrough of what works, what doesn't, and what I've learned about designing AI agents that actually do useful work. Whether you're a founder, a strategist, or a knowledge worker looking to scale your output, you'll leave with actionable ideas on how to treat AI not as a single tool, but as a capable team working alongside you. **About Liam:** I help senior product and engineering leaders fix the real reason teams fail. Misalignment. Through executive coaching, product advisory and strategic facilitation, I support leaders to rebuild clarity, alignment and momentum so their teams perform at their best without burning out. **Panel: Getting Started With Claude Code** This is a real "for the rest of us" event. In this panel we'll be digging into the ways ANYONE can get to grips with tools like Claude Code. Liam will be joined by Maebh Booth and Miguel Luna who have been using Claude Code outside of software development to help them save time and make better decisions. **About Maebh:** Maebh Booth is a senior engineering leader focused on platform, developer experience, and the practical realities of AI across the full development lifecycle, currently working independently to help engineering organisations adopt it in a way that actually delivers value. Maebh doesn’t just use AI at work she’s also created a team of agents to help organise her life, as well as fun projects like a cocktail making app and a geneology research web app. **About Miguel:** Miguel is a Product Leader focused on Cloud Native observability, systems thinking, and practical use of AI with search context. Miguel has recently been rethinking the product role completely to get the most from LLMs including tools for cohort retention and funnel analyses, customer health signals, churn prediction, writing PRDs and one-pagers. **Thanks!** We'd like to thank our sponsors Leapter and AutogenAI for making this event possible. Also a massive shoutout to Matt Saunders who is stepping in as MC this month! **Code of Conduct** This event has a code of conduct that you can [review here.](https://aifortherestofus.live/code-of-conduct) By joining the community and registering for this event you agree to abide by our code of conduct. **Providing Your Name and Email** To register for this event you'll be asked to provide your email address. AI is changing how art is made. But when does it stop being your work and start being the machine’s?
