AWS Meetup Vienna #51 - hosted by Eversports
AWS Meetup Vienna #51 - hosted by Eversports
Summer is arriving in Vienna - and so is our next AWS meetup! ☀️ For our June edition, we’re going back to building: serverless architectures, modern cloud workflows, and a touch of AI to explore how these worlds increasingly connect in real projects. A big thank you to **Eversports** for supporting the community and making the meetup possible! 🙌 *** 📍 **Location** Eversport GmbH Jakov-Lind-Straße 13 H/5. OG, 1020 Wien 🕒 **When** **June 2nd 2026** Doors open at 17:00 for networking, food & drinks. Talks start at 18:00. *** 🗓️ **Agenda** * **17:00 - 18:00:** Entry & Networking * **18:00 - 18:05:** Welcome and Introduction AWS Community Vienna * **18:05 - 18:10:** Welcome and Introduction to the sponsors (**Eversports**) * **18:10 - 18:50:** **"How RBI is automating its cloud foundation with AWS Step Functions"** * **18:50 - 19:20:** Networking break * **19:20 - 20:00:** **"Building Conversational Agents in Code with AWS Lambda Durable Functions"** * **20:00 – Open End:** Networking **"Building Conversational Agents in Code with AWS Lambda Durable Functions"** *Speaker:* **[Gunnar Grosch](https://www.linkedin.com/in/gunnargrosch/)**\, Developer Advocate at Sinch \| ex\-AWS \| AWS Serverless Hero *About the talk:* Building agentic AI workflows typically requires Step Functions or complex database state machines to handle human delays. AWS Lambda Durable Functions change that. You write sequential code in a single Lambda function that can suspend for days and resume instantly, and you only pay for active compute time. In this session, we will orchestrate Amazon Bedrock conversational agents using the Sinch Conversation API to handle inbound interactions. You will learn how to dispatch AI specialists, use simple callbacks to wait for asynchronous human input, and replace heavy infrastructure boilerplate with native durable execution. **"How RBI is automating its cloud foundation with AWS Step Functions"** *Speaker:* **[Roman Jokel](https://www.linkedin.com/in/roman-jokel/),** Cloud Architect (Raiffeisen Informatik) **/ [Florian Ettinger](https://www.linkedin.com/in/florian-ettinger/),** Solution Architect (AWS) *About the talk:* How can AWS Step Functions transform daily cloud operations? Join us to explore how RBI is using workflow orchestration to automate its cloud foundation. We’ll share practical insights from our Cloud Center of Excellence, demonstrating how Step Functions power landing zone operations, simplify automation, speed up deployments and enable scalable cloud governance across the organization. *** 💛 **Sponsors:** * **Eversports** - [eversports.at](https://www.eversports.at/) *** 📌 **RSVP now** and invite your colleagues to celebrate, learn, and connect with the AWS community! "Direct-Style Concurrency & Resiliency" + "Deterministic, AI-driven dev-flows"
"Direct-Style Concurrency & Resiliency" + "Deterministic, AI-driven dev-flows"
Agenda (preliminary) 18:00 doors open 18:20 welcome 18:30 **A Tour of Ox 1.0: Direct-Style Concurrency and Resiliency** 19:30 break 20:00 **Maybe(!): "Orca: Deterministic, AI-driven development flows"** 20:00 **Maybe(!): "Sandcat: Docker & dev container setup for securely running AI agents"** 21:00 Networking **A Tour of Ox 1.0: Direct-Style Concurrency and Resiliency** Ox provides a toolkit for safe concurrency and resiliency for Scala on the JVM. After two years of prototyping, we’re delighted to showcase the final product. With Ox, you can build and deliver direct-style Scala applications today. In the code-first presentation, we’ll begin with concurrency (including lower-level structured concurrency scopes and higher-level concurrency operators). Next, we’ll proceed to Ox’s approach to error management and type safety in that area. We’ll then explore Ox’s direct-but-reactive streaming library before concluding with its built-in resiliency toolkit. Software is never finished, so we’ll also share what lies ahead for Ox specifically and our plans for direct-style Scala generally. **About Adam Warski** Adam Warski is the co-founder of SoftwareMill and head of R&D at VirtusLab, where he primarily generates code using Java, Scala, Rust and other interesting technologies. He is actively involved in open-source projects, such as Ox, Jox, Tapir, sttp, and others. He has also been a speaker at major conferences, including JavaOne, Devoxx, GeeCON and ScalaDays. In addition to writing closed- and open-source software, he spends his free time exploring various programming-related subjects. Any ideas or insights he gains usually end up on his blog ([https://warski.org/articles](https://warski.org/articles)). **Maybe(!): "Orca: Deterministic, AI-driven development flows"** Orca Flow scripts orchestrate coding agents. No need to try to convince the LLM that reviewing code until all review comments are fixed is a good idea - the script will ensure that's the way it will be done. No need to spend tokens on calling a code formatter, switch branches or creating PRs. Orca Flow scripts are written in Scala, and executable using scala-cli. That's the only component you'll need to install - everything else will be downloaded on-the-fly. Orca Flow scripts read like Python, but are type-safe, so you can know that your script will execute just fine. Orca works with Claude & Codex (now), but the plans are much wider than that! **Maybe(1): "Sandcat: a Docker & dev container setup for securely running AI agents** Sandcat is a Docker & [dev container](https://containers.dev) setup for securely running AI agents. The environment is sandboxed, with controlled network access and transparent secret substitution. All of this is done while retaining the convenience of working in an IDE like VS Code. All container traffic is routed through a transparent [mitmproxy](https://mitmproxy.org/) via WireGuard, capturing HTTP/S, DNS, and all other TCP/UDP traffic without per-tool proxy configuration. A straightforward allow/deny list-based engine controls which network requests go through, and a secret substitution system injects credentials at the proxy level so the container never sees real values.

Comedy Factory – English Open Mic @TheComedyPub
Comedy Factory – English Open Mic @TheComedyPub
**Comedy Factory: Vienna’s wild & international English Open Mic. Fresh jokes, new comedians & free entry every Saturday.** ## [GET YOUR TICKETS HERE!!!](https://www.universe.com/events/comedy-factory-english-open-mic-thecomedypub-tickets-46HDTR?ref=MeetUp) 🔥 Saturday nights start with laughter! Welcome to **Comedy Factory**, Vienna’s most international and experimental English Stand-up Comedy Open Mic. Every Saturday at 18:30, The Comedy Pub transforms into a comedy playground where fresh jokes are built, tested, and unleashed. ## Event Description: At **Comedy Factory**, anything can happen. New comedians step on stage for the very first time, while experienced performers bring their sharpest jokes and wildest new ideas. The result? A raw, unpredictable, and unforgettable night of comedy. With **10–12 comedians each week**, you’ll see a mix of bold experiments, risky punchlines, and polished sets. No two shows are ever the same – every Saturday offers a brand-new lineup of voices from Vienna’s thriving international comedy scene. This show is perfect if you’re: * an **Expat or international living in Vienna** looking for English comedy * a **local curious about stand-up culture** from around the world * a **tourist wanting a unique night out** in Vienna * or simply someone who loves to laugh at fresh, unfiltered comedy. ## 🤔 What is an Open Mic? An Open Mic is where comedy is born. Comedians test their newest material, experiment with wild ideas, and interact with the audience in real time. Sometimes the jokes kill, sometimes they bomb – but that’s exactly the fun. As an audience member, you get to witness comedy in its rawest form, up close and personal. ## 🍻 The Comedy Pub – Vienna’s Home of Stand-up The show takes place in **The Comedy Pub** (Kettenbrückengasse 7, 1050 Vienna). Unlike our underground cellar shows, **Comedy Factory happens upstairs in the main pub area** – bright, welcoming, international, and buzzing with energy. Grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy the only dedicated stand-up comedy club in Vienna. Centrally located right by **U4 Kettenbrückengasse station**, it’s the perfect meeting point before heading out into your Saturday night. ## 💡 Free Entry – Donations Welcome Comedy should be for everyone. That’s why entry is free! But if you had a great time (and you will 😉), we invite you to drop a donation in the bucket at the end of the show. It’s the best way to support the comedians who made you laugh. ## 🎟️ Audience Rules To keep the show fun and fair for everyone, we ask for a few simple things: * Be on time – comedy waits for no one. * Respect the stage – no talking during sets. * Laugh loud, clap hard – comedians feed off your energy. * No heckling – it never ends well. * Show love with a donation if you laughed. ## 🎉 Why Saturday? Because weekends deserve a big laugh. **Comedy Factory** is the perfect early-evening start to your Saturday – international, experimental, and guaranteed to surprise you. With a new lineup every week, it’s always fresh, always different, always funny. Start your night with us, then take the laughter out into Vienna. #ComedyFactoryVienna #EnglishComedyVienna #ViennaComedy #StandupVienna #ViennaNightlife #ViennaEvents #ComedyVienna #LiveComedyVienna #EnglishOpenMic #StandupComedyVienna #ViennaExpats #ExpatsInVienna #ComedyShowVienna #ViennaLaughs #FunnyInVienna #ComedyClubVienna #ViennaWeekend #SaturdayNightVienna #ViennaFun #ViennaThingsToDo #ComedyLifeVienna #ComedyCommunityVienna #ViennaTourists #InternationalComedy #WildComedyVienna #ExperimentalComedy #ViennaStage #ViennaCulture #ViennaNightOut #LaughsInVienna #ComedyHotspotVienna #ViennaStandupScene #ViennaLaughing #ComedyPubVienna #ViennaSaturday #ViennaLOL #ComedyAddictsVienna #ViennaGiggles #ComedyUndergroundVienna #ViennaHahaha

**Dr. ## Event Details 📅 **Datum:** 3\. Juni 2026 🕔 **Einlass:** ab 17:00 Uhr 🕕 **Start:** 18:00 Uhr 📍 **Location:** Boston Consulting Group Address: Postgasse 10, 1010 Wien Sprache: Deutsch 🎟 **Eintritt frei** ⚠️ Begrenzte Plätze – First Come, First Served. Discussion: "Where do you keep your mind?"
Discussion: "Where do you keep your mind?"
***"Where does the mind stop and the rest of the world begin?"*** *Does our mind stop at the skull, like the brain? Or does it extend outward into notebooks, post-its, gadgets, and perhaps even other people?* In this session of **Marginal Thoughts**, we will explore how far our minds extend. Before the - hopefully mind-expanding - discussion, we will engage with the “Extended Mind Thesis” through a short interview with one of its proponents and a short story that exemplifies the idea: * [Video interview with Andy Clark](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kc-TdMjuJRU), one of the proponents of the "Extended Mind" (\~13 min) * Short story by Jonathan Nolan: ["Memento Mori"](http://people.whitman.edu/~herbrawt/classes/110/Nolan.pdf) (\~25 min; alternatively available as an [audio version read by author](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqq2aSegXXI)) Here Clark suggests that destroying someone’s notes might amount to more than mere property damage, whereas Nolan’s protagonist uses notes precisely to commit more than mere property damage. **How to prepare** Watching the short interview and reading the story would be the minimal preparation. Some optional material is listed below. As you engage with the material, try to identify at least one point of curiosity, confusion, or uncertainty - these will be natural starting points for our discussion. **What to expect** This is an in-person, conversational meetup in English. The goal isn't to debate or lecture - it’s to explore ideas and leave with better questions than we arrived with. **Optional stuff for the extra curious** The interview with Andy Clark comes from a [longer video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSngHyD44OY) which also features David Chalmers, co-author of the [original paper](https://www.alice.id.tue.nl/references/clark-chalmers-1998.pdf) proposing the "Extended Mind Thesis". And given the topic of the session and the name of this Meetup group, it would be an omission not to mention the poem ["Marginalia"](https://allpoetry.com/Marginalia) by Billy Collins ([here](https://soundcloud.com/brainpicker/billy-collins-reads-marginalia) read by the author).

Franklin Park Conservatory / Columbus Brewing Company
Franklin Park Conservatory / Columbus Brewing Company
**History** The [Franklin Park Conservatory](https://www.fpconservatory.org/)’s roots trace back to 1852 when the Franklin County Agricultural Society purchased 88 acres of land to host the Ohio State Fair. After the fair moved to its permanent home, the city of Columbus transformed the grounds into Franklin Park in 1884. This transition shifted the space from a temporary event site to a dedicated public green space for the growing community. The park became a central hub for outdoor recreation and early civic gatherings in the neighborhood. In 1895, the landmark Victorian-style Palm House opened its doors, drawing heavy inspiration from the Glass Palace of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This iron and glass structure became an immediate icon, housing exotic plants that residents would otherwise never see in the Midwest. It remains the oldest part of the facility and serves as a primary link to the conservatory’s 19th-century origins. For decades, it stood as a singular testament to grand horticultural architecture in Central Ohio. A major turning point arrived in 1992 when Columbus hosted AmeriFlora '92, an international horticultural exhibition. This massive event prompted a $16 million renovation and expansion, adding significantly more greenhouse space and the Dorothy M. Davis Showhouse. The festival put the conservatory on the international map and fundamentally changed its scale and ambition. Following the event, the facility transitioned from a city-run park to a private, non-profit organization. In 2003, the conservatory’s identity was further defined through a long-term partnership with world-renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. After a successful exhibition, the Friends of the Conservatory purchased most of the glass installations, creating the largest permanent collection of Chihuly’s work in a botanical setting. These vibrant glass sculptures are now woven throughout the biomes, blending art with nature. This addition helped cement the conservatory as a premier cultural destination rather than just a botanical garden. Recent years have seen the site expand beyond the glass walls to emphasize community engagement and outdoor education. The 2018 opening of the Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation Children’s Garden added two acres of interactive landscape designed for hands-on learning. The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company Community Garden Campus also provides local residents with space to grow their own food and learn sustainable practices. Today, the conservatory balances its historic Victorian charm with modern commitments to local ecology and the Columbus community. **Maps of the Conservatory** Here is the [main map](https://www.fpconservatory.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/franklin-park-zones-scaled.jpg) of the Conservatory grounds. Here's a [map of the areas](https://www.fpconservatory.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/ConstructionMap-2026.jpg) in which the Conservatory has ongoing construction (see below). **Summary** For this event, we'll explore Columbus's highly-rated and very popular Conservatory. As mentioned above, the Conservatory is doing renovations on parts of the facility. These renovations are scheduled to be ongoing until the Fall of next year. Basically, no matter when you go to the Conservatory over the next 18 months, you're going to see some metaphorical orange barrels. So let's just go now. **Tickets and pricing** On the first Sunday of every month, the Conservatory is free for residents of Franklin County and the city of Columbus. You must bring an ID to receive this discount. (Yes, they do check.) Otherwise, tickets are $25.20. Members of the Columbus Zoo (of which I am one) do get a discount on tickets, though I have never actually bought a ticket to the Conservatory (I've always gone on free days). I believe the discount is $4. Parking is always free. If you have additional questions about pricing or whether and for what you qualify, you can reach the Conservatory at 614-715-8000. **Where we'll meet** We will meet just outside the main entrance. I guarantee there's going to be a line. The Conservatory is always popular on free days, and especially in nice weather. **Your GPS is stupid!** Be careful simply typing "Franklin Park Conservatory" in your GPS and going where it tells you. The only way to access the parking lot to the Conservatory is off of Broad Street. Unfortunately, since Google Maps is unable to find its way out of a wet paper bag, it has a tendency to want to take people to a mythical, non-existent Conservatory entrance on Nelson Road. If your GPS does this, just drive to the north side of the Conservatory along Broad Street. Your GPS should then redirect you to the main Conservatory entrance. If your GPS doesn't, then throw your phone away\* and look for the big Conservatory sign on the south side of Broad Street between Nelson Road and Franklin Park West. You also should be able to use the map pin I've provided, below, and it should properly direct you to where you need to drive. \* Don't really do this. **After the event** After stopping to smell the roses, for those that are interested, we'll head to the nearby [Columbus Brewing Company Beer Hall](https://columbusbrewing.com/location/beer-hall/) for [drinks](https://columbusbrewing.com/location/beer-hall/#draft-list) and [lunch](https://columbusbrewing.com/location/beer-hall/#food-menu). The Beer Hall's actual address is [200 Kelton Ave, Columbus, OH 43205](https://www.google.com/maps/place/200+Kelton+Ave,+Columbus,+OH+43205/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x883889a94ac4acad:0xadb2e60240dbc38b?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111) (it's literally just on the south side of the Conservatory). Be sure this is where your GPS is taking you when you use it, as the Brewing Company has a taproom on Harrison Avenue that is *not* what you want for this event. We should be at the Beer Hall by 1 if you can't make the Conservatory and just want to join us for drinks.

Bring your Raspberry Pi, Arduino, microcontroller, or any other electronic project and join fellow electronics makers for a night of creativity and collaboration! This session is open forum to share your current projects—whether complete or in progress, it’s all interesting! Whether you’re deep into embedded systems, exploring new ideas, or just getting started, you’ll find a welcoming space to collaborate, share, and get inspired. **New to electronics or curious about tinkering?** You’re absolutely welcome. If you’re a beginner and want to experiment, I’ll have a couple of starter kits available so you can try things out—whether that’s blinking your first LED, putting something on a display, or experimenting with simple sensors. No pressure and no experience required—just an interest in learning and building. While we continue to pursue a more permanent venue for this Meetup, we’ll be using public library facilities based on availability. This session will be at the Worthington Park Library in the Olentangy Meeting Room.
