Speltestavond #78
Speltestavond #78
🇬🇧 **For English-speaking guests:** Before a board game or card game can be published, it must undergo extensive testing to ensure that it is enjoyable, clear, and always functions properly. Therefore, **every 2 weeks**, we gather with game authors from the region to test prototypes of games, thereby improving them and, perhaps, getting them published someday. At 8 PM, we gather at [StartUp Nijmegen](https://startupnijmegen.nl/) for a game testing evening. Depending on the number of attendees and prototypes brought (feel free to bring something yourself), we form several groups. For smaller games, you can switch groups throughout the evening, but for larger games, you should discuss this. **Even if you** **do not design games** or have a game you want to test, you are, of course, very welcome. It is very beneficial for designers to receive feedback from as many people as possible. And to be honest: testing new games is just a lot of fun! We continue until about 11 PM, but feel free to go home earlier if you wish. There is **free coffee** **and tea** at StartUp Nijmegen. A small contribution is requested for soft drinks, beer, or wine. StartUp Nijmegen is located opposite the station. You can park your car in the adjacent Keizer Karel parking garage (50 cents per hour). There is also a secure bicycle parking facility here. The testing evenings in Nijmegen are every **2nd Tuesday** and **4th Wednesday** of the month. So be sure to mark those in your calendar (tip: automatically add them to your calendar with [this iCal link](https://calendar.google.com/calendar/ical/c_d2267afce516f9296468270649b3f44da6c06cbc0bc3de05f049992373db5f4f@group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics))! Dutch Data Security & Compliance Community Meetup #7

Join us for some focused writing time. All writers and all experience levels are welcome and don’t worry, no one will see what you've written. This session is about getting your writing done and meeting other writers in your area. When you show up, say hello to everyone, grab a drink, and get your writing tools ready. Once you’re all settled, take some time to chat with your fellow writers. Once everyone’s arrived, I will lead quick introductions and then set the timer for our quiet and focused writing session. 🏔️ Summit Hike – Everest Edition (8,848 m)
🏔️ Summit Hike – Everest Edition (8,848 m)
🏔️ Everest Update for the Veluwe Power Hikers We were preparing for a classic VPH high altitude expedition on top of the world. Unfortunately there is some disappointing news. Starting in 2026, Nepal is introducing strict new regulations for climbing Mount Everest. Climbers will now need to have previously summited a 7,000 meter peak in Nepal and must also submit mandatory health certificates. Because we cannot realistically summit a 7,000 meter peak and then climb Everest on the same day during our hike, I am unfortunately obliged to change the program. There is also another small complication. 1 April falls on a Wednesday, which makes organizing the expedition a bit difficult. After a poll in the WhatsApp group, we decided to move the date to **28 March** and climb the highest point of the Veluwe, **Signaal Imbosch (110 m)**. Even if it’s not Everest, don’t underestimate this hike: we will cover **22 km with about 350 metres of elevation gain** at a brisk pace. At this altitude, however, oxygen bottles are no longer recommended. Please update your RSVP if you can no longer attend due to the change. ⛰️🥾 **When and Where to Meet?** 10:10 sharp at Rheden Trainstation. ⏰ Please arrive on time, as we won’t be able to wait for latecomers. 🥾✨ https://maps.app.goo.gl/VaEtswyBps5awMoL7 **Where and When Shall We Rest?** We’ll take 2 breaks: * Lunch break in nature at Signaal Imbosch (110 m) with group photo on summit; 20 min * Snack and drink at Basecamp (80 m) where you can buy drinks and snacks; 30 min **Notifications:** * Technical equipment: avalanche transceiver (beacon), avalanche probe, and avalanche shovel (if you have them) * A compact lunch and water to share at the summit * The hike will only be canceled in case of severe avalanche risk (code 5). * If you plan to bring a companion, please ensure that they are also registered for the hike. * To be the first to get updates on new hikes, join our WhatsApp group! Feel free to ask for the QR code during the hike to easily join. * T-shirts are now available for €25, made from Fairwear-certified organic cotton with eco-friendly inks—sustainable, odor-resistant, and perfect for your hiking adventures (limited stock, available during the hike)! Let me know your size and I will bring one for you!

And as always our friends at **[Silicon Brighton](https://siliconbrighton.com/)**, whose mission is to put Brighton on the map as a technology hub, spotlighting the region for talent and investment. **————————** **Our speakers:** **————————** **Steve Down** **Steve Down is a Senior Product Manager at Channel 4, specialising in building high performing streaming apps for the biggest screen in the home.** He’s spent years shaping TV experiences at major UK broadcasters, tackling platform fragmentation, performance constraints and all the quirks that make doing product on TV Apps a whole world of its own. He regularly writes and speaks about the realities of Connected TV product development, sharing lessons from building and scaling TV apps across diverse platforms and fast changing user behaviours. His industry contributions unpack everything from platform limitations and UX challenges to experimentation gaps and the future of big screen viewing. **————————** **About the Talk:** **————————** **Behind the Streams: The untold story of TV App Product Management** Forget what you know about doing Product Management on web and mobile - TV is a whole different ball game. You’re juggling dozens of platforms & stakeholders, designing for a lean-back user experience, and working in an environment where optimal performance is everything. Add in the giants like Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube as competitors, and standing out gets tough. **In this session, Steve will pull back the curtain on:** \- What makes TV product management so different \- The skills you need to succeed in streaming \- How you can break into one of the most exciting areas in product today If you’ve ever thought about working in streaming or just want to know what happens behind the biggest screen in the house, this talk is for you. **Raff Di Meo** Senior Product Design Manager at Optimizely. Raff has spent over 10 years designing products across startups, agencies, and enterprise SaaS, including a startup acquisition. Today, he's a Senior Product Design Manager at Optimizely, where he leads a team of designers reshaping how marketing teams create content across the web. He's an active speaker in the UX community and writes Some Designers on Substack, championing inclusivity and supporting designers through a profession that won't sit still. **————————** **About the Talk:** **————————** **When too easy to use becomes a problem: from e-commerce returns to AI in design** A few years ago, Raff designed a returns flow for an e-commerce product. It was fast, frictionless, and users loved it. It also helped normalise a behaviour that cost businesses millions and generated thousands of tonnes of waste. By every metric tracked, it was a success. By every metric not tracked, it was a disaster. Today, the same pattern is playing out. Not just in the products we design, but in how we design them. Teams are reshaping their entire process around AI tools that can't even retain their own users. We're told the old ways are dead. Move faster. Ship more. Trust the tools. In this talk, Raff will share what the returns project taught him about the gap between a successful design and a responsible one, and how those lessons are shaping how his team is navigating AI right now: what they're using, what's genuinely working, and what they're deliberately protecting. You'll leave with three things you can take back to your team: why understanding the problem still comes first, how to explore with AI without losing your craft, and a dead-simple habit for catching unintended consequences before they ship. **——————————** **About your hosts:** **——————————** Product Unleashed is brought to you by your hosts **[John Griffin](https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-griffin-designer/)** and **[Dominic Port](https://www.linkedin.com/in/dominic-port/)**. The duo have worked on the design of products of all shapes and sizes and bring their energy and enthusiasm to this unique meetup, packed with great guests and knowledge - for anyone interested in levelling up their game in the world of products.

Delicious recipes** Koog is an open-source Kotlin framework for building robust, and production-ready AI agents. Developed, and battle-tested in their own products by JetBrains! In this session we’ll build an agent, and explore various techniques to tackle different kinds of problems, and complexity. How we can use model-context protocol (MCP) to give our agent access to external tools, and how to build custom tools to integrate with your own systems. How to define flexible graph workflows to design complex agent behaviors. If you're not cooking your own AI Agents yet, you should! Join me and I’ll give you a taste of Koog. **About** **Simon Vergauwen** **Developer Advocate at JetBrains & OSS (arrow-kt) Maintainer** **Software engineer from Antwerp, Belgium.** Interested in everything functional, and Kotlin. Loves OSS, cooking, snowboarding and Fallou **Domain-Driven Design** What name should I give this entity? How should I deal with ambiguous terminology? Where should business rules be implemented? Is this validation part of the domain logic, or does it belong to the application layer? Which entities should be within the scope of this database transaction? In this talk we explore how the **Domain-Driven Design (DDD)** methodology helps answer questions like these. We will cover the key DDD concepts, including **Ubiquitous Language**, **Bounded Context**, **Aggregates**, **Entities**, and **Value Objects**, and discuss how they fit within a software architecture. The session is built around a practical example, so you will not only learn the theory behind DDD, but also see how these concepts can be applied in real-world software development. **About Dirk Groot** I'm a software engineer with more than 25 years of experience. Since my early teens, sofware engineering has been my greatest passion.

Using Philosophy to Cope with Current Events
Using Philosophy to Cope with Current Events
So this month's prompt is more general. I think we can all agree that we are living in "unique" times that require coping skills. I think that one role and/or purpose of philosophy is to help us deal with our daily lives and our "unique" times. So, let's share our feelings and thoughts about which philosopher/philosophy we turn to in order to deal with our crazy events. Who/what helps you stay focused in your daily life and helps you sleep at night. I find that Stoicism with a little philosophical pessimism mixed in goes a long way in helping me deal with what I see as very destructive, fearful and mean spirited public policies at both the state and federal levels. Hope to see you on March 28th!

From Web Forms to Web Components - Burton Smith
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you. The building address is 4450 Bridge Park The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400 **Abstract** Web Forms gave .NET developers a powerful abstraction for building reusable UI controls long before design systems were a thing. Web Components finally bring that same idea to the browser natively. This session explores how the Web Forms mindset translates into Custom Elements, Shadow DOM, and HTML templates. We’ll examine how Web Components enable design systems that work across frameworks, how they differ from server‑driven controls, and why they’re becoming a foundational layer for modern UI. Whether you’re maintaining legacy apps or building greenfield projects, you’ll leave with a practical understanding of how to apply familiar patterns in a modern, standards‑based way. **YouTube Link** TBA

This 1967 film is widely regarded as one of the best American movies ever made. Now remembered almost as much for its Simon and Garfunkel music as its deadpan comedy and being the role that established Dustin Hoffman as the hottest actor in Hollywood. It became a cultural icon for capturing the spirit of 60s angst of a young man on the make, while garnering a batch of Oscar nominations. After watching the movie on your own, join us to relive (or experience!) those feelings at our discussion.

SCHEDULE: 10:00 - SESSION 1: quick intros. 10:10 - timer starts: write for 1 hour. 11:10 - chat / take off / keep writing. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 11A-11:30ish. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. (I’ll be the person with the Shut Up & Write! sign.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer. Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you! • What to bring Whatever you need to be able to write! Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block noise or the occasional conversation by other patrons. Electrical outlets are limited, so charge your devices before whenever possible. See you at The Café on Saturday!
Let's try a Friday Night Fish Fry!
Let's try a Friday Night Fish Fry!
We thought of one of the interesting things that can be enjoyed at this time of the year. We will be meeting at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for a "Fish Fry" in Marian Hall on Friday, March 27th at 5:00 PM. It might be fun for you to experience what has become a tradition on the Fridays before Easter. They will have fried fish or baked fish, French fries and Cole slaw, as well as beverages, all for $16.00 for adults. They will have other beverages and desserts available for sale, as well. We have never tried this, and sometimes there are quite a few people at these events so we hope that we will be able to find each other easily. I'll try to have signs outside Marian Hall that Identify our group. We hope to have you join us!
