WOODWORK – SET OF STEPS
**Bookable via our website ➡️** https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/woodwork-set-of-steps-8/
⋆⋆⋆
This timeless classic is taken from our favourite 1910 vintage woodwork book. It is a brand new project for our Carpentry for Beginners courses.
Take home a fabulously useful set of steps, beautifully crafted with ‘Through tenons’ and ‘shoulder’ joints. Measurements are: 53cm H x 50cm W and 55cm D when open.
Using a mixture of traditional hand tools and modern drills and saws, experienced craftsman Len Conway will guide and inspire you as he teaches age-old techniques in carpentry. As you begin learning how to make traditional wood joints in seasoned redwood, you will learn how to use and care for chisels, saws, planes and marking gauges. Len is an experienced carpenter and teacher. He conveys his skilful practical experience with light-hearted humour.
Learners will work on a variety of exercises – designed to incorporate simple to advanced joints and tools that build confidence and independence.
Over 5 specified days, we will cover many aspects of traditional carpentry tuition. There will be lots of practical exercises in each session while making a small set of steps that you will take home.
**We will get familiar with some tools of the trade:**
* Introducing basic tools. Equipping a toolbox for home carpentry.
* Timber selection/marking out and cutting. Cutting accurately with a hand saw
* Using a plane, different types of planes. Sharpening tips and practice.
* Using a chisel and its uses. Sharpening tips and practice.
**You will use planes, chisels and marking tools:**
* Simple joints and why we use them.
* Half joints, lap joints. Practice using chisels and planes.
* Bridle joints and a mortise and tenon
**You will make a simple project to take home:**
It’s fast-paced but with the support of Len, you will complete your own project to make a small set of steps.
* Work from selected pine and measure, mark and cut pieces.
* Choose and make joints, assemble and secure with adhesive or screws.
* Sand and smooth to a stage where your project is ready for staining or waxing and taken home with pride.
All personal protection, the use of tools and basic materials are included.
**This course is suitable for beginners**

**Predictable Systems in an Unpredictable World (Behrad Babaee, Aerospike)**
Modern systems are challenged by volatility. Traffic patterns shift without warning, workloads evolve continuously, and failures are no longer exceptional events. In this environment, average performance is meaningless. What matters is whether systems behave predictably when conditions change.
This session explores how system design choices determine behavior under volatility. We will discuss why many modern architectures rely on fragile assumptions about steady-state workloads, cache locality, or predictable growth, and how those assumptions break down in real production environments. Through concrete examples and architectural discussion, we will examine what it means to design systems that remain predictable as load, access patterns, and scale evolve.
The goal is not to showcase tools or benchmarks, but to build a shared mental model for thinking about predictability as a first-class system property.
***Behrad Babaee*** *is a software engineer who leads Product Marketing at Aerospike, shaping positioning and go-to-market strategy for real-time data systems in the AI era.*
*He began his career building scalable, distributed applications for organisations including Barclays and Credit Suisse, before moving into architecture and field leadership roles at Aerospike and DataStax.*
*Today, he combines deep engineering expertise with strategic product leadership, focusing on how organisations design systems that remain predictable, resilient and performant under real-world volatility.*
**Observability with HAProxy: detecting what is not working and why (Baptiste Assmann, HAProxy Technologies)**
Is it the network, the app, or the database? In complex microservices environments, "mean time to innocence" is a critical metric for platform engineers. HAProxy sits at the convergence of these traffic flows, providing a unique vantage point to answer the ultimate observability question: "WTF is going on?".
We'll do a deep dive into the metrics that matter, so you can detect anomalies before users complain. You will learn:
* The difference between monitoring and observability in a reverse proxy context.
* How to access HAProxy’s detailed logs, stats, and stick-tables.
* How to analyze the "life of a request" using precise timers to pinpoint latency sources.
* How to use HAProxy’s observability features to fix real-world issues (demo)
* How HAProxy Fusion provides centralized observability and automation for enterprise deployments at scale.
***Baptiste Assmann*** *is Director of Product at HAProxy Technlogoes. He spent his carreer on networking and high performance architecture. Today, he plays a key role on HAProxy's ecosystem evolution: from bare metal to Kubernetes and from load balancing to advanced security at scale and always looking forward for what's next!*
**eBPF: Revolutionizing Cloud-Native Security (Alam Ahmed)**
eBPF: Revolutionizing Cloud-Native Security from the Kernel Up
Cloud-native architectures have fundamentally broken traditional security models. While 67% of organizations now delay deployments due to Kubernetes security concerns, conventional tools remain blind to the dynamic, ephemeral nature of containers—operating from the outside looking in, missing critical kernel-level threats until it's too late.
This session reveals how eBPF (extended Berkeley Packet Filter) is transforming cloud-native security by moving visibility and enforcement directly into the Linux kernel. Through real-world case studies from Meta, Google, and Cloudflare—where eBPF processes billions of packets per second and mitigates multi-terabit DDoS attacks—you'll discover how this technology delivers 10x performance improvements with <1% CPU overhead.
We'll explore the production-ready CNCF ecosystem (Falco, Tetragon, Cilium) and demonstrate practical security observability patterns: process execution monitoring, network correlation with Kubernetes context, file integrity tracking, and syscall anomaly detection. No kernel modules. No code changes. Complete visibility.
Whether you're battling container escapes, cryptojacking, or compliance gaps, this talk provides the architectural blueprint for security that matches the speed and scale of cloud-native—without sacrificing agility.
***Alam Ahmed*** *is a Junior Cloud & DevOps Engineer with NOC operations experience and a focus on cloud security. He has spoken at Elastic London and Yorkshire DevOps on Security as Code practices, contributes to open-source projects including Envoy AI Gateway, and is passionate about kernel-level observability and cloud-native defense.*

One-day workshop. 10am – 5pm.
Drawn to the look of fashionable roman blinds but not sure how to make them yourself? Then this one day workshop is for you.
From measuring the window to fixing it to the wall, experienced tutor, Ian McQueen will guide you through the tools and techniques for making bespoke and accurately fitting blinds for any room in your house.
During the day, you will master the art of producing a fabulous window treatment. You will make a sample blind using a 75cm x 1-metre drop piece of fabric. We keep our workshops very small for this discipline as you will need room to spread out when you are measuring and sewing so we aren’t able to make larger samples. You can take your professional handiwork home with pride.
You will learn what to buy when shopping for cords and rings and how to select a suitable fabric to bring perfection and privacy to your decor.
The Goodlife Centre has a varied selection of quality fabrics for you to use.

TRADITIONAL AND MODERN LAMPSHADE MAKING
**Bookable via our website ➡️** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/traditional-and-modern-lampshade-making-74/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/traditional-and-modern-lampshade-making-74/)
⋆⋆⋆
If you aspire to the luxury and elegance of lampshades that ooze class like a dowager, this is the workshop for you. Even if you have never stitched in your life, Ian McQueen’s relaxed and friendly style of tuition will have you wishing you had taken to the sewing needle years ago.
Ian is a City and Guilds trained craftsman who makes elegant traditionally built fine lampshades for interior designers and high-end shops. Some are sophisticated – lined with silk so light glows through, some are dramatic statements bejewelled with vintage adornments. All are hand stitched -not glued – so that they retain their shape and structure to give years of pleasure.
During a one-day workshop, you will select a wire frame and transform it into a bespoke home accessory for all to admire in your home. We use a 10-inch diameter Drum shade and a 12-inch diameter straight Empire frame.
You can select fabric from a few fabrics we have available but we recommend you bring along 1 metre of fabric to match your colour scheme. If you want to walk on the wild side, bring any fabric you want to give new life. Students have even transformed an old pair of jeans into a striking shade.
The process is fun but meticulous so there is sometimes only the time to complete the stitching on one lampshade in a day. This will depend on your speed. What you will take home is some of the historical skills used by milliners and upholders. (They were the stitchers who hung the tapestries on medieval walls.) As well as the know-how and route to suppliers you will learn how to make your own lampshades at home. The tutor can demonstrate how to make simple trims in the same fabric. No special machinery is required and only a little help from a simple sewing machine is available at the centre. It does not matter if you have never used a machine before.
Choices-
1. Make a firm drum lampshade. Using a supplied frame, you will learn how to stitch reinforced fabric onto a frame using a traditional stitch.
2. A pleated or unpleated lampshade. The lampshade fabric is stretched or folded directly onto a ‘Straight Empire’ frame. The lampshade can then be lined with a contrasting fabric.
The use of all tools and materials are included. We have additional assorted frames for sale, as well as a small range of vintage trimmings for you to make more lampshades at home.
Suitable for beginners. Enjoyable for all.

Crafting runes, from clay.
We will be doing homemade runes with clay. It can take a bit of processing. To let them dry and paint. But I hope every one enjoys them. ^^
## Rune Making Class
**Carve Meaning. Shape Intention. Create Something That Lasts.**
Runes are more than symbols. They are an ancient alphabet rooted in early Germanic and Norse traditions, historically used for writing, protection, divination, and marking objects with intention. Each rune carries layered meaning. Strength. Protection. Prosperity. Movement. Transformation.
In this Rune Making Class, you will create your own handcrafted rune set while learning what each symbol represents and how it has been used across history.
### What Runes Are Used For
Runes have traditionally been used for:
• Divination and guidance
• Protection markings on tools, weapons, and homes
• Meditation and self reflection
• Setting intention and personal focus
• Symbolic storytelling
Whether you approach them from a historical, spiritual, or symbolic perspective, runes are tools for reflection and intention.
***
## Who This Is For
This class is for:
• Fantasy and history enthusiasts
• Writers and world builders
• Spiritual practitioners
• Makers who enjoy hands on craft
• Anyone drawn to ancient symbolism
No prior experience is required.
***
Runes were once carved into clay, wood, bone, and stone to carry intention into the world. Now you will make your own with clay.
Seats are limited.
Reserve your place and create something timeless.
