AI in Production: Vectors in the Newsroom & Healthcare Challenges
AI in Production: Vectors in the Newsroom & Healthcare Challenges
GDG Cloud London is thrilled to be partnering with Skyscanner for a deep dive into the world of AI applications in Production. This meet-up is a unique opportunity to connect with fellow AI enthusiasts, industry practitioners, and researchers in a dynamic and interactive setting. We are going to have some pizza and networking at the end! Don't miss out, RSVP now!AGENDA 18:00 - Doors Open & Check-ins 18:30 - Welcome & Intro 18:40 - Ellen Muller - Vectors in the Newsroom: Building Smarter Image Search at the Guardian. When a photo editor searches our image management system for "protest" at 6pm on a deadline, they can't afford to get zero results because the images were captioned "demonstration." Traditional keyword search has no way to know those mean the same thing - and for an archive with inconsistent metadata, that gap matters. This talk is about how we added semantic search to the Grid (the Guardian's open source image management system) using embeddings and vector similarity. We'll dig into how vector spaces let you encode meaning rather than just text, and the practical choices (and mistakes) involved in shipping this into a real production system. 19:15 - Bruno Ripa - Technical challenges of AI adoption in Healthcare Deploying AI in healthcare requires solving a shifting equation: balancing high-fidelity clinical utility against rigorous data sovereignty mandates and punishing infrastructure costs. This talk breaks down how our company navigates this fluid landscape daily. We will cover where we use AI in our stack, how localised data compliance continuously reshapes our engineering choices, and the concrete technical hurdles we encounter along the way. Rather than showcasing a finalised architecture, we will focus on the ongoing design decisions and trade-offs required to keep our product secure, reliable, and compliant, all while aggressively optimising compute and operational costsโ€”proving that surviving the mutating challenges of healthcare AI is a continuous process of lean execution. 20:00 - Pizza & Networking Agenda --- Speakers Bruno Ripa - Dyad (Senior AI Engineer) Ellen Muller - The Guardian (Software Engineer) Hosted By Amanda Cavallaro, GDG Organizer I'm an Aikidoka, Developer Advocate, Software Developer, Google Developers Expert, Linkedin Learning Author and a Full Stack Web Development Specialist. June Classic: No One Writes to the Colonel - Gabriel Garcia Marquez
New members are always welcome. :) **Description:** ***No One Writes to the Colonel*** (Spanish: *El coronel no tiene quien le escriba*) is a [novella](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novella "Novella") written by the [Colombian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colombia "Colombia") writer [Gabriel Garcรญa Mรกrquez](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabriel_Garc%C3%ADa_M%C3%A1rquez "Gabriel Garcรญa Mรกrquez"). It also gives its name to a short story collection. Garcรญa Mรกrquez considered it his best book, saying that he had to write *[One Hundred Years of Solitude](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Hundred_Years_of_Solitude "One Hundred Years of Solitude")* so that people would read *No One Writes to the Colonel*.
All Out of Bubblegum Film Club 143 / Speed Racer
All Out of Bubblegum Film Club 143 / Speed Racer
Speed Racer is a 2008 American sports action comedy film written and directed by the Wachowskis, based on the 1966 manga series by Tatsuo Yoshida. The film stars Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, Roger Allam, Benno Fรผrmann, Hiroyuki Sanada, Rain, and Richard Roundtree. The plot revolves around Speed Racer, an 18-year-old automobile racer who follows his apparently deceased brother's career, choosing to remain loyal to his family and their company, Racer Motors, which causes difficulties after he refuses a contract that E.P. Arnold Royalton, owner of Royalton Industries, offers him. The film received mixed reviews from critics and was a box office failure, grossing $94 million against a $120 million budget. In later years, the film would garner a strong cult following among filmmakers and audiences. It was nominated in three categories at the Teen Choice Awards. Please note we will not be showing the film at the meeting. Make sure you watch the film before you attend and then come and join in with the conversation. Itโ€™s just a discussion. Itโ€™s not a screening. We will be meeting in The Ludski Bar in the Rio Cinema. The Science of Can and Can't - Chapter 6, Week 2
This week we'll discuss the sixth chapter of [The Science of Can and Can't](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Science-Can-Cant-Physicists-Counterfactuals/dp/0241310946/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1YFBGHPLNB4NO&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.YoSj1NdZXBPKK81RKKOjBA.ga2ZS1YEzf0cR13hyK4BpEHaXtvmjSfEhGZemtNXrLU&dib_tag=se&keywords=the+science+of+can+and+can%27t&qid=1779107463&sprefix=the+science+of+can+and+can%27t%2Caps%2C136&sr=8-1), by Chiara Marletto, co-developer of Constructor Theory alongside David Deutsch. This is the second of two discussions on this chapter. A big theme of the book is counterfactuals - statements about what *could* happen, not just what *does* happen. Chiara argues that science has historically struggled to incorporate these rigorously, even though theyโ€™re central to explanations, computation, biology, knowledge, and agency. If this is your first time attending we meet in the cafe of the Barbican Cinema - look for people with copies of the book. Please read the chapter before attending.

Practical Philosophy Club Meetup - London ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง
Practical Philosophy Club Meetup - London ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง
**๐Ÿ›๏ธ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?** Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no โ€˜officialโ€™ philosophy knowledge required! ๐Ÿ˜Ž Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic. Please note that RSVP via the meetup app is mandatory, including for any people you bring along with you so we and the venue have headcount and know who is with us. The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community ๐Ÿ™Œ ๐Ÿ““ **HOW DOES IT WORK?** Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/B6fqS6HGujq8gb3a0kl5pS), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going. When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, itโ€™s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture. **General Meeting Agenda** Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline: * 14:00-14.15 - Arrive, take a seat so there is 4-7 ppl per table. Shuffle around if you want to sit at a different table to meet new faces, and do your table introductions. This is also when I check people in on the Meetup app. RSVP for you and any guests is mandatory. * 14:15-14:20 - Once everyone has been checked in on the Meetup app, I will give a short explainer on what PPC is about, read the guidelines, introduce topicโ€™s jump-off points. * 14:20-15:20 - Kick off with general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the โ€˜jump-offโ€™ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. Itโ€™s not obligatory to answer them. * 15:20-15:30 - We typically take a group photo. If you don't want to be in the group photo, there's no pressure, it's just a way to close out the meeting. We occasionally have an unofficial social so the different groups can mingle afterwards too, usually in the park with a board-game or we continue out discussions and hear what members on other tables discussed! **๐ŸงงPRICING?** Practical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend, and we operate on donations. If you'd like to donate to support our running costs, that helps keep our group self-sustaining. Donations are 100% voluntary, but your contribution is appreciated! QR codes to donate will be present. Teaโ€™s and coffees and are paid by the individual should they wish to have them. **๐Ÿ’› WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY** ๐Ÿ—ฃ โ€œI feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting whatโ€™s right and wrongโ€ - Ekam ๐Ÿ—ฃ โ€œI got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.โ€ - Daniel **๐Ÿค“ FAQ** * What will we talk about? What's the topic? The topic for the week is shared every week in the Whatsapp group before the session. We try to add the topic to the comment section on this event page as well but if you donโ€™t see it, the topic and the jump-off points will be in our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/B6fqS6HGujq8gb3a0kl5pS). * Do I need to study or read anything to attend? No preparation is necessary. This isnโ€™t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what YOU think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and weโ€™ll discuss it, but it's not required. * Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on? The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school. * Is it mostly men that attend? Surprisingly, no! Although philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we donโ€™t meet in any dark rooms. * Can I come alone? Of course you can, we encourage it :) * Can I be late? Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation. * Where do you meet? The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/B6fqS6HGujq8gb3a0kl5pS) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/practical-philosophy-locations/). ๐Ÿค**POLICY** To respect our members privacy, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Contacting or texting other participants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in removal from the group. Practical Philosophy reserves the right to enforce this policy at its discretion to maintain a safe and respectful environment. **PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY - Making Philosophy Available To All.** โœจ Practical Philosophy hosts weekly, in-person meetups in 25+ countries, including Canada, Spain, Japan, Mexico and many more! ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ \*\*\* Join our [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/B6fqS6HGujq8gb3a0kl5pS) ๐Ÿ‘ˆ Follow us on [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/practicalphilosophyclub/?hl=en) ๐Ÿ‘ˆ Our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club) ๐Ÿ‘ˆ

Let's Discuss... Do we need privacy?
Let's Discuss... Do we need privacy?
When people know they are being watched, by governments, corporations, or even those closest to them, something shifts. They begin to self-censor, to soften their opinions, to avoid behaviors that might invite judgment. Gradually, the performance becomes the person. What starts as caution hardens into habit, and habit reshapes identity. Without privacy, people are not acting from genuine values or beliefs. They are playing to an audience they can never fully see. A society built on constant surveillance may appear orderly on the surface, but beneath that order lies something quieter and more corrosive: anxiety, conformity, and the slow erosion of the self. When we lose the ability to exist unobserved, we lose something essential about what it means to be free. Is privacy a right, or is it a luxury? Can you freely think if you know someone is watching? Would you trade your privacy for safety? Stop Guessing: How to Measure and Improve LLM Outputs
Stop Guessing: How to Measure and Improve LLM Outputs
Most people use LLMs by feel: ask a question, read the answer, decide whether it โ€œseems good,โ€ and move on. That works for casual use. It does not work when you are building software, automating workflows, writing important documents, or relying on AI for anything that needs to be repeatable. In this talk, weโ€™ll look at how to improve and evaluate the inputs and outputs of LLMs using practical measurement techniques. Weโ€™ll cover how prompt changes affect results, how to compare outputs, how to build simple evaluation sets, and how math-based methods like similarity scoring can help you move beyond guesswork. This will be beginner-friendly, so even if you don't know anything about AI, you should get something out of it. However, this will be a little more technical than our intro talks. You do not need to be an AI researcher, but programmers and technically curious attendees will get a lot out of it. Weโ€™ll cover: * Why โ€œit looks goodโ€ is not enough * How to improve prompts by changing the input, context, and constraints * How to compare LLM outputs more systematically * Basic evaluation techniques for accuracy, consistency, and usefulness * How embeddings, cosine similarity, and scoring can help evaluate results * Where automated evaluation works โ€” and where humans still need to stay in the loop By the end, youโ€™ll have a practical mental model for treating LLMs less like magic and more like systems you can test, measure, and improve. LOGISTICS AND PARKING: The talk starts at 7:00 PM. The first half hour is reserved for everyone to get set up and mingle. Free pizza and drinks! The cheapest parking option is to find street parking, which will only cost you a few bucks. Otherwise, park in the nearby veteran's museum lot for $8. It's highly recommended you avoid the nearby $15 garage parking.
