Do You Really Know What an API Is?
[French version below]
APIs are everywhere โ weather apps, mobile apps, online payments, dashboards โ but do you really know what an API is and how it works?
In this PyLadies Brussels workshop, we'll take a step back and focus on understanding APIs from first principles.
**We'll explore:**
* What an API actually is (beyond the buzzword)
* How different applications communicate with each other
* What CRUD means in practice
* How the same API can be used from Python, the browser, and JavaScript
Using simple examples (no heavy setup, no complex frameworks), we'll look at a small Python API, explore real online APIs directly in the browser, and see how JavaScript interacts with them. The goal is not to build a "perfect" API, but to build a clear mental model of how APIs work and why they exist.
**What you'll need:**
* Basic Python knowledge
* Laptop with Python installed (a few laptops will be available if needed)
* Curiosity about how things work
Beginner-friendly, concept-focused, and open to anyone curious about APIs ๐
\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-
**On va explorer :**
* Des bases en Python
* Un ordinateur portable avec Python installรฉ (quelques ordinateurs seront disponibles si besoin)
* De la curiositรฉ
Accessible aux dรฉbutantยทeยทs, axรฉ sur les concepts, et ouvert ร toute personne curieuse de comprendre les APIs ๐

๐ก **Schedule:**
* **6:00 pm:** **Welcome with food & drinks**
Doors open, grab a drink and a bite as we get started!
* **7:00 pm - 7:40 pm:** **From data to demand: Developing your own forecasting models & Custom AI Agents with Databricks**
Turning client data into reliable demand forecasts is one thing, operationalizing it safely at scale is the real challenge.
This meetup talk shows how we use Databricks as the backbone for demand forecasting, from data preparation to production-grade delivery. MLFlow sits at the core: tracking experiments, comparing runs, and registering the best model for controlled promotion and rollout. Weโll demonstrate how the model is embedded in Databricks data pipelines so forecasts are produced automatically and consistently for downstream use. Forecasts naturally trigger follow-up questions, so weโll also introduce our own secure agent that answers client questions grounded in their own data. Youโll see how agent-level security and access controls keep every response scoped, compliant, and auditable, without slowing teams down.
*By [Bram Verbeke](https://www.linkedin.com/in/bram-verbeke/), Analytics Consultant @ Plainsight*
* **7:50 pm - 8:30 pm: Engineering the Future: Next-Generation Pipelines with Databricks Lakeflow**
Databricks Lakeflow is a powerful set of tools for running data engineering workflows on Databricks. It allows data practitioners to build end-to-end, production-ready data pipelines. Yet, having the right tools is only half the job; knowing how to use them effectively is just as important. During this session, weโll dive into the most important components of the Lakeflow toolkit: Lakeflow Connect for seamless data ingestion, Lakeflow Declarative Pipelines for building robust batch and streaming pipelines, and Lakeflow Jobs for headache-free workload automation.
Attendees will gain practical insights into building production-ready data pipelines. Focusing on proven data engineering best practices, weโll also look ahead to the future of Databricks Lakeflow and how it can help democratize data across teams

End the night with casual drinks and great conversations!

NEW TIME-- 6 PM!! Deep Conversation-- Question Chosen in Session
Welcome to our weekly event in the upstairs room of The Sister Cafรฉ, rue Chair et Pain 3, one block from the Grand Place. Please get there early enough to order your drink at the bar first. Thank you!
After introductions we will collect questions from the group participants, choose one by voting then discuss it for an hour. Then most of us stay for drinks and bizarre conversations.
Past questions have been wide and not confined to academic philosophy:
What is a genuine friend?
Is social media turning us into emotional zombies?
Do we lose some of the experience of things by defining them?
Are we driven by sex?
Is loneliness a personal failure?
Is morality relative?
**Crucially, be kind and respectful and generous** in your disagreements; remember how much you personally enjoy someone else proving you wrong before celebrating your cutting counterexamples.
Roleplaying Session (1 of 2): The Orchard of Glass Wolves
**Read this carefully before signing up!**
[Dungeon World](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeon_World) is a narrative high fantasy roleplaying game, built on the [Powered by the Apocalypse](https://www.forbes.com/sites/robwieland/2020/12/29/a-beginners-guide-to-powered-by-the-apocalypse-games/) framework. It was first published in 2011 and has since become one of the most popular tabletop RPGs in the world.
Two years ago, the original creators of Dungeon World commissioned a new design team to develop **Dungeon World 2**, bringing the game up-to-date and taking into account 15 years of evolution, creativity and play in the PbtA community since the early days of the game. This new ruleset is not yet ready for public testing, but a series of closed alphas took place in 2025.
On 2 February 2026, a 'final alpha' ruleset was distributed to a small community for a round of playtesting during the spring. This game is part of that playtesting round.
**About this game**
Using the final alpha ruleset, we will design a set of characters and then jump into a short adventure entitled The Orchard of Glass Wolves.
You don't have to know anything about Dungeon World or have any specific roleplaying experience to join the game. The ruleset is designed to be beginner-friendly.
Also, it's worth saying that I (as GM) have been working with Dungeon World for many years, but the new alpha ruleset contains a lot of new stuff for me too, so we will be discovering it together!
The outcome of our game, and our feedback on the experimental ruleset, will be shared directly with the designers.
**This adventure will take *two evenings* to complete. If you want to take part, you need to be available on *both* the following dates:**
* **Sunday 15 February, 19:00 at Outpost Brussels**
* **Tuesday 17 February, 19:00 at Outpost Brussels** [(sign up)](https://www.meetup.com/boardgamemonkeys/events/313187962/)
**Please do not sign up for just one session. You must sign up for both -- or neither!**
If you do sign up, please do so in a spirit of experimentation, patience and good humour, and let's see where the game takes us...

* What you can help others with
Round 2:

"The Python library `dlt` provides a powerful [REST API toolkit](https://dlthub.com/docs/dlt-ecosystem/verified-sources/rest_api/basic) to ingest data. Combined with our [LLM scaffolds](https://dlthub.com/workspace) and [MCP server](https://dlthub.com/docs/hub/features/mcp-server), you can build a custom connector for any of the 8k+ available sources in 10 minutes by following this guide. Building with LLMs is an iterative process. We will follow this general workflow and give practical tips for each step."

Intro to Shaders in Unity
This meetup is a beginner-friendly, hands-on workshop focused on building shaders in Unity using Shader Graph. Instead of slides or theory-heavy lectures, we'll build real shaders together step-by-step.
The format is structured but interactive. You'll watch a quick demo, then build each shader yourself with guidance. By the end, you'll have created multiple shaders you can immediately use in your own projectsโand understand how to make more.
**What to Expect:**
* Build 4โ5 complete shaders from scratch
* Color tints, snow accumulation, scrolling water, dissolve effects, and more
* No prior shader experience required
* Checkpoint files provided if you fall behind
* Resources for continued learning
All experience levels are welcome. Whether you've never opened Shader Graph or just want to fill gaps in your knowledge, this is a supportive space to learn by doing.
**Food and drinks provided. Join us to learn, build, and level up your shader skills.**
