Bigger, Better, Bolder Miss Bachata & Miss Salsa
**Welcome to Miss Bachata & Miss Salsa!**
As the winter season wraps our city in its gentle sparkle, our community shines even brighter. This time of year reminds us how meaningful it feels to step into a space filled with warmth, laughter, music, and friendly facesâexactly the kind of energy we create together every Monday. While the world outside cools down, our dance floor becomes a cozy haven of joy, connection, and beautifully shared moments. Every Monday feels like a touch of winter magic⊠only with a whole lot more rhythm.
My objective has always been to create a different kind of social gatheringâone that is open, non-judgmental, non-salacious, and safe. A place where you can meet people just like you, where socializing and dancing come together to help build community and tear down the walls that separate us. Here, we make new friends, feel a sense of belonging, and enjoy the calmness that comes from knowing we are in a safe and welcoming space.
Many times, I have been asked, âWhy host an event on Monday night?â Many people escape on the weekend and dread Mondays when they return to work. I believe that if you dance and socialize on a Monday, you infuse your week with joy and positive energy, giving your life balance and helping you face your challenges with enthusiasm and confidence.
Weâre also thrilled to announce that our trial of advanced Bachata lessons, which began last September, has been a resounding success! Building on this momentum, weâre excited to offer an enhanced schedule for 2025. Our dance evenings will now feature three hours of classes: one hour of beginner to intermediate Bachata, one hour of advanced Bachata, and one hour of beginner to intermediate Salsa. As always, the entrance fee remains $15 for a night of 2 lessons and social dancing. For those interested in the advanced Bachata lessons, there will be an additional $5 fee.
Hereâs our updated schedule:
**Miss Bachata â Main Ballroom**
âïž 7:00 pm â 8:00 pm: Beginner to Intermediate Bachata Lesson (No partner required)
âïž 8:00 pm â 12:00 am: Social Dancing
**Miss Salsa â Round Room**
âïž 7:00 pm â 8:00 pm: Advanced Bachata Lesson (+$5) NEW
âïž 8:00 pm â 9:00 pm: Beginner to Intermediate Salsa Lesson
âïž 9:00 pm â 12:00 am: Social Dancing
**Additional Details:**
âïž Free Parking
âïž Full Bar (Free Water, Beer: $5.75)
Over the past decade, organizing Latin dancing events in Mississauga has been a labor of love. Our mission has always been to foster a sense of community, proving that the connections we share are far stronger than the differences that divide us.
Loneliness is a growing concern, with over half of U.S. adults and many Canadians experiencing its effects. The COVID-19 pandemic has only heightened this issue. Harvard University's long-term study on happiness, which began in 1938, highlights the detrimental impact of loneliness on health. People with strong social connections experience slower mental and physical decline and greater overall happiness compared to those who are isolated.
Here are some key findings from the study:
⢠Close ties help delay mental and physical decline more than money, fame, social class, IQ, or genetics.
⢠Relationship satisfaction is a better predictor of aging well than cholesterol levels in middle age.
⢠A strong sense of community improves memory function.
⢠Loneliness can be as harmful to health as smoking or alcoholism.
Thereâs hope! Strengthening our relationships and supporting community initiatives can build healthier, happier lives. Miss Bachata & Miss Salsa provides a wonderful opportunity to make new friends, expand your social circle, and enjoy a safe, welcoming, authentic environment. Bring your open heart and a smile, and weâll take care of the rest.
**Cheers to building an authentic, joyful, and connected community!**

Frantz Fanon, Race, and Social Pathology
In a moment in which anti-migrant rhetoric, ethnonationalism, and authoritarian populisms are on the rise, it becomes increasingly important that political theorists do more than offer a moral indictment of racism and xenophobia. In this talk, I contend that Frantz Fanonâs sociogenic approach to the critique of âraceâ and racialization makes a valuable contribution, even in postcolonial conjunctures that have moved beyond colonialismâs crude Manichean binaries. I read Fanon as a diagnostician of the social pathologies produced by colonialism and white supremacy, showing how he worked from the colonized subjectâs experiences of inferiorization and the colonizerâs experiences of racial superiority and *self-mystification* to advance a negative critique of racial hierarchies.

Assistant Professor in Political Theory
Department of Political Science and International Studies
University of Birmingham
**About the Speaker:**
My research sits at the intersection of antiracist political theory and Critical Theory, including that of the German Frankfurt School, French poststructuralism, and the British Birmingham School of Cultural Studies. I am currently working on a book project focused on Frantz Fanon's sociogenic method of antiracist critique. Drawing in part on my doctoral thesis, I argue that the failure to theorize 'race' has substantial consequences for continental political theory including but not limited to understanding the reproduction of racial injustice. I have also written on the politics of voice and visibility in the U.S. and Northern Ireland. More broadly, I am interested in feminist thought, social epistemology, and continental philosophies of self and Other.

This is a talk with audience Q&A presented by the University of Toronto's Centre for Ethics that is free to attend and open to the public. The talk will also be streamed online with live chat here [to be posted].
About the Centre for Ethics (http://ethics.utoronto.ca):
The Centre for Ethics is an interdisciplinary centre aimed at advancing research and teaching in the field of ethics, broadly defined. The Centre seeks to bring together the theoretical and practical knowledge of diverse scholars, students, public servants and social leaders in order to increase understanding of the ethical dimensions of individual, social, and political life.
In pursuit of its interdisciplinary mission, the Centre fosters lines of inquiry such as (1) foundations of ethics, which encompasses the history of ethics and core concepts in the philosophical study of ethics; (2) ethics in action, which relates theory to practice in key domains of social life, including bioethics, business ethics, and ethics in the public sphere; and (3) ethics in translation, which draws upon the rich multiculturalism of the City of Toronto and addresses the ethics of multicultural societies, ethical discourse across religious and cultural boundaries, and the ethics of international society.
The Ethics of A.I. Lab at the Centre For Ethics recently appeared on a list of 10 organizations leading the way in ethical A.I.: https://ocean.sagepub.com/blog/10-organizations-leading-the-way-in-ethical-ai
