Hands-on Lab: Getting started with OpenTelemetry
**BRING YOUR COMPUTERS TO THIS EVENT! And check out the prerequisites below.**
Join us for the first hands-on lab session, snacks, and discussion! This time around instead of talks we are going to run a free hands-on lab on how to get started with OpenTelemetry.
We'll teach you how to run your own local observability stack and how to capture telemetry from the host all the way to the application layer.
**Repository**
https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation
**Prerequisites**
* Git
* Docker and Docker Compose — or Podman with the `docker compose` CLI, see [PODMAN.md](https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation/blob/main/PODMAN.md) for setup
Pull all Docker images at home before the session to avoid slow WiFi at the event:
git clone https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation
cd grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation
docker compose pull
docker compose up --build
The first build downloads images and compiles both services — it can take several minutes. Once images are cached, rebuilds are fast. See [TROUBLESHOOTING.md](https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation/blob/main/TROUBLESHOOTING.md) in the repository if you hit issues.
**Again special thanks to Nokia and Mark Prosser for hosting us at their downtown office.**
**Agenda:**
6:00-6:15 PM: Arrivals and introductions
6:15-7:40 PM: Hands-On Lab
7:40-8:00 PM: Q&A, networking and wrap up
**Facilitators:** Nikola Grcevski and Marylia Gutierrez
CENTRAL MISSISSAUGA 🇨🇦 - Practical Philosophy Meetup
**🏛️ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required! 😎
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community 🙌
**📓 HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://tally.so/r/81LP4A), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 19:00-19:15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the official start.
* 19:15-19:25 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 19:25-20:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them.
* 20:45-21:00 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.
* 21:00 - The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other.
**🧧PRICING?**
Practical Philosophy is operated entirely on voluntary donations! If we are meeting in a café, buy a beverage! Donations are 100% voluntary, but they help us to bring the gift of deep conversation to people around the world. If you'd like to support, you can [donate here](https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/donation-form/donate-to-practical-philosophy)!

**💛 WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
**🗣** “I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” - Ekam
🗣 “I got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” - Daniel
**🤓 FAQ**
* **Do I need to study or read anything to attend?**
No preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what you think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it.
* **Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?**
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* **Is it mostly men that attend?**
Surprisingly, no! Although often, philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms.
* **Can I come alone?**
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* **Can I be late?**
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* **Where do you meet?**
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://tally.so/r/81LP4A) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/).
🤝**POLICY**
To respect our members privacy, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Contacting or texting other participants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in removal from the group. Practical Philosophy reserves the right to enforce this policy at its discretion to maintain a safe and respectful environment.

Short Reads Social: "Are Third Spaces Dead?" (June 30th)
**Are third spaces dead....(like this book club was for the last year)?**
Short-Read Socials are back! Come meet with like-minded and unlikeminded people to talk about the topic of the month. This time, we're thinking about **third spaces, socialization, and community-building.** *How has socialization changed with modern urban living and the rise of social media? Have commercialization and high cost of living killed third spaces? How do (or should) we actually build communities now?*
\-\-\-
**How does it work?**
* The event is casual. You can talk to anyone there with or without our prompt sheets, either about the month's topic or about whatever you want.
* Open philosophical discussion, including for controversial topics, is welcome but be respectful :)
* If you've read/watched/heard anything related to the topic of the month, feel free to bring it in! Not necessarily physically, but you can if you want...
* If not, here are some thought-provoking reads to start you off (read as many or as few as you want):
* On third spaces:

Cannabis & Yoga - High in High Park
Join me for an afternoon of movement, breath, nature, community, and **cannabis.**
No experience with yoga or cannabis is needed. This class is beginner-friendly, non-competitive, and open to all bodies and experience levels. You’re invited to move in whatever way feels good for you, flowing through every pose or simply resting on your mat and soaking it all in.
Cannabis can support relaxation, creativity, embodiment, presence, and connection. Everyone’s experience is different, and part of the practice is getting curious about what unfolds for you.
We’ll begin by gathering, smoking or vaping (optional), and settling into the space before moving into our practice under the trees. If you prefer edibles, please take them about an hour before class so they have time to kick in.
This class is by donation. Most people contribute between $5–35. Cash or e-transfer accepted.
### Please bring:
* Your cannabis
* Yoga mat (optional, the grass is lovely)
* Water
* Warm/weather-appropriate layers
* Optional snack to share afterward
We practice rain or shine.
Hi, I’m Nici from [Breathing in Nature](https://www.breathinginnature.com?utm_source=chatgpt.com). I’ve been teaching cannabis-enhanced yoga for over a decade and love creating welcoming spaces where people can slow down, connect, and explore movement and medicines in a different way.
Figure painting
Join our weekly figure drawing sessions where you will become familiar with human body anatomy, learn how to draw figures, and improve your sketching skills.
In a warm and friendly atmosphere, we gather to practice figure drawing, develop artistic techniques, and connect with new friends who share a passion for art.
Perfect for beginners and experienced artists alike.
🍂 Fall Walk: Rouge National Urban Park and Picnic🌳
🍂 **Fall Walk: Rouge National Urban Park** 🌳
is Canada's only Urban Park and is one of our most popular hikes that we do as it's really the only hiking trail in Toronto that you can get to by TTC. Once you are on the trail you will not believe that you are still in the City. Not only will we be walking up and hills but I will take you to one of the best lookout points in the Valley. You don't want to miss an afternoon of hiking.
This trail can be a bit challenging (with some ups and downs), so it may not be the best choice for beginners. But if you’re up for it, you’ll feel proud of yourself at the end — and you’ll have shared the experience with a great group of people.
After the hike, we’ll enjoy a **group picnic** (30–40 mins). Please bring something small to share — nothing too big so it’s easy to carry! 🥪🍎

Monthly Meeting (TBD)
TOPIC (TBD):
Meeting Schedule:
1. 6:00 - Introduction, Meet New Members
2. 6:10 - Old Business
3. 6:20 - New Business
4. 6:30 - Pre-Shoot Briefing/Education
5. 7:15 - Break
6. 7:30 - Image Critique
7. 8:00 - Adjourn
Pre-Shoot Brief/Education:
NIK Collection 8
Image Critique:
Previous Photoshoot Images (iPhone images and Christmas Cards). If anyone has images they would like critiqued, please provide them at the beginning of the meeting.
Providing Images for Critique:
For now, I will collect images at the beginning of the meeting on a USB memory stick. My computer has USB-C ports, so a USB-C memory stick or one with dual (USB-C / USB-A) ports will be needed.
Images should follow these format rules:
JPG - 80% quality or higher
132 dpi resolution
2048 pixels across the long edge
Embedded colorspace - sRGB
The Completely Series
These meetings will be a building block approach to learning photographic mastery over three disciplines:
Mechanical Mastery (MM) - 13 weeks of the series
Exposure Mastery (EM) - 26 weeks of the series
Composition Mastery (CM) - A 52 week series
All three series will run concurrently and will dovetail as follows:
Q3/26 - MM (Iter 1), EM (Iter 1, Pt 1), CM (Iter 1, Pt1)
Q4/26 - MM (Iter 2), EM (Iter 1, Pt 2), CM (Iter 1, Pt2)
Q1/27 - MM (Iter 3), EM (Iter 2, Pt 1), CM (Iter 1, Pt3)
Q2/27 - MM (Iter 4), EM (Iter 2, Pt 2), CM (Iter 1, Pt4)
That's likely confusing, but essentially, MM offered 4 times in that period, EM offered 2 times, and CM offered 1 time.
**TO BE CLEAR - THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR THESE CLASSES.**
This is an aggressive series, with presentations, homework, group shoots to be added in, likely at LEAST twice a month, image critiques, and an expectation that you are willing to put in the work to elevate your photography significantly. Open to all levels and all equipment levels. Don't let hesitation about your skillset and/or gear keep you from a one-time opportunity.
The group will meet every Monday, with periodic exceptions, and we will try to keep as close as possible to the original plan. Obviously, more data to come, and will be published as this is further developed, but now is the time to decide if you want to be a part of this.
Monthly General Meeting
This will be our regular monthly meeting, with a new topic picked each month. Topics to be determined and posted soon.
IxDA Chat n Pancakes
You can sleep in on the Sesquicentennial (observed), we’re shifting to the following Friday.
But join the local UX community for a chat and some biscuits to catch up. If you were in CA for Figma Config, tell us all the lines and you can tell me how I can animate an SVG without coding it by hand, and why I’d even want to.
Thanks to the team at Nationwide of supporting the group.
