Friday Walk
Friday Walk
Meet other Arlington remote workers for a walk around the block. Just a casual stroll through the neighborhood to get some steps in and have an in person convo.
Pimmit Run, Potomac Heritage, & Gulf Branch Trails (Rating: C)
Pimmit Run, Potomac Heritage, & Gulf Branch Trails (Rating: C)
You must read the following NVHC Sign-in Sheet Statement/Liability Disclaimer, [https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf](https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf) and then answer the question that you will see when you RSVP with "I accept" to be permitted on the hike. Tip o' the fedora to Willem Jansen for pioneering this route. This is a 7 mile lollipop hike with about 650' of elevation gain. Our route will take us through McLean and Arlington as we explore two tributary streams of the Potomac, and the remains of two Civil War era fortifications defending the Chain Bridge approach to Washington. From the Marie Butler Leven Preserve parking, we'll descend to Little Pimmit Run, merging into Pimmit Run. We'll take a short out-and-back side trail up to Fort Marcy before continuing on the Potomac Heritage trail to Chain Bridge. Upon reaching Gulf Branch, we'll follow that trail to the Gulf Branch Nature Center where we'll pause for a short snack break. We'll ascend to Glebe Road where we'll pass through the second Civil War fortification, Fort Ethan Allen, before returning to the Pimmit Run trail and back to the trailhead parking. Most of the hike is relatively flat, but includes a couple of short, steep, uphill sections. The natural surface portions of the route are narrow in spots and have many roots, and a few stream crossings. Poles may be useful. The parking lot at the starting point accommodates 12 cars. If it is full when you arrive, don’t park on Kirby Road, but in the Potomac Hills neighborhood, along Loch Raven Drive or Colleen Drive. No restrooms at the starting point; there is a porta potty at the rest stop. **Pace:** 2½ mph when moving. **Leader:** Steve Wiley, 571-345-6441 **Rating:** C **Dogs** are permitted on this hike in accordance with the NVHC Dog Policy. [https://tinyurl.com/nvhcdogpolicy](https://tinyurl.com/nvhcdogpolicy) Please contact me if you plan to bring your dog. **Trailhead:** See at the Marie Butler Leven Preserve, GPS coordinates **38.929789, -77.146651**. **Meet at 9:15**. We hike at 9:30. You may also find it in your navigator by inputting 1501 Kirby Road, McLean. **Map for hike:** downloadable AllTrails route [Leven Preserve - Fort Marcy - Gulf Branch](https://www.alltrails.com/explore/custom-routes/leven-preserve-fort-marcy-gulf-branch-b16524e?u=i&sh=pkltl9) and a [Printable pdf of route](https://geppetto-cdn.production.alltrails.com/pdf/v2/leven-preserve-fort-marcy-gulf-branch-b16524e-429884ce.pdf)

January Romance Book Discussion Club
January Romance Book Discussion Club
Please join us for our first Romance Book Discussion Club of 2026! Location is at my apartment in Dupont. Address and details will be provided to attendees closer to the meeting. Also, please update your RSVP by 6pm the day before, if you're unable to come. That will allow people on the waitlist to have enough time to consider coming, as well. Looking forward to discussing romance books with you all and excited to see what the New Year will bring for us all :) \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* This month the themes are: **Most Batshit/Unhinged Plot** and **Bodyguard trope**. As always, you do not need to read a book that falls into both categories, you're welcome to read whatever you like, but many members find it fun to explore and try new tropes and subgenres. For our "best of the best" the theme is **best redemption or grovel** of a character. So be thinking of a book you've read at any point that would fall into that category. A couple of suggestions to get people thinking: - *Aurora Rising* by Jessie Mihalik, sci-fi romance with a bodyguard trope. - *White Horse Black Nights* by Evie Marceau, fantasy romance with bodyguard/escort via horse through a dangerous forest. As for unhinged....that's about half the books I read, so that'd be a long list. "Unhinged" can be interpreted as campy, unrealistic/ridiculous, spicy, weird etc. However you interpret the prompt, feel free to include it! I also love a good bodyguard trope, but never read them enough, so I'd love to some recommendations myself! As always, please do sound off in the comments about suggestions for books or authors.
Social: Potluck and "Big Trip" Celebration
Social: Potluck and "Big Trip" Celebration
I'm excited to revive a DCUL tradition -- our annual potluck and "big trip" slideshow. You'll get to munch on tasty treats while seeing brief presentations from 2025 "big trips," including Tour du Mont Blanc, Nepal, the Wonderland Trail, and adventures in Colorado and Arizona. It's a great opportunity to socialize, meet other club members, and learn about trips that may be on your bucket list. And who knows--maybe a few plans for 2026 and 2027 trips, domestic or international, will take shape. This will be a potluck, so post what you're planning to bring in the comments. The building is easily accessible by metro—just two blocks from the Eisenhower metro or a short walk from the King Street metro. Limited street parking is available, but there are parking garages nearby.

"A Treachery of Swans" by A.B. Poranek
Can two girls—one enchanted, one the enchantress—save their kingdom and each other? Two hundred years ago, a slighted deity stole the magic from Auréal and vanished without a trace. But seventeen-year-old Odile has a plan. All her life, her father, a vengeful sorcerer, has raised her for one singular task: infiltrate the royal palace and steal the king’s crown, an artefact with enough power to restore magic. But to enter the palace, she must assume the identity of a noblewoman. She chooses Marie d’Odette: famed for her beauty, a rumored candidate for future queen…and Odile’s childhood-friend-turned-sworn-enemy. With her father’s help, Odile transforms Marie into a swan and takes her place at court. But when the king is brutally murdered and her own brother is accused, her plans are thrown into chaos. Desperate to free her brother, Odile is forced to team up with none other than elegant, infuriating Marie, the girl she has cursed…and the girl she can’t seem to stop thinking about despite her best efforts. To make matters worse, there are whispers that the king’s murder was not at the hands of man, but beast. Torn between loyalty to her father and her growing feelings for Marie, Odile becomes tangled in a web of treachery and deceit. To save her kingdom, she must find the true path to magic…and find the real killer before they—or it—strikes again.

WordPress Knoxville. Beyond the Prompt: Autonomous AI Agents in WordPress
Happy Holidays! The first Wednesday of January is 7th, and this is Orthodox Christmas. And i will be wishing everyone Merry Christmas in January, and i am sure many of you will be tired from all this socializing. That is why we are going to meet on February 4th. And we will continue discussing the Hot topic of our age an AI. We’ve spent the last few sessions learning how to *talk* to AI. We’ve mastered prompt engineering and "vibecoding" to build things faster. Now, it’s time for the next leap: **letting AI work for us while we sleep.** In this session, we are moving beyond simple chatbots to explore **Autonomous AI Agents.** Unlike standard tools that wait for you to type a command, Agents are designed to perceive a goal, plan a series of tasks, and execute them independently within your WordPress site. We will discuss **Generative vs. Agentic AI:** Understanding the shift from *"Write me a blog post"* to *"Monitor local Knoxville news and draft a weekly summary every Friday."* I am sure many of you have seen WordPress ads offering different Agentic tools like **Uncanny Automator**, **AI Engine**, or **n8n**. What do these tools do? How successful they are? And how implementable all these agents are for your current WordPress site? I will gather some info and make research. But please join us and bring your stories and experience on topic. See you!
