According to Slavic folklore, in the late spring the rusalki, an East Slavic version of mermaids, emerge from lakes and streams to water crops and to claim lives. They're mostly beautiful, with wild hair and blazing eyes, and they’re more than happy to drag smitten young men to watery graves. Join Philippa Rappoport, an expert on Slavic folklore and rituals, for a discussion of the water spirits of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia and the traditions centered around them. She'll describe how rusalki were both revered and feared by people who would sing songs in their honor while carrying protective charms. You'll learn how East Slavic mermaid lore permeated wedding rituals and parades, inspired the construction of effigies, and reflected beliefs about women that, throughout the world, have translated into a lot of concern over how women wear their hair and cover their heads. Philippa has wowed crowds with fascinating talks on East Slavic nature spirits and folktales related to the underworld and winter. Her accounts of mermaids promise to be equally entertaining. This is a peer support group for neurodivergent and neuro-affirming therapists and other healers in the mental health and somatic spaces. We'll meet the last Friday We'll have opportunities to socialize and grow our professional referral base in a fun, outdoor (and indoor when needed) environment. It's held on a goat farm in Silver Spring, MD so yes, you'll definitely get to be goofy around and with goats! Feel free to bring virtual and paper business cards and a snack to share if you choose to. There's a $35 fee per group which goes to cover the cost of nonalcoholic beverages and snacks. Feel free to bring a guest for free. I'll get us started with a brief ice-breaker activity or I might just pick a willing volunteer to help.

We can also chat about our 2 upcomming trips: 1. Bonaire (July 25 - Aug 1): The shore diving capital of the world. The group will do a mix of boat diving and shore diving. 2. Belize Aggressor III (Dec 05 - 12): This hasn't been posted yet, but it will shortly. If you missed our 2024 Belize Aggressor III trip, this is your time to make up for that. The diving here was better than anywhere else in the Caribbean. Come to chat about the details and secure your spot on the boat.
