Our inaugural event is here! It will be held in my apartment building, The Edmund, which is located directly above the Wegmans in Reston. Wegmans offers free parking, so park there and walk around the building to the lobby of the apartment complex, where I'll greet everyone and bring us all up to the fourth floor. (The elevator is access controlled, so we'll go up together.) Just bring a bottle of wine and however many cups you want to use to sample everyone else's wines. (There's a sink to wash out the cups.) Also, Meetup charges organizers (meaning me) $180 every six months, so please bring $1 to help defray this cost. [Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Can Artificial Intelligence ‘See’?”** A look at how humans and artificial intelligence systems interpret the visual world in fundamentally different ways, with Arryn Robbins, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Richmond and cognitive scientist who researches visual attention, perception, and category learning. You’ll learn how humans form flexible mental representations that allow us to recognize objects across changing environments and conditions, and why those representations continuously adapt as we interact with the world. Many AI systems, by contrast, learn visual categories through statistical patterns in data. They can produce impressive results, but sometimes they also produce strange and unexpected failures, and sometimes they classify images in ways that seem strange to us. We will meet inside Ben Gong’s, and afterwards, at 9 pm, we’ll decide on dinner at a nearby restaurant that is still open. Anyone is free to join us for dinner if they like.

Let's try something new for the wine loving bikers in our group. Biking is optional! For those that want to bike first, we will be posting as a separate meetup. We will meet down by the W&OD trail at 10:45, weather permitting. Then after an invigorating trail ride, we will meet our friends right up the road at the winery at 1:00. The Barns at Hamilton Station is on 11 beautiful acres with a restored 1910 wood bank barn transformed into the unique tasting room. Their wines are Bordeaux French style using carefully selected Virginia grapes. They will have live music starting at 2:00. We are hoping for good weather to sit outside at their picnic tables. Outside food is allowed outside only. If the weather is bad, we will move it inside and leave our food at home. Otherwise bring a picnic to share.
