Open weekly Maracatu percussion classes for all levels – beginners to advanced – Newbies very welcome! The classes are run by Sam Alexander, a professional musician, teacher, and artist. He leads the community group Baque de Axé in London, which plays traditional Maracatu Carnival percussion music from Recife in Pernambuco, Brazil. Classes run every Monday from 6:45pm to 9:15pm (Times include set up and pack away, drumming 7:00pm to 9:00pm) and are held in Maxilla Social Club, 2 Maxilla Walk, London, W10 6SW, underneath the Westway, 5 mins from Latimer Road Tube Station on the Hammersmith & City/Circle Lines. £15/session (payable on the evening via contactless reader (referred) or cash). UEL will be hosting a “Community Open Day” on Bank Holiday Monday, 25 May. As the resident Badminton Club, we have been allocated a 2-hour session from 2:00–4:00 pm, with 5 courts available. The aim is to invite existing members to come and play, as well as to welcome members of the public to try badminton. We will allocate 3 courts for games. The session fee is £8 per person. Payment must be made before the session starts. Bank transfer details will be shared by email once you RSVP. • There is a large car-park at UEL. • Nearest DLR stations are Gallions Reach and Cyprus, then a 5 minutes walk to UEL Sports Dock. • Session are more suited for Intermediate to Club standard players. Our Agbé beginners access 3 hour Sunday afternoon workshop covers the basic techniques and rhythms for Maracatu on the Agbé (Shekere). An Agbê is a large, dried gourd or calabash that has been cleaned, polished, and covered with a net of beads. It is played by shaking using both hands, and is accompanied by choreographed dance moves. No previous musical skills required. Instrument provided. Our community of percussionists (and dancers) is a friendly family of people from all over the world who have come together to meet new people and share a love for music, dance, and expression. Celebrating 40 years of Master of Puppets we will be hearing this album played in its entirety with the addition of classics from other Metallica records making up a 2 and a half hour show. Assault & Battery are described to be a local supergroup of members that also play in Slayer and Iron Maiden tribute bands indicating that we'll be witnessing some highly dedicated musicians bringing the records to life.
